RBC16 - Sleeveless

Grimjack - I was thinking along those lines, but when I saw that they didn't have any coal, I shelved that idea.

Who has it ? Anyone ?

preturn: so we decide to be peacelover? OK!

I buy coal from France by WM+10gpt+113g. Disband a reg warrior.

(1)1160AD: Not sure why Sadiz is building a temple..switch to Aqueduct.

(2)1170AD: IBT China starts ToE.

(3)1180AD: IBT Byz and Aztecs make peace.

(4)1190AD: I decide to lower lux to 0 and hire some scientists. We can raise sci to 60 and still making +12gpt.

(5)1200AD: Send a pike and MDI to oversea towns.

Korea chose to research Economics..

I renew spices for silks+8gpt with Byz. I can also renew with India but it has no gpt or gold so I hold to wait for better opportunities.

IBT China builds Universal Suffrage.

(6)1210AD: ZZZ

(7)1220AD: Raise sci to 70. Disband some more ancient units. Rush market in Coventry by 56g.

(8)1230AD: Korea gets Democracy. :lol: I guess we can consider switching to it?

IBT Byz completes ToE.

(9)1240AD: we are one turn to Medicine and Aztecs has gotten it.

(10)1250AD: Industrialization in 10 turns.

Since we seem to be determined to go peace route I suggest we get Domocracy from Korea and revolt into it. Faster worker and better income are never bad. We'll have cheaper unit support too (we are 26/52, exactly at the line, but I kept disbanding old units already).

I left a bit cash for you to rush things as needed. Newcastle can finish the aqueduct and pop a worker.

There is a boat with 2 pikes going for Saldae.

That goes to show. Sorry about doing steam before medicine. I thought it was the right choice, but I underestimated the AIs lust for bad governments.

Since we do not build wonders, I predict we will soon have fun with orange splotches all over our pristine white countryside.

Grimjack

Why orange splotches? Fishing villages
fish.gif
won't exceed size 12 and don't benefit from factories.

I played my turn. This was a "steady as she goes" butter-churning turn.

I was pleased to see fishing villages finally in good shape. :thanx: We're getting significant income from them now. :cooool:

* Rushed the temples at Oxford and the other one next to it.
* Produced half a dozen new workers.
* Railed production-oriented tiles mostly.
* Renewed our coal deal and other deals.
* Traded techs with Korea on three different occasions:
1) Physics, Metallury for Democracy. (Don't revolt! No need).
2) Magnetism for Economics, 3 gpt and change.
3) ToG and map for Military Tradition.

Korea pulled Medicine as free tech. If they research or obtain Sanitation, we might trade for that. Electricity and Sanitation are widely known. Aztecs are the only civ besides Korea who isn't 7+ techs in front of us.

Cities on Wealth are waiting for factory option. NO PREBUILDING. :nono: The courthouse under way is meant to be completed. It's almost done. Do not switch and use as a prebuild!

Building units to disband for shields? :eek:

::Looks at his arms, and upon finding no sleeves, wonders where this trick has been stashed::

That would be a no. :)

As for the university... that fishing village is currently on max food. It can return to 5spt (I think) when it tops out on happy and goes back to max shields.

Although, now that I think of it, I wonder if it would be better to swap to cathedral. Hmm. Depends on whether we ever buy dyes from Hannibal.

- Sirian

Got it.

Think we have a chance at ever catching up, or is it tanks asap ?

I do not think I can stomach artillery trenches for the foreseeable future, unless they patch in some way to bombard with entire stacks with one command.

Grimjack

RBC16 Sleeveless, 1300AD We work towards learning what the other nations already know. Our only asset is that we know how to use the other backwards civilizations, and that we wont be pouring money down the military drain. We will still need to have some sort of military, as we do not want the AIs to extort to much from us.

I have twenty more turns of coal, so no need to spread the workers out.

