Researchable PM-based history quiz

 for those elaborate answers.

:wallbash: I of course recognized that jade buffalo originating from somewhere in China, and the other artwork being from Benin/Dahomey - but somehow I thought that wouldn't be what you're looking for, and look for the exact origin. Oh well; my idiocy.

Most of the pictures of Jan Zizka
Note this picture also depicts the calix - and in fact, it was that symbol that finally lead me to Ziska, NOT they one-eyedness.

Johnson is generally considered the greatest blues singer of all time
Veto. Vigorous veto. The Greatest Blues Musician, or the Greatest Blues Guitarist, yes.
But as a singer, he wasn't that great at all ;).

Good point, happily conceded. He wasn't Howlin' Wolf or Jimmy Witherspoon. Of course, when people call him the greatest blues singer of all time, they mean the best all-round artist, rather than the best vocalist or even necessarily the most accomplished guitarist. His performances, taken holistically, are the closest to high art that the blues or even, arguably, anything in modern American culture has ever come.

So it's over to Adso de Fimnu, who scraped a one-point victory over Doc Tsiolkovski.
I wasn't really planning to win - I think you were a bit generous with extra points, Plotinus!
Rambuchan said:
Now we just have to hope that Adso de Fimnu doesn't bust our balls too much
Oh, I have no intention of doing that.

I shall think of some questions and post them by-and-by.

Alrighty. This ought not be quite as difficult, though there are a few questions that may be a bit tricky. I have focused on my interests, that is, culture and the arts. (And I'll admit, I tend to be Eurocentric...)

Twelve points possible, though, like Plotinus, I'll award extra points for answers of ingenious originality.

1. Name a Kushan monk who was instrumental in the transmission of Buddhism to China.

2. (Two points) Who is this person? And who painted this person?

3. Which Turkish sultan drowned his entire harem in the Bosporus?

4. For what purpose did Haydn’s wife use his music manuscripts?

5. Which famous singer used to sing Philip V of Spain to sleep every night?

6. Where was the birthplace of the first bishop of Axum?

7. (Two points) Who painted this? What three great men are depicted in it?

8. What culture produced this artifact?

9. (Two points) These three images are all related to a famous person. Who is he?

Let's give it 'til Wednesday, shall we? (That's Wednesday here, by the way: I'm at least five hours behind you Europeans...)

I hope to find the time to give it a good go!
We can always extend the deadline. Nobody's submitted answers yet. (Though the more people that play, the better, I should think...)

Erm... I can only spot two people in the picture for question 7.
Yes, well, you have to look very closely...

Rambuchan is first to submit, again, putting him in the lead with four points.
(Woo, 300th post.)
Update: Bed_head7 has submitted, making the score sheet as follows:

Rambuchan 4
bed_head7 5

Well, I can never get any questions in the non researching one, since I am too lazy to ever finish any books and learn anything. But if you manage to get any more, you may have me beat. I haven't managed to figure out any leads on 2, 7, or 8, and I don't know who that person is in the first picture in 9, though I swear I recognize him. Which is really bad, since I thought I might have the person to which 9 referred based on the second and third clues which seemed simple enough, but even with researching that person I have not been able to learn the identity of the man in the picture, which may mean my guess is wrong.

[I really ought to find me a less stupid username. "Damn you, bed_head7" just doesn't sound as dramatic as a damn you directed elsewhere would.]

I certainly have! But all I can see is a person resting his hand on the stone bust of another person. Where's the third? I always thought I had good eyes...

I am having the same trouble myself.

Maybe it's the model for the man in the hat?

Well, to be fair, it cannot be seen at all in that resolution. Even if you d/l the pic and zoom in. Adso, did you shrinked it after conversion?
I take the liberty to post a cleaner version. Not perfect, but you can at least get a grasp where another portrait could be.

(If you don't like that, Adso, I can of course remove it again!)

 I could see more in Adso's version of the pic Doc. But anyway, I believe you can execute a painting of someone without having to depict them in a figurative sense. Why is this such new news to people? Btw - I haven't got any of the three men right yet myself

Adso's version is brighter (artifically IMHO) - but you can apply the very same to 'my' pic yourself.
However, that thing that does matter cannot be seen in Adso's. Not even if you know it.
And I do not think anyone could figure out the persons on the painting without either recognizing all 3 portaits, especially the hidden one - or recognizing the painter.

I'm a bit like a diet Coke, but replace sugar with graphics imaging talent.

I couldn't agree more!!! I'm still floundering. It's clearly a great question Adso and I'm clearly never going to get anything to do with right at all.
