RBW1 - The True Isolationist

Played 8 turns to even things out. First, checked the tech situation. Things are not looking good my friends... not looking good. :crazyeye: Fortunately, we have double the land of any AI so catching up looks like it should be possible. In 1544, Hannibal's borders expand and splice our empire in half. :(

I check our great person situation. And was extremely surprised to see that its 1590 AD and we have only generated 2 great people? The new fish/corn city looks like a possible GP farm. We should build national epic somewhere soon as start pumping out some GP's.

Our army captured Aden in 1556, unfortunately a couple of extra losses due to a llost battle at 88%...

Capture Najran a turn later and pull off this deal with Saladin...

Im thinking that we can extort some 4-5 techs out of saladin that we are missing if he is our vassal, as well as some resources if he ever manages to get any again. After all, extorting doesnt count as trading eh? :goodjob: I go to him to extort optiks first, and this pops up...

WHAT? WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE ARE YOUR WORST ENEMY. SIGH! Wow... A vassal doesnt have to give in to your demands if he doesnt like you.. yeah.. I took his 800 gold instead  I also try to get Saladin to accept our isolationist ways..

But he refuses. He still does not understand the ways a real man should live... Anyways, in our peace treaty he gave us map of the other world, which is useful to see how to move along now. Everyone except Hannibal is pretty weak, so we can attempt a domination here by taking out Mao+Hatty or some other combo which doesnt include hannibal. Interesting thing though, look at Hannibals land... Pretty bad land for his strong empire:

Saladin comes to me on my last turn with this offer:

And I offer your puny little civilization this oppurtunity to get the crap out of my face :king: My plan to extort techs out of this bum doenst look like its going to work, but I guess that 1 happiness is worth it? Gotta get something good out of it..

Also, I have set washington and New York to build research since we have nothing else useful to build iin those cities. Next player should probably switch out of that to build grocers once guilds comes in.

Save:

I got it. I'll play tomorrow night. I take it we don't want to attack Hannibal? We could probably cottage spam our way to victory, but I also sense that domination would be faster?

I third that opinion. To me, warlords has a ton of nice additions but vasselhood just dropped the ball completely. Only use for it I see is tipping the scales on a diplo/domination win, otherwise the benefits are too scarce.

Cheers!

Washington - leave it on research, but jump research rate to 100% to get guilds next turn.

New York - change to max food and start harbor

Gustorvald - max food in this city is 30, so no need to build any health
buildings, leave it building research

York - is building a temple, I don't know why because size 10 seems to be its
max size.

Khursan - courthouse whipped.

Baghdad - we had an engineer specialist and the city wasn't growing, so I
moved citizens to max food.

Medina - is suffering horrible cultural pressure from Saladin's last city.

RBW1Medina.jpg

IBT - The barbs attack us and kill a pike.

T1 - I'm totally lost as far as what to do with our military units. If it were my game I'd smash Hannibal for his impudence. Ahh, I see he has rifles though. I change Gustorvald to Settler, together with the settler already started in Canterbury, perhaps we can flip Hannibal's cities by aggressive settling. I decrease sci. to 80% but we still get banking in 3 turns. I notice 2 Buddhist missionaries are trapped in East America, so I start a galley in New York, hoping it will be done before Hanny's cities expand. The best site for National Epic appears to be Basra, which is mostly grassland squares, however, cottages have been built on all of them, but have yet to be worked, so no loss there, if I build farms.

1577 - I revolt to Representation & Mercantilism, 3 turns of anarchy.

1580 - Hannibal builds Taj Mahal. He's already got nationalism.

1595 - A Buddhist missionary was just completed in Nottingham and I moved
him toward Mecca where we need to spread Buddhism so that getting the Grocer and Bank will be easier there. Optics completed on this turn, and I started Astronomy, but this can be changed by the next player.

Here is a screenshot of my proposed cities to surround Hannibal's cities. Any thoughts? Is this a reasonable idea or a pipe dream?

RBW1surroundhim.jpg

I'm also building a settler in Najran to grab a crab-copper site nearby. Better get it quick before Hannibal poaches it.

