Reconnecting with Civ IV and needing help

Hi Everybody,

After some time away from CIV IV, I am looking to reconnect with Civ IV and I am looking for some help on a Vanilla game (V 1.74) with Freddy on Prince that I have started today. I am planning on a small continent map. I attached the starting file and screen shot of my start. My initial instinct is to settle in place and research fishery first to get the clams hooked up.

I would move the scout to see if settling on the wine would work. If there's an additional food resouce, I'd spend a turn to move the settler and slap my capital on top of the wine. After T6, extra commerce from the oasis and +2C city tile would help in your initial research.
 
I'f settle 1N probably, so I'd nove the scout 2E to see what's there.

Btw.: Can you maybe somehow get BtS? Basically nobody plays Vanilla today anymore, and BtS is one of the best addons I've ever seen, it justs adds so many great things to CIV.
 
There's been a recent thread about coastal vs inland capitals, iirc inland capitals won the debate.
I'd move the scout inland to see what's available. Riverside with 2 floodplains and sheep for food is decent, you can put a second or third city down for the clams later on.
 
Well inland is often preferable, but sometimes it's just not feasible to get an inland capitol. Lots of weak food sources here, but the odds of finding something significantly better don't appear to be very high.

I would follow Seraiel's advice. Check east with scout first, but probably settle 1N. Hunting and mining won't be too helpful here. Need fishing and maybe AH. Early production looks bad too. Pretty junky start IMO.
 
what is the benefit of building a city on the wine tile? Is there an article here that explains this mechanic?
 
I think the general rule is that if a tile produces more tokens of one type (hammers, food, commerce) WITHOUT the proper improvement than you would get anyway in a city (2 food, 1 hammer, 1 commerce) you will keep them for the city tile. So a plains hill or plains horse has 2 hammers without improvement and you will keep them when building a city on top. A grass horse has 2 food and one hammer, so you will not get any bonus in the city tile.

I do not know the wine yield without improvements, maybe you get an extra commerce at best.
 
I think only river wine is 2c. Its also important to note that extra yield from special terrain modifiers like forests and flood plains do not count. Settling in plains forest does not provide a 2H city tile just as settling on a FP doesn't give 3F.
 
That made me think... does settling on a FP that is converted into a 2f1h1c tile count towards the 0.4 (rounded down) unhealthiness for a city?

No, tiles are destroyed (not resources obv) when you settle on them, even oasis fresh water I think.
 
Settling on an oasis is impossible afaik. Settling next to an oasis retains the fresh water bonus.
 
Yeah, it took me a while to figure out what counts as terrain and what as "feature" or whatever.

This reminds me of another terrain question I am not sure about: Do cities on tundra, ice, desert work as links in chain irrigation? I know that cities on hills do not and I guess tundra will work but I am not sure about the others. It could be relevant when settling a desert tile next to an oasis with grass on the other side of the city but no other source of fresh water nearby.

(Again, a moot complaint but I really dislike that there is no terraforming whatsoever for the sucky tiles of tundra, desert, ice. Irrigated oasis was a pretty good tile in civII)

You can only irrigate Tundra, if it has freshwater. Irrigation chaints through several Tundra tiles is not possuible, ICing from one Tundra tile with freshwater that's followed by non-Tundra-tiles is possible though.

It works with tundra. too.
 
And about settling - for me it is riverside wine, but check the surrounding. If there is food 2E from scout, settle 1N for foodrich capitol. Otherwise I will gamble and settle on wine
