RFC Classical World

I'm not sure how I missed this before but there's no independent Armenian state on any of my source maps until around 180BC so I guess I will move their spawn date.

I will also move the start date of the mod back 20 years to 320BC. this makes the Seleucid start a little less realistic but makes the Mauryan one more realistic and gives everyone more time to achieve some UHVs and prepare for the Romans and Han. its only about 13 more turns but in the case of the Seleucids conquests and the Qin wonder goals (great wall and terracotta army before Han spawn) it will make a difference.

The Armenian change will be good. On the one hand, it removes the luck factor of whether they will found Trapezus or not. On the other hand, it removes the possibility to gift cities in Greece to avoid Roman conquest until that date. I'm still uncertain if I consider myself using an exploit when I do that.

I was going to change the 3rd Seleucid goal to "control x provinces in 75BC". probably 10. mesopotamia, syria, judea, egypt, anatolia, greece, thrace form the 1st goal with the eastern parts tasken away , + 3 others. this would make giving away cities less attractive. I think you should take a big stability hit for giving away cities in this context also.

I wouldn't worry to much about 20 years in historicity if it impedes game balance. The Arabs start in 600 AD in RFC as well, and the Sassanids are ahistorically dead already.

the crashes are fixed in my version and the start date is moved back to 320BC. the Seleucids, Ptolemys, Carthaginians, Mauryans and Qin start in 320BC, the Tocharians, Sabeans, Pandyans, Nubians and Celts start in 300BC.

should I commit?

Why not?

just checkin. I'll do it when I get home. I'm thinking of making a 225AD start also.

A 225AD start would be nice, but I think we first should balance the old map first. A complete tech-tree, buildings list, unit upgrades etc. should have priority IMO.

yes I agree.

first I will finish the UHVs. I have 20 done, 16 more to go... if anyone has ideas for Funan, Dacia, Goguryeo or Japan I'd love to hear them.

For the Japanese, look in the civilopedia. (I already put the text there, but they aren't coded yet) I did the same with some UP. You only have to code them.

I really could hardly be happier about these AI results at 30BC. Roman-Parthian frontier and Indo-Greek expansion right on schedule.

Looking good!

I've been playing around as Carthage. There are many nice things in place already, such as respawning Neapolis if you try to raze it before the Roman spawn. The Roman flip of Syracuse opens up a strategic choice: do you let them have it or face a war+Roman invasion? Some comments:

1) As playing the 320 BC scenario, there is a whole bunch of civs spawning at the same time (I think 300 BC), could they be spread out by a few turns?
2) Are the goals 6/10 of any luxuries, or different luxuries?
3) Goal 1+3 (control 6/10 luxuries) feel quite similar. I don't have the civic list, but if there is a civic corresponding to Merchant republic, could a possible goal be to adopt (and therefore research) that civic by a certain date?
4) I think the amount of mercenaries could be toned down a little for Carthage. As of now, defeating the roman spawning conquerors was very easy as you could hire a large group of cheap mercenaries.

More generally: what type of feedback would be most useful? Feedback on the relative difficulty of the current UHV? How fun the different civs are in general? How historic the course of play is? Suggestions for modification of UHV, unique units or unique powers? Suggestions for techs, buildings, units or mercenaries? Balance discussion regarding the map, e.g. resources?

As of now, I have mostly thought about the first two aspects when playing, but if significant changes of e.g. UHVs are still on the roadmap such feedback might be premature?

thanks again for the feedback. I'm interested in any and all comments, almost nothing is carved in stone. I'm trying to get UHVs done for all 36 civs so I'm not fussing over them too much now, just anything reasonably historical and doable.

I will change the third carthage goal to controlling a number of mediterranean cities I think. ultimately I'd like to find a way for them to trade for tin and amber in northern europe. something like colonies in civ III if I can code it. for the luxury goal, I think multiples of the same luxury count, but I'm not sure.

I will try again to do something about the early mercs. and I will get rid of the popups for the 300BC civs and maybe spread them out a little.

playing carthage now and I remember how the 2 luxury were supposed to work. first, multiples do not count more than once, but trade counts.

the first goal is 6 luxuries. there are 3 within easy reach of Carthage: pearls, ivory and silver. so you need three more. athens is an easy grab for a wine and another silver, which you can trade. tyre will get you dyes. syracuse or neapolis will also get you wine. you can also trade your salt, horses, iron etc.

for the 10 luxuries I was thinking you would have to make contact with at least Saba for the incense or India for pepper, cinnamon, gems.

A wine appears in Sicily and you get a dye in Masilla. There is also a fur in France, so for me the first route to try was to strike against the Celts.

29 civs have coded UHVs now. not all of them are incredibly creative, but the focus is there anyway.

This looks like a very promising mod! I will test it out as soon possible, as it seems like there is still a lot of testing that needs to go into this.
Just looking at the pictures, it doesn't seem like you have added provinces have you? If you have not, I highly recommend that you do so, it adds a lot to a game ;)

Unlike it seems to you, we do have provinces. Don't worry about that. ;)

@the Turk. thanks for the interest and yes tons of testing and balance to be done. all UHVs should be done later tonight. they are all listed in the 3rd post of this thread so please comment.

The UHVs look good, especially for a first draft. I'm not too fond of "control territory your historical counterpart controlled" goals unless they're really remarkable achievements (like Alexander's or the Roman Empire), but that's of course personal preference. But for example the Ptolemids certainly could replace theirs with something culture or science related.
