Restarting if in a bad starting postion?

Might have. I think its always a good idea to move a worker to scope out better territory, especially when you start so close to a high perch like a mountain. Who knows, maybe he had all that cattle in his starting 9, but maybe there was a dyes or a wine (or even better, a coastal tile IN ADDITION to the river) that would have allowed him to score an even more godly start.

Yes you are right when you said it is a good idea to move the worker before settling in order to scope out better territory, but you may also try to avoid loosing worker turn, and taking your exemple, I would not have moved my worker on the mountain, when I already have 4 cattles AND a river. Who care to have a luxury within the 9 starting tiles ?
Connecting a luxury will NEVER be my first working duty with 4 cattles around.

Heh. I just quit a game without taking a single turn this afternoon. I was Japanese, a single green square at the edge of a peninsula completely surrounded by mountains. I didn't see the point since I'd never get beyound size 1.

Depends on the seriousness of the position we're talking about. If it's serious to the point where I just cannot get any good cities going anytime soon, I'll quit if I'm not feeling up to the challenge. Or perhaps if I'm on an small island. In that case I'll check for resources. If there's no iron and/or horses on that island and very isolated, I'll quit. Once I had a great empire that consisted of only 7 cities and my island had EVERY resource in the game. And this was on Conquests. So you never know.

I'm still playing at Chieftain, so I will restart if there's no terrain improvements nearby. The only two games I've restarted so far, I was surrounded by forest and mountain in pretty much all directions, and ATM I need a good starting loc to do well. I expect that I'll restart less and less as I get more skilled.

I usually shop around for starts unless I'm committed to playing a game for the sake of the challenge. Otherwise, I'm not going to waste time on a game if my empire is bound to be dismal. Sometimes I will pass up a good start if it's boring. I like terrain with a lot of character as well as good city sites.

I've never restarted for a better location. In fact I like when I'm stuck on an island, I like jungle too(tropical feel to it).
I hate tundra the worst though.