I do my outmost by placing citizens on water instead of forests, but I cannot lower the science slider, so I reset our citizens on the forest, so they make some more money at least. I gain six gold by working silks instead of sea. Not much to show for my efforts, and I am aware this will prevent me from building workers as it takes away the food.

IBT: India and Byzans sign MPP, Industrialization comes in, and I go for people with Sanitation. I have a hunch Aztecs and/or Korea are going the Nationalism tree. Then I could hopefully exchange Steam and Sanitation for Nationalism.

1305 Going off wealth makes me lose quite a lot of money. I will see if I can gain something in a turn or two, otherwise I will have to lower science.
Wanting Navigation, I ship Industries to the Aztecs for some spare change and Navigation. Not even close on Nationalism, and besides, I am not certain we want Nationalism yet.

I switch research to Corporation when I notice not all the forward powers know that tech. It is a long shot, but not impossible.

1310 Move workers

IBT: Korea and Aztecs sign peace

1315 I have no idea why the galley was travelling south to Saldea, but I leave it there for now. Anyone wants it somewhere else, move it.

IBT: India declare on the French. Cirta completes University, and starts a Market. Market is likely to pay for itself, and the other choice would be some sort of military, like a trebuchet.
Byzans joins what looks like a dog pile on the French.

1325 Nada

IBT: In order to supply our research, I get cash and silks when I renew the spices deal with Byzans.

1330 I notice size 8 is as far as a fishing village will go before it will need specialists. Warwick will go full production while it finish University and Cathedral.

1335 Up science and see if I can afford to get Corporation in three. France still lacks it, and I hope France is researching down Electronics way.
Mm London a bit for some more gold.

IBT: China joins the vultures, and wants a piece of France.

1340 Nasty swearwords erupt, as France gets Corporation. It was a long shot, and it is a required tech, so not much is lost though. I can only hope the next techs will net us a tradable tech.

IBT: France wants an MPP, and we thank her no. China seems to be turning orange. Corporation comes in, and I start refining. I will look what techs the AIs have before making the final decision though.
Byzans start Hoover 

1345 India and France both lack Refining and Steel. Steel is somewhat cheaper, but Refining reveals a resource. We are only one turn behind France, and they are at war, so whichever tech we chose will likely come to us faster than for France, and hopefully be enough to buy us Sanitation. I go for Refining, hoping we will have lots of oil to trade.
We cannot support a 70% science tax for more than a single turn, but I will do this before lowering to 60%.
I can get clads+4gpt+50 gold from Aztecs for Corporation. I will wait though. I think it is a bit cheap.

IBT: London completes its factory, and I start a worker. Do the worker before coal+money.
Carthage starts Hoovers. As do the Chinese.

1350 Look for a deal with Aztecs for Corporation. We can get full prize for Corporation, if we accept Ironclads as currency. ( They will throw in some 12 gpt.) We cannot get any good cash out of them, so we might just as well get this deal. I am afraid they will be stuck researching Fascism/Communism for quite a while.

We could possibly crank up research one more notch, but be very careful to have enough reserve so we do not incur a penalty by extortion of our last gold.

We have ten more turns of coal, make sure all tiles we want to be railed are started, and coal factories finished or started by then, and we may use our resources to trade for something other than coal.

Also, I forgot to irrigate our islands for feeding specialists. They are not very corrupt, so it may be better to finish building the islands first.

Grimjack

I have it. I'll try and get this turned around quickly.

Pre-flight – 1350 AD – Change one tile, the benefits of following Grimjack.

I execute the deal with Azteca, selling Corporation for Ironclads, 12gpt, 65G & WM. Upping science to the next level will be a -22gpt budget. I’ll wait a few turns before doing that.

Early: London: Worker=>Stock Ex.
Canterbury: Factory=>Stock Ex
Cadiz: temple=>library

Middle: Koreans and Byzantines sign an MA against France.
Korea picks up steam and sanitation. We trade Industrialization for Sanitation & WM. Hannibal has shaved his head and entered the modern era. Just when I was thinking we weren’t that far behind.
India & France agree to a peace
China owned a French city for about 10 seconds during an IBT.

