Realism Invictus

Hi all,

Three huge world maps were added today.

Test A: some changes in Asia. Two barbarian cities removed, some barbarian cities less defended (Ba, Yi, Hui, Lac Viet, Pegu, Lahore). Europe: Illyria is weaker, de Gaulle as French leader.

Test B: Test A + Austronesia starts with a galley.

Test C: Test A + Java and Sumatra linked in a single island.

Revision: 4377.

It would be nice that players using the SVN version send feedbacks about the changes.
Is France able to survive ? Is Austronesia expanding ? Are one or both China expanding and creating a religion ? Is Korea still the first in Asia ?

Thanks,

Yann

While waiting for the version of RI to go live, I've been playing with the brilliant Crusades scenario.

Here's a perverse variant on that to share with you all.

This version posits an alternative history in which the Zealot revolt never happened - instead, Judea remained a loyal province of Rome an managed to preserve its identity and neutrality through the conversion of Constantine and the Great Schism with the Eastern Church.

The Diaspora - the result of trade and diplomacy rather than eviction - has helped ensure ties between the small kingdom and the heirs to the Roman Empire which had protected it. Thus it has flourished, enjoying the technological and social advancements found in the most advanced European states.

However, with the rise of militant Islam, Judea is approaching a crises and has sought the support of Western Christian kingdoms. They have provided a variety of military units to protect the Holy City of Jerusalem, but soon they will have enough to contend with themselves with threats from within and without Europe will see the rise of new Empires to rival the Glory of Rome.

In this save file, you are the tiny Kingdom of Judea (in place of the Kingdom of Jerusalem), surrounded by nations that hate you - not just the Arab states but many of the Eastern states as well.

How long can you maintain a Militant Jewish State, and can you unite the Diaspora into a great Empire before the Mongols arrive?

Difficulty level is only Monarch, so most of you should ace this unless you choose to use non-optimal Civics to stay within the intent of the scenario.

Advantages:
• Your 3 main starting cities have most of the buildings that 1000-year-old cities of the time should have, including Aqueducts, Theaters and Synagogues. Each also has at least one Great Historical Rabbi to pump up some resources.
• Solomon's Temple still stands (well, Herod's actually), and generates a substantial revenue from the Diaspora. You will soon be very rich.
• You have all the same Technologies that the Western states have, including Church Architecture, Guilds, Sanitation and Rudder.
• You have Open Borders with most Western Christian states and a good relationship with Rome.
• Most of the starting resources have been developed, but there's still lots to build so you'll need some Workers.
• You also start with a number of Rabbis, Jewish Inquisitors, Diaspora Merchants and Spies - use them wisely!

Disadvantages:
• Although you can build the Crusader-type castles, since Christianity is not your state religion, you can't build the special Crusader units (Hospitalers and Templars etc).
• You are surrounded by hostile enemies, and if you maintain a Militant religious stance, you may find your relations with other states declining (be careful how you use those Inquisitors!).
• Stopping the spread of the other Religions in your cities will be an uphill climb, especially as you expand.

Other changes:
• Constantinople starts with a better Castle.
• The land connection in Siberia was restored, so the Mongols will have the ability to invade in that direction, too (not sure if this is an Advantage or Disadvantage).

Have fun!

I'm using Test A, revision 4379. I actually wanted to play some Austronesian games, so I can't comment on that part. I was trying a few different research paths with them, and in both games the French civilization was destroyed early (most civilizations hadn't even discovered Iron Working).

To be perfectly frank, I don't think it is the French themselves that are the main problem. 9 out 10 games I have played, the Spanish have been the powerhouse by midgame (unless I actively did something about them). Even if France survives the early game, or they get crushed by the Romans/Germans instead of Spain, Spain just rolls out at some point and steamrolls Europe/the rest of the world.

I also rarely see the Portuguese survive long. I think Spain needs a surviving credible threat on their Western border so they can't just hit Europe with their entire army all the time.

Another player's POV:

1-I *think* the answer is supposed to be culture, but the *proper* places for England to put it's cities don't really allow for that. You'd have to have York move to places up AND have some Great Artists saved up to overload them. I can't say I've ever seen England actually conquer them. I know as Greece I took over around 4-5 of the neighboring tribes without attacking them, just overpowered them with sheer cultural strength, but Greece has that +25% culture and their cities' placements support the cultural overtaking.

2-I agree about Britain and Indonesia that the placements look tough. I'd honestly expect that there should be another city in between north and south England, yes it would have a lot of overlap, but until the later ages, there's usually not that much happiness to go around for the pops to start getting limited. And Indonesia's AI just needs to get slapped as there are plenty of places to plop down cities, and there's certainly room for a second one on the island with it. I mean, the Dravidians often take over the islands near Indonesia before the Indonesians finally manage to conquer Khmer.

1-yes i think it is not possible to culturally flip them

2-yes i think there should be a city in the middle of england but that city is going to be a very bad one because you don't have many titles available.

To the Team:

I have played map 2 and 3 and in both, indonesia doesn't found any new city. In the 2 it conquers a barbarian city that forms in the north but it still doesnt settle all the free land available.

The 3 pics attached are in the map 2 and the 2 pics with links are in map 3.

Same here...:goodjob:

I have a question, and I hope it doesn't offend the, "vision", of the mod. My only complaint with this mod was the removal of Corporations, so I would like to know if it's possible to re-enable them in their vanilla BTS form?

Played Test C, revision 4379 till 65AD as Japan on Emp.
Fracne is doing well they are in the top 20. China is ahead of every one but me in the extreme orient. South China is almost dead, killed by China and Austronesia who did not settle any thing on its island but attacked in indochina and conquered some cities there. Portugal is in the top 6 and Lisboa is the top city worldwide with lots of wonders.

is there new version ? i played 3.1 long ago.

is there new one?

or new scenario?

No. No. No.

Meanwhile massive changes were done since 3.1.
You should test the SVN version.

Hi, RI Team, I enjoy this mod a lot, but i have a question regarding Pagan Temples and a possible bug. I am playing 3.1 version of the mod. In my recent Mongolia game I can't build Shaman Gers in some of my Cities and can't see a reason why. I have the tech Mysticism and adopted Slavery and Paganism. The tech which will make it obsolete is still millennia away. Am I missing something? Is there a hidden limit on these buildings? Or is it a bug?

EDIT: Ok, nevermind. I figured it out. They were converted to a neighbour's religion. Damn, wanted to stay Pagan for a while :D ...I need pagan inquisitors! No, just kidding, would be kinda ahistorical ;)

Not really.. think of the Romans/Christians thing pre-313

BTW is adding religions on your list of things to do? Hellenism, Kemetism, etc? If not that's fine just curious

Thanks, Drakarska, I tried that but to no avail. Although listing the scourgeforge site as explicitly allowed on my firewall settings it won't download anything. :(

Now, another thing for the fabulous RI team:

Have you considered tweaking Judaism a little bit, at least for the 2 world maps? My concern is that Judaism spreads rapidly (at least in 3.1.) in contrast to other early religions. The whole pf Europe and Middle East get Jewish. By the time Christianity and Islam are founded civs have invested too much in Jewish buildings and maybe fear problems with fellow Jewish civs to consider converting to another later religion.
In order to give the other religions a better opportunity I'd suggest the following remedy: Make largescale spread of Judaism dependent on Jerusalem being conquered by another civ. As long as Jerusalem is in the hand of the Judean Kingdom the spread of Judaism should be very restricted or denied. This would be historical accurate since Judaism mainly spread through exiles, first after Nebudkadnezzar destroyed the first temple and then after the Jewish War in 70 AD and the Bar Kochba rebellion.
And maybe it's possible to deny Jerusalem/Judean Kingdom to found more than, say, 3 religions.
This is just a possible remedy, not a request or anything like that. I know you as a team have plenty of things to do and plenty of ideas to implement.

All those solutions will not be implemented by us due to a simple fact that they are 100% dependent on the particular World Map setup. Our mod is not just (and probably not even mainly) about the World Map. If we are to tweak any religions, we should take care that these tweaks are just as serviceable on random maps and in other scenarios. In general, the fact that there is little space for Christianity and Islam on World Map by the time they are founded is a known issue that concerns us. But we are trying to find a more universal solution.

Not really.. think of the Romans/Christians thing pre-313

BTW is adding religions on your list of things to do? Hellenism, Kemetism, etc? If not that's fine just curious

Not really. A large number of religions is a balance issues - the more of them are, the less civs per religion any given game has. After a certain point that just stops making sense - when everyone has a religion all to himeself, the whole inter-religion dynamic breaks down.

I would like to know if it's possible to re-enable them in their vanilla BTS form?

Yes, but you need know XML, Python and change the DLL to get done. It´s not easy.

Just hurry it up, I want to play :D
Do you know the RI SVN? It's a way that you have to decrease anxiety ...

Do you know the RI SVN? It's a way that you have to decrease anxiety ...
I play strictly multiplayer. Do you know how hard it is to convince other people to install SVN and all that junk just to play a game? That's why the stable release is needed.

Also, SVN version doesn't work for me properly, takes ages to load and stuff. I'm waiting on the release.

I believe they can make a release that packages up all those little graphic files that make the SVN versions too big and slow to be worth playing.
They could call it a Beta and ask for no comments if that's what they're worried about. That way those of us interested in playing would have something to play and wouldn't be bothering the developers.

On the other hand, they must have considered that and decided not to, so I'm probably missing something.