RBW1crabcopper.jpg

We could probably use a city here, too. Another poachable site.

A screenshot of the power graph.

RBW1Power1595.jpg

All in all, I'm not too happy with this set of turns because this is the part of the game where I play weakest. Too many cities to think about and planning for a war 50 turns in the future. BTW, I saw another Hannibal galleon lurking about near our shores, probably looking to poach another city site.

Edit: Adding a 2 more screenshots of Basra the first one is the way I left it in the save. The second is to show how quickly National Epic can be built here. There's lots of food (with farms) and some hammers to build the forge, market, grocer and other buildings. I think this city can be developed faster than any other.

RBW1Basrabefore.jpg

RBW1Basraafter.jpg

EDIT: misunderstood your meaning, sorry

Basra isn't high-food. It has many cottages built so should be a commerce city. A GP farm should have high food but not be able to do much else. This city is amazing, and to make it a GP farm would be a waste. It is a bit too late to get much out of the nat epic, but if we are going to build it I would prefer philadelphia.

Okay, okay.

T1- Saladin wants world map, I say no to him, cause I'm cool like that. I sent some units to take that little barb city, but Saladin beat me to it, razing the city! Habbinal places a city by the copper. Yes all that crap happened turn one...

T2- Hatty asks open borders, and I refuse, of course. I found Chicago near Thaene, aggressively towards hannibal.

T3-nada

T4- Great engineer in Medina... I think a long time about what to do with him, and eventually decide to settle him for the extra research/great people points, as it appears that we have no wonders coming up to use him for.

T5-nada

T6- Toku declares war on Hatty

T7-9-nada

T9- Both hatty and toku ask me for help in the war. I refuse them both. :)

T10- a fishing boat I built hooks up our whale resource. Astronomy comes in and a few banks are finished and a few started. We are at 40% research with a gain now. I also spotted in some unit cues, as warfare will definitely be necessary, we may as well start building units. I wish we had more units now while the whole other continent is at war already. By the way, there is a settler that could still settle aggresively near where new poached hannibal city is to the south. I just held the settler though. Whomever is next can settle him on turn 0 if they wish.

PT - I played 11 turns to even them out.

T1 - Seattle found to pressure Hannibals city

T2 - Machiavelli is a smart man:

se01.jpg

T4 - Building more infrastructure, mostly getting some banks up. Gold is slowly climbing.

T6 - Toku comes begging

se02.jpg

I think not

T7 - Printing Press in and I go for Gunpowder. At the same time a bank completes in York (Buddhist shrine) and I set the slider to 50% (+3). Also Hannibal declares war on Hatshepsut while Toku is still at war with her. AI dogpiling at its best.

T8 - I notice throughout my session that we're running engineers instead of our Ankgor Wat priests so I mm it.

T9 - Demand 300 gold from Saladin because we can.

T10 - Hannibal has more than twice our GNP and is the leader in power. But his golden age just ended so maybe he slows down now while we skyrocket.

T11 - Gunpowder in and I set research to Chemistry. Nothing invested so open for change.

Our research gets better but now our military is lacking. But we have by far the biggest land, production and population. Science running at 50% (+20ish).

I'd gather I'm up now... Just curious, when are we gonna roll over sally? Taking his town out would helps things out alot.

Cheers!

Hes our vassal now. I wonder who made that weedish move:mischief:

I thought that making him our vassal will allow us to extort his tech's, which would help more than that 1 city he has left, but I didnt know that vassals can block off giving techs if your thier worst enemy...

The only way to get rid of Saladin is to culturally take away 11 of his original 21 squares that he had when he became a vassal. We need to start cities at both blue dots, build theaters, run artist specialists in those 3 cities (Medina, too), and build cathedrals in all 3 cities. At that point, he can become "free" again, and we can pounce.

culturewar.jpg

preturn: ok well looks like we are about to flop over to next gen military units with chemistry on the way in 5 turns and we could stand to me making more cash. Since we have the both the bud hindu shrines it would be a good idea to spread the faith some since the south is hindu and the north bud.

Minor change was I added a budist monastary to Medina in the south in front of observatory. Doing this because time is short on being able to build them but also for the culture on sallys last town. Also cancel a treb build in arlen.

Notice half our workers are alseep and there's tons to be done... fix that.

[1]1673 AD
Washington builds a knight and I place it in research to cut a turn off chemistry.

[2]1676 AD
Spread Hinduism to Canterbury, setting Basra to kill off mother a bud and hindu monastary it's in a good place to start shooting out missonaries.

[4]1682 AD
Wow banks come online in a few places and we jump up to almost 50 gold a turn

[5]1685 AD
Chemistry comes in and we have....
rbw-1700beakers.jpg

I go with drama in 1 turn as we need theatres for the squeeze. Washingtons finishes It's gally and I place it near Chigago To ferry things around hannibals blockcade.

This settler has been parked for last 3 turns, looks like not even hanni is dumb enough to plunk a town down here. ERm hmm screenshot never took..... nm!

Have washington pop out a few workers in anticipation of lumber mills.

[6]1688 AD
Research comes up again and I go with replacable parts in 5 as we have enough forest around to make a differance.

Hatty takes a beating from both carthage and toku losing two towns and gets out of it all by becoming a vassel to hannibal.

[9]1679 AD
Chigago seems to have a buddist missionary there.... I send the gally to pick it up and run south to drop it off. Bump up Research to 60% at a mere -18 gold a turn... Our economy is making a swing upwards.

[10]1295 AD

What the heck, Medina revolted for sally as Yamama Pops borders... Ok well I run as many free troops as I can to medina all we need is 10 units and medina will never flip... I think I have enough heading there now.

Can use more garrison in the south as well considering seatle and Naj are 0% american.

A great engineer also popped from Medina I ran him over to safety in basra. Figure the SG and figure out what he can do. He points to Replacable parts due in 2 turns.

Quiet builder turns as we slowly digest Sally's lands. Having trouble applying culture in the correct places though especially south.

Best to make 10 or so junk garrison for the southern two towns to help them ward off revolts.

Cheers!
-Liq

There is no reason to rush a garrison to Medina, it won't flip back to Sally unless "city flip after capture" was checked as an option. However, periodic revolts will shut the city down. We need to build a theatre there and run 2 artist specialists, if we get a Great Artist then use it for a culture bomb in Medina.

Sorry for the delay guys, but its played now.

I decided to concentrate on getting our first signs of an army together as well as boost our research so we can get to cannons and infantry soon. Started off by microing some cities, mostly put alot of cities to concentrate on growth. I put like 5 specialists in nottingham since we are at the happiness limit in that city. Replaceable parts comes in first turn, I set research to rifling next. We should get some sort of army together incase the monstrosity known as hannibal decides to pick on us  Rifling comes in in 1724 AD.

Hannibal continued founding useless crapshoot cities on our island. His most recent one looks like this...

As you can see, after rifling I went after Education. We can use some universities in our high science cities, and Oxford eventually as well also. I also built some extra theatres to get us closer to globe theatre. Washington is producing military ATM, heres my thoughts...

I think domination is the easiest victory here, Space Race is too risky with the way Hannibal is teching atm. We will probably need to take all of Qin Shi's land and some Tokugawa cities as well. We are at 44.5% land area right now, which means around 18% more. It might also be possible to just take all of Qins land and then initiate a massive wave against hannibal's cities on our island, im not sure whether this will give us enough land though. We should clearly go after Qin first though.

We have an engineer idle in one of our cities, I think it might be worthwile to burn him on Globe theatre in this city:

Why ju ask? Well, primarily because we can use this city as a galleon pump(whip obviously) while london/mecca/washington pump our our army. We have no real good production coastal cities, so this IMO is best for galleon production. On the oither hand, we can hold on to the engineer for something like oxford in our best research city, but I think globe in philydelphia is better since we should attempt to win this soon.

Although I didnt mention it in the report, I did improve our research situation. We are up from 608 bpt with -11 gpt to 734 bpt with +45 gpt. :D