Nottingham: factory=>stock ex
Newcastle: granary=>aqueduct
Oxford: market=>aqueduct
London: Stock Ex=>Hospital
Cirta: Market=>bank

Late: I move single workers to maximize our railroading potential.

We sell Ironclads to Korea for 9 gpt, 31g & WM That will finance an increase in science to get refining in 7 turns at -21 gpt.

France signs Carthage against Korea. We may have an opportunity here.
In a very odd occurrence, Theodora buys Carthage into her war against France. :crazyeye:

Coventry gets a tax lady for a while.

Canterbury: Stock Ex=>hospital
London: Hospital=>Galleon (You may want to change this one) MM for cash.
Rusaddir: duct=>library (MM for growth)
Sulcis: market=>duct

After Action Report – The coal deal with France expired last turn, however it is still active. You can renegotiate it and use the lux for a tech deal.

Save: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/RBC16_-_1400_AD.zip

Please do not forget the coal plants. We are extremely shield starved, and we will probably need to be able to churn out some sort of military to deal with starships while they are stuck on the ground.

Do consider switching the moneymakers to coal plants, and not renewing the coal deal. I suspect we have railed all we need to rail.

Grimjack

preturn: our people aren't exactly happy as Warwick is going to discoder next turn.

London is switched to coal plant in 6 turns. Hmm, it's working on forest while leaving two BG alone. Switch Nottingham and Canterbury to coal plants also. We'll have a lot of pollution.

Disband reg warrior.

I temporarily hire taxman in Warwick.

I rush library in Coventry by 144g. It'll bring 7gpt 17 turns more if we keep the science rate, so it's well worth it.

IBT France wants to renew coal/ivory deal. I get ivory+7gpt by spices+8g. No more coal for now, but at least we'll build those coal plants.

See Chartres is combarded by bombers, and some advanced AI boats. We catch Byz spy.

(1)1405AD: some MM to make coal plant one turn earlier in London. I decide to disband an archer.

(2)1410AD: not much. I decide to build a worker out of Coventry as it's starving.

IBT Refining -> Steel. Byz starts Manhattan Project.

(3)1415AD: Refining+WM+2gpt+97g give us Electricity from Aztecs. We do have oil beside Cita but not connected! Aztecs doesn't seem to have oil, so one more resource to sell.

India has some money now so I renew spices for wines+117g+WM.

Steel in 12 turns with -4gpt.

I decide to make Warwick high shield to get Cathedral in 25 turns but it will starve in 20 turns. A bit rushing is needed at the end.

IBT Canterbury coal plant -> hospital in 6 and grow in 6 too. We catch Byz spy again. :lol: China completes Hoover Dam.

(4)1420AD: Cadiz is going to riot too. I hire a taxman for now, and it's building library in 7 turns. I'll leave the decision to next player whether to switch to cathedral.

Electricity+Refinine gets us Nationalism+122g+11gpt+WM from Korea. Korea has Facism and Aztecs has Facism/Communism.

I have a question: the rule says "one tech per turn by trade", does it mean "one tech", or "one tech trade"? Can I get two techs in the same deal from AI?

We actually can steal a tech faster than self-research (we are making 381gpt) But I self research for now.

IBT Aztecs and China MA vs France. We got Pollution.

(5)1425AD: London is now 2-turn riflemen factory. It should keep building this to replace old units, which can be disbanded to speed up other builds.

Hasing is going to riot too so a taxman is hired.

(6)1430AD: Saldae hits culture 100 and expands, but it expands to 3 tiles on one side only. Is it true that culture expansion cannot cover ocean tiles? News to me.

Aztecs get Espionage.

Good news is that Aztecs/Korea/India have no oil, and no other AI seem to have extra.

