Recommend an MMORPG to me

To solve the whole issue of MMORPG's lack of story, I think it would be cool if an MMORPG was made that started off with the world as an empty wilderness and then let players do as they pleased (within the limits of the game engine, obviously). See if they decide to build villages and cities together or form barabarian hordes or form an army and try to conquer the world. Or start a merchant company or start a bank to sponsor merchant companies or form a theives guild to rob banks. Actually that sounds a lot like Civilisation. Actually someone should make a Civilisation styled MMORPG, the challenge being that the people you rule are players as well and you have to focus on the internal politics as well as the external (assuming you want to climb the greasy pole to leadership). Actually I'm going to make that game.

And because I'm lazy and only know BASIC it'll be AWFUL. :p

Now before everyone proclaims "LOL WOW IZ 4 JERKS"...

World Of Warcraft. :D

Man! me and my friend were just talking about how amazing it would be if there was a game with pretty much no NPCs, every part of society would be a real player, and you could start businesses and break off into different factions. The only big probalem is that in a game, poeple will not be content to do the boring lowest jobs for very long, whereas in real life they will.

But still, they really should try and at least take a step towards the world being more affected by the players.

Actually I don't see why this couldn't be a Half Life mod or something. Natural Selection showed that you can build structures and interact with the game like a strategy/fps game. It could all take place in a timed round and could encompass just one era or all eras. It could also be simple with just mining and farming or complex with resources.

Back on topic, for story-heavy multiplayer games the two best options at the moment are Lord of the Rings Online or Guild Wars. Both have great stories, but LOTRO requires group missions to advance in story, (I played the beta and it was VERY easy to find groups) while Guild Wars can be soloed, (but henchmen suck and it can be difficult to find groups)

If you don't mind waiting a few months, Pirates of the Burning Sea and Tabula Rasa both promise to have branching storylines that depend on player decisions, which has never been done in an MMO before. Both look great, but I'd personally go with Tabula Rasa since it's being developed by Richard Garriot of Ultima fame.

I've been playing Rubies of Eventide for a while. It might be a little outdated and lacking a bigger playerbase, but its story is based on an unreleased novel, the community is great and the game is quite addictive. Plus it is free. It is run and managed and developed by volunteers. You can donate and get a few special items and a server cap bypass, the latter being not much needed though.

It has a general server, a Roleplay only server, and an unmoderated PVP server where you can do and say pretty much what you want.

It's pretty much the opposite of an MMO, but you Nethack is a huge time waster if you get into it. It is super complex and extremely challenging. Best of all it's free! It can run on virtually any existing computer nowadays. Unfortuneately it doesn't have alot of backstory, and leaves everything to your imagination. Also the graphics are bad. (normally it is ASCII, but it comes with a grapical version now. It also has a really really steep learning curve. Once you get into it it will all be worth it, and since it's free you have nothing to lose so why not try it out.

Are you serious?? I just checked out the Nethack site and it has the look of a 10 year old unix game.

Ya i mentioned that the graphics are bad, and I guess I should understand that it is not for everyone, but for those who don't care about graphics ery much, and like a challenge, it is a great game.

The game (Nethack) is actually 20 years old. It was released in 1987 and is the oldest game still in development ;).

If you like Nethack and don't mind the graphics... I recommend you try out Dwarf Fortress. ASCII graphics and it has a very steep learning curve, but it's a hugely fun game. It's still in Alpha though, so expect some quirks (it is stable though).

I actually looked at the thread for Dwarf Fortress in these forums, but never got around to downloading it. I will right now. Thanks for the suggestion. Also, do you have any idea why it says it will take up to one hour to generate worlds on 400MHz computers? That seems impossibly long.

The worlds are massive. On my P4 3.0 ghz it usually takes about 5 minutes to generate a world. However, you only have to generate a world once..

Anarchy Online

I've stopped playing it, but it entertained me for a couple of years, and best of all you can play the basic game for free.

The game has plenty of backstory, though the best of backstory is out of the game I think. There is a mini tv series, a novel, news stories and magazines. There are many NPCs, quests, in game events and locations that do have stories as well. (though the best of the story quests and locations are in the Shadowlands expansion which you can't play for free). The great backstory was one of the reasons I liked the game so much, however I think some of the best story elements were written out of the story or make rare updates.
Seconded.

After playing some of the fantasy based MMO games, I found A-O to be most refreshing. It also looks bloody good.

Looks bloody good? Now I always value gameplay over graphics but ever char. model in AO looks like an even more deformed version of Quasimodo.

Argh it's a trap!
