Red/Black blob issue

I recently had to upgrade my video card when my old card died. With my old card (7000 series NVidia), I would see intermittent problems with the red and black blobs. I always mentally wrote it off as a glitch with a card that was having issues. I upgraded to a 200 series NVidia and the blobs have not made an appearance since.

This may not help find a solution, but it does bring up the fact that drivers and/or video cards may be a factor in the blobs...

Never had the blobs until ICE phase though.

I don't think it has anything to do with your video card. I play on two computers one with an ATI 512 mb card and the other with an nVidia 256 mb card. My drivers are the most current available.

I get red and black blobs on both.

And I haven't changed graphic card since forever and for me it started with 0.40. Sorry no, I had one encounter with a red blob on 0.34 (screenshot posted in that cosmetic thread) and one encounter with the black blob (it was an warrior (or something similar), although only the lower half of one of the warriors that was a black blob.

Windows XP, SP3. Patch L. Larry is a big red blob:

He gets on the galley, plays a few bars of weasel, then goes to kill Mokka. He is now a big black blob from the waist down.

After returning to the mainland, he's fine. Incidentally, I'd play this game if it was rendered with ASCII characters (i.e. this issue doesn't bother me at all, I vote you move it way down the priority list).

IIRC, I remember reading something about it being an issue with the first unit in the Civ IV's unit table.

playing .40L, seems to happen a lot on my laptop, can't recall it ever happening on my desktop.

Thanks guys, this is all great information. Unfortunatly I'm not seeing a pattern.

Usually red blobs are from an incorrect art assignment. I don't think that is the case here since it occurs in multiple units, reloads fix the problem, if happens in one unit in a group but not others, etc.

It seems like we may be hitting a limit for x amount of nif shapes in the game at once. Maybe 0.40 pushed us over the edge. That would explain why lesser video cards have more problems with this.

Ive been looking at the screen shots and I'm seeing a lot of huge maps. Has anyone hard this problem with the standard or smaller map or early in the game before there are many units wandering around? Most of the scenarios use standard or smaller maps.

I believe the one I posted was on a Standard map. Of course, my modding may have effected it.

I never play bigger than standard. And I never open the world builder if that helps.
(And I've never seen the blobs, Ati Radeon x800 256mb, with Omega drivers)

This is a blobbed out Shadow Hero.

Yes, I do play all my games on Huge maps, but the Memory Allocation Failures and CTDs come much later than the Blobs when the map is full.

I think there is a bit of a pattern developing.

I think the Stooges are one of the most blobbed units. I always get them.

I wouldn't call my ATI 512mb video card lesser. What do you need to play the game?

One more thing: I have never seen the blobs in any Fall Further games I've played, but I got them back in .34 FFH all the time and reported them.

I always play on huge maps and have seen the blobs only occasionally. (NVIDIA GeForce 8600 video card, if that helps.)

Had a red blob in my most recent game, happened after I reloaded an autosave, my Frigate was a red blob, but after I upgraded it to a Man-O'-War it was fine. This is later in the game, obviously (somewhere in the 400s, I think), since I'd researched Blasting Powder and had hooked up a gunpowder resource to allow the Man-O'-War.

Didn't keep a screen shot, sorry, since it happened before you started this thread.

Could it be a bad art assignment only for one of the idle animations? That would mean when you select/move/attack the unit it should clear up the issue.

I would think so if it applied to only specific units, but Acheron, Archers, Orthus, Hill Giants and Griffons?

I had it with a hunter in the fall of guatine scenario, but that was some time ago.

I only see blobs rarely and only the black on the lower half, currently have one on a warrior. I think it appeared afterIi went into worldbuilder to have a shuffty at the world as a whole. Its on an Amurite warrior.

i had it for a captured hn spider. i would move a unit into the city, then back out, and the problem would correct.

but for other times, (usually workers or warriors) nothing but reloading helps.

Every time I have gotten the blobs, it has happened when I loaded a save game. It has never happened right in the middle of a game. Sometimes reloading fixes it, sometimes moving another unit over it and sometimes it doesn't get fixed until I play a few turns, save again and reload.

All the games I play on my laptop are standard size.
The tiny red blob below is one of two triremes sitting on top of a pirate's cove.
Not sure why it isn't the size of every other blob I've seen though.