By a closer look at the map:
* Carthage does have two sources, so it's selling to someone.
* China has one source in the far south island (it does have a harbor), ring 1 of a size-1 town, which we could actually get if we settle very aggressively and rush some culture.
* Byzantine has one source.
* France has one source.
* India/Aztecs/Korea has no local source.

So i don't understand why Carthage has only one source in diplo screen. Who is receiving it? I'm confused.

IBT Korea and France make peace. India and Byz MA against France. India and Carthage sign MPP. Nottingham builds Stock Exchange and starts hospital.

(7)1435AD: Oil is connected and is worth more than Espionage to India. Steel is in 6 turns, so I get Steel by oil+23gpt+189g. Start Combustion in 15 turns with +49gpt.

IBT Korea and France MA against Aztecs and China. This might be good news as Byzantine is rich (more than 10000g, and so Korea might have got some gold. Carthage and Korea make peace (gold transferred?) We catch Byzantine spy again. :lol:

(8)1440AD: Korea has no gold but got Espionage.

We can get Sci Meth from France by Steel+WM+7gpt+52g, or Replaceable Parts by Steel+WM+55gpt+47g. I thought for a while and decide not to sponsor its research, so Sci Meth it is.

France has no Atomic Theory, so I guess she is researching it.

Now Carthage shows one extra oil. Good that we made the deal with India last turn.

IBT Coventry worker->cathedral. Byz starts SETI.

(9)1445AD:

(10)1450AD:

Not sure what the workers should be doing, so I'm chopping forests.

Aztecs have 33gpt to spare. I suggest we sell Sci Meth for that, and also get Espionage from Korea.

Question: do we want to try steal? We may do so every 5-10 turns depending on immediate, careful or safe. It's faster than self-research (I'd like to take Atomic Theory that way). But it may disturb the AI war and make them sign peace, and rifles against tanks isn't that funny..

We do have oil beside Cita but not connected!

Cirta? That's the city the Carthaginians trekked far inland to found: iron and oil! I wonder if it has aluminum too?

I sure hope the AI in Civ4 doesn't take that shortcut. MAN, DOES THAT GET OLD. :gripe:

Got it.

- Sirian

PS: Just saw the rule question. Answer: One tech means one tech. One tech per turn.

I have probably made an oops on the rule Q. I padded my Navigation deal with some other tech that was annoying in the trade screens. ( Free Artistry probably. )

I am disappointed on the coal deals. I was sure coal is/was a 30 gpt resource during the rails/factory ages.

Seems like we are on track, and catching up with the warring people. Only Carthage and Byzantines to try and disrupt. Wonder how France fell so far behind them when France had such a large country ?? Paying out her nose for techs ??

Good going people.

Woops. I haven't played yet. Busy day. I will aim to play early tomorrow and see how things shake out.

- Sirian

Early: Running out of trading chances. I traded Steel to Aztecs for Espionage. No further trades possible, at that point. I started an irrigation campaign so our cities could max out. Carthage built Manhatten Project. :eek:

Middle: I bought gems from Aztecs and fired all non-police specialists. Had to start cleaning pollution, as well. I have one full cleaning stack of workers ready. Others are trickled around doing minor tasks.

Late: I moved rifles to our two islands, finished our fourth bank (we need one more to start Wall Street) and sped up research to complete Combusion (barely!) on my round.

We have two possibilities, as I see it. We've done enough of our own research for the moment, so let's open it back up to allowing tech trading, for the next bit of time.

1) Buy Atomic Theory at 288 gpt from China, then attempt to broker that for Flight and Rep Parts across several turns. Going to be now or never on this opportunity, I think.

2) Rush the last bank somewhere, start Wall Street, roll up 1000 cash, then continue to save cash and start conducting Espionage.

No tech trades have been made, and we JUST finished some research, so the options are wide open, and I have not committed us to either path. Passing the buck to the next man up. :lol:
