Renaming units?

Does anyone make much use of this feature?

I just discovered it recently and find it handy for those units that are about to reach Level 4/5 so I can build Heroic Epic/West Point. It reminds me that the "King's Own Rangers" (or whatever) shouldn't be treated as cannon fodder.

Still, I can't help imagining the other units, wounded after a fierce battle, watching with disgust as the "glory boys" come in just to take out the enemy city's last badly-injured catapult for the low-risk XP.

I rename them once in a while.
A scout who survived 3 bear attacks (!!) was named "Bearkiller" for obvious reasons. Eventually I retired him to the capital.
It might be good to have some interesting names added as defaults...

i rename every unit with more than 4 promotions.
and ships get always names when they were built :D

I rename certain units to remind me what I'm planning them for. A lot of my mounted units end up as "Escort Great Merchant". I'll also often name my first warior "Larry" or "Ted" just for sh-ts and giggles.

I always name my ships, but nothing else.

Good thing units can't frag each other.

Naming units can keep me from mistakenly using special units for fodder. Fodder get names like "Dead Meat" and "Suicide Cat I". Maybe that's not good for morale.

So... um... how do you do it, anyway? :p

Click on the units name in the little box in the bottom left.

I'm so glad I started this thread. I'm lovin' the responses. "Larry"? Classic...

I love the idea of naming each ship. D'oh! Should have thought of that one.

I'm playing as Rome in the current game, and this feature allows me, Romaphile that I am, to correct what I regard as the egregious misnaming of Rome's UU. The Praetorians were the Emperor's honour guard, more useful politically than in the field. They now all become "Legions", as they should be: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Although I had one double woodsman-promo'd unit slogging through so much jungle I renamed them "Caesar's Swamprats"...

"Larry"

Huh, I always name my first guy Murray.

Murray gets around a lot and is usually the first one to get trampled under when the avalanche of poo hits the fan.

Murry also gets left behind by his chums quite a bit, good little speed bump he is.

Ah Murray, I salute you.

I tend to name my units in the order I build them, like 1st Longbowmen, 23rd Infantry, etc. Once a unit gets enough promotions under their belt so that they are specialized for a certain task, I make their names more unique, such as M*A*S*H 4077th for a unit with several medic promotions, <city name> Garrison for highly promoted city defenders, and Royal Dragoons for my elite cavalry units.

As others have mention, this sometimes keeps me from using those units as cannon fodder, but when it is late at night and I have been playing for 12 hours straight, I still occasionally forget to look at the name of the unit before charging them headlong to their death.

or bob? (stupid 10 letter)

Does it show the names in MP? I'd be tempted to name all of my units the wrong type in a MP game to annoy the other players.

Interested in automatic naming?

You might like my Unit Statistics Mod. Its primary function is to save the number of kills, the damage done etc., but it comes with three different name generators.

I rename them on occassion, usually to something like 'Royal Guard' or something corny like that :-P

I had an idea once of renaming entire groups of units to 'Division I, II, III and so on...but I never really got around to doing it, mainly because I never had an army big enough.

I dont name my units, i simply Cntrl (Num) them to quick group them, then if i need them i press 1 and i got my lvl 4 Pikeman, is this different?

I always name my nuclear missles, e.g. CAR GOES BOOM!, THE STINKIEST FART, and YOUR FEET SMELL
