RBtS3 - The Uncultured One

by the way, any clue of a roster as I am back

Well as someone has declared on me the last two turns, I was wondering who it might be this time.

Genghis' face appears first IBT.

It appears he is without metal, I go care to negoatiate (was going to accept the deal but wanted to see if he had iron first) but he won't have it anymore  WTH?

He actually only has 2gpt to trade, I think there may be a bug here. I heard there was issues with resource trading with 3.13, is this it?

I don't want to punish him for Firaxis' dodgy programming and give it to him anyway.

Taj Mahal is available so might start it up in one of our two culture cities. We've moved the palace to Babylon, so Forbidden Palace will be in Ulundi, so Taj in Babylon. [Monty builds it a couple of turns later ]

There's a barb city not too far from the capital it might be worth acquiring.

Rifling comes in, Constitution for Jails seems good.

I make a trade to give Charlemange Education. We should look at giving him Liberalism and bribe him into Free Religion.

In any case I turn research to 0, to upgrade maces to rifles.

We pop a GS. We can build academy in Babylon or bulb 2/3rds Chemistry. He is hanging around.

I take Cherokee. On reflection should have razed and rebuilt 1 south but can use this as a fishing village w/ lighthouse.

Here's a bummer of a resolution. I'm forced to defy resolution.

We would have lost the vote too.

We pick up a 5:mad: penalty in 3 cities.

Brennus and Genghis have made peace. We need to cancel the copper deal when we can.

The peace deal ran out with Monty last turn. I have left the army unmoved if ThERat wants to start up a war immediately.

We've definately got the troops to wipe him this time. Then we need to move our attentions to Brennus.

I didn't give anyone Liberalism yet. Do we want to give it away and then try to bribe civs into Free Religion?

Wow losing some of our few tiles per city to AI culture really sucks. I think the best use for this GS is lightbulbing chemistry as the game is going to be decided in the cannon era - it is on the road to assembly line too.

got it...lightbulbing and attacking Monty

Maybe I played something wrong, but I lost us the game

Attacked Monty on th second turn, WW getting brutal, I used the whip liberally.

I got representation when we were 6 turns from it, via a trade with Charles (for liberalism). Once representation was in, jails were whipped all over the land. On turn 3 Genghis declared war on us as well.

Took 2 of Monty's cities including the Christian Holy city. Chemistry was about to come in (we also popped a GE which is on the way to the capital), when this happened.

Well, you can't defy that vote, can you? I also checked before whether Monty would become our vassal, but no such thing...

In fact that turn, 2 of our cities went into revolt...culture pressure becoming a real issue

The inevitable

I attached the autosave from the vote turn...1 turn from the loss

Sorry about this guys, I come back from holidays and this happens

Don't blame yourself ThErat, I think this was inevitable. I'm wondering if this works the same for AW games, it can be a game breaker

Come on guys, take a revanche, this one is fun to lurk!
(with hindsight of course i think it's better not to keep the apostolic palace but to raze it with so many enemies).

Wow, that sucks...all that pain for nothing. Nothing to be done about it ThERat. Truth be told if I had defied the first vote to make peace maybe we would have been able to vassalize Monty before this vote came up (or just took another couple of cities, he was barely past the threshold).

@angeleyes - I'm glad you enjoyed the lurk, but I kind of found this game unpleasant. If we could figure out a different way to avoid culture (is it possible to throw us into Theocacy in worldbuilder, even if we don't have Theology?) I might be game for it, but otherwise I'd probably join you on the sidelines ;).

Darrell

I agree with darrell...what I also don't really fancy is the fact that with every new patch, one is more or less forced to change strategy as the AI behaves very different from before. Might be nice to keep the game interesting longer though...

Yeah the variant creates interesting city placement decisions to be sure, but the late game was not very enjoyable. I'd like to try something else. Perhaps a succession game with FFH mod.

lurker's comment:
What is the FFH mod?

I think the no culture approach could work from an isolated start, but even then keen Free Religionists (Willem, Darius) might need to be added to the mix to counterbalance the player's locked religion.

I don't think I will sign up for this one. Not only do I not know the mod at all, I am also pretty burnt out on Civ4 at the moment.
