Jacoby Merhoose is in his office, examining his monthly reports…
(A buzzer sounds at his desk)
Jacoby Merhoose (speaking into intercom): Yes, who is it?
Intercom: It’s the head scientist at the Bahamas Research Base, here to deliver his report.
Jacoby Merhoose (speaking into intercom): Excellent. Send him in.
(Dr. B. Allistaec enters Jacoby’s office)
Jacoby Merhoose: What news do you bring?
Dr. B. Allistaec: Well, Project Kepler is proceeding on Schedule. The scientists at the Bahamas Base are working nearly around the clock, & morale is very high. Indeed, the project is ahead of schedule; the research phase is about 70% complete. We were only expected to be 45% complete at this time.
Jacoby Merhoose: That is great news! Anything else?
Dr. B. Allistaec: Yes, actually. As I said, morale is high, but that is due mostly to the intense patriotism & love of science shared by all present at the Base. If arrangements could be made for a small amount of creature comforts to be maintained at the base, then morale could be kept at the present level.
Jacoby Merhoose: Say no more. It shall be done immediately. Before you go, care for a drink?
Dr. B. Allistaec: Actually, I should really be heading back to the base.
Jacoby Merhoose: No no, I insist. (speaking into intercom) Dorothy, bring in two drinks.
(Dorothy enters, holding two glasses of champagne. She hands one to Governor Merhoose, & the other to Dr. B. Allistaec)
Jacoby Merhoose: Thank you, Dorothy. So, doctor, what do you think of the expansion into old Mississippi?
Dr. B. Allistaec: Well, sir, I’m not really qualified to offer a professional opinion on matters so far out of my area of expertise…
Jacoby Merhoose: Nonsense, doctor! Everyone has an opinion, & I at the moment, I am interested in yours.
Dr. B. Allistaec: Well, I suppose it’s a good move. Ever since the forests have grown back, the wild animals have returned, & that’s good, I guess. Sir, I really must be going.
Jacoby Merhoose: Ah, fine. Have a good flight back to Bahamas Base. Dorothy, what do you think of our expansion into old Mississippi?
Dorothy: Well, sir, much like the respectable Dr. Allistaec, I don’t possess the qualifications to offer a relevant opinion.
Jacoby Merhoose: Well, offer it anyway.
Dorothy: I am actually of the same mind as Dr. Allistaec, but for different reasons, I suspect. If the area could be set up as a wildlife preserve, & protected, then perhaps large game such as bears & bison will enter the area. And you know how much people are willing to pay to hunt large game…
Jacoby Merhoose: My thoughts exactly! This is why I value you as an assistant.
Intercom: Governor, the Air Force Chief of Staff & the Head of the Department of Labor are here to see you.
Jacoby Merhoose (speaking into intercom): Send up the Chief of Staff. I’ll have Dorothy entertain the Head of Labor while he waits.
Dorothy: I’ll go now, sir.
Jacoby Merhoose: Yes, off you go.
(Jacoby begins rearranging the notes on his desk as he prepares for his meeting with the Chief of Staff)
