Prolouge​

The Spanish had only recently settled New World colonies, and those were on islands in the Caribbean. But now, with the onset of the First World War, Spain has collapsed under the might of Nederland, just like France, Germany, and Italy before it. Russia to the west was also collapsing, with Sankt-Petersborg and other eastern cities under the control of Nederland and Moscow under siege. The situation in the Americas, though, was stable. Or so the Hoge Raad thought...

The Beginnings of the Verenigde Staten van Amerika
1778​

“The Amerikan People have been oppressed by the Company and the Hoge Raad for many years. It is time to change that. Let us rise up, and form a Union for our prosperity and our posterity.”

The Nederlandse Noord-Amerika Company had held sway over Noord-Amerika for since the settlement of Nieuw Amsterdam in the early 1500s. In all that time, the NNAC had usually been fair to the colonies. Usually, that is, until the onset of the First World War. Taxes were raised, and conscripted armies were raised from the colonies that now mattered very little to Nederland or the NNAC. The people of the colonies, needless to say, were resentful of this treatment. However, they had no outlet on which to focus their anger. The emmigration of a certain Diederick van Amsing, an out of luck noble from Parjis, in January, 1778, changed all of that.

When Amsing got to ‘s-Gravenhage he noticed the mood that the people were in, and quickly capitalized on that. He turned out to have a talent for rallying the people, and within two months had rallied the populace of both ‘s-Gravenhage and Nieuw Amsterdam.

They threw out their garrisons, and proclaimed independence. With Nederland occupied with the Great War, the Hoge Raad decided that it could not afford to worry about some little upstart colonists. They acknowledged the new nation in Amerika, and moved all their troops to the more northerly city of Middelburg or to Maastricht in the south.

Amsing managed to ride the wave of popularity straight to the leadership of the nation. He set up a puppet legislative body, known as the Gratis Raad, or Free Council, with members elected by the land-holding people of the new “Verenigde Staten van Amerika.” They approved anything that the Brenger van Vrijheid put forth, and would continue this tradition with all of his succesors. He named his position Voorzitter, and set it up so that his handpicked successor would be installed in the position after his death.

Immediately, Voorzitter Diederick van Amsing began to order large amounts of troops and settlers west, ordering them to set up grand cities to expand the Amerikan nation. This made him even more popular, not the least because he also declared that the barbarian Indianen to the west were only obstacles to be destroyed.

As of December, 1778, Amerika and the VSVA were ready to soar...

As for the Amerikaanse, the quote was an english translation. Due to Dutch prominence, and by virtue of their being the first European nation to discover and colonise the Americas, the english translation uses a k. I wanted to keep you feeling like you were in a dutch settlement.

And for the Indianen, thanks for the tip!

For an in-world explanation for the potentially strange Dutch to come, you could just claim that it is "Googleese" or something like that, descended from babelfish yahoo very very rural NL dialects Kinda like RL Afrikaans's origin!

Anyway, I look forward to seeing where this goes. I'm guessing you'll give new meaning to the flag of the Cross of Burgundy to fly over Florida soon.

1796​

“The lands that make up the continent of Noord-Amerika are ours for the taking. Let us prove to our descendents that we are worthy of the title Amerikan!”

January, 1779, seemed a normal year, but it, in truth, laid the foundations for the VSVA’s future expansionist policies. This is because, on January 1 a child was born on the eastern frontier to Willem van Tjeerd and his wife, Caterine. The child was a boy, and was named Cornelis van Tjeerd. Cornelis proved to be very adept at school, and his favorite subject was undoubtedly the history lessons on wars past. When he had the choice between attending Universiteit van Amerika or Militaire Academie van Amerika he chose MAVA. He finished his education in 1784 and was made a captain of a rifleman unit that was to head west to combat the Cherokee tribe that had recently gone on the warpath.

Regardless, he had to trudge west through the forests that still hadn’t been cleared. Many of his men were said to have deserted. It is most likely that, if this actually happened, they deserted to the newley founded city of Amsingstad on a bay at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

When his men crossed the Mississippi River, between the points where it branched off into the Missouri and Ohio Rivers, they were surprised to meet a large band of Cherokee Indianen waiting for them. They managed to kill about a third of the Indianen force before they had to retreat back across the river. Tjeerd’s men took a large amount of casualties, but nothing crippling.

They probably could have taken the rest of the force by themselves, but with a larger amount of casualties. Luckily, they didn’t have to. A riflemen force escorting a band of settlers northwest ran into the same band of Indianen. They destroyed about half of the remaining force, enough so that, when Tjeerd’s men struck again, the outcome was a forgone conclusion.

Tjeerd proved to be a political as well as military mastermind. He managed to get a transfer to the only calvalry force that Amerika possessed by pulling a few strings, and more than a few public appearances, and articles, talking about his “bravery in the face of the terrible onslaugh.” In any event, this had an unexpected bonus. The calvalry had been ordered to attack the major native city, conquered from the Aztecs a while before, Calixtlahuaca. The first assault would only destory half of the defenders. The seige would go on for 6 years, until 1796.

These were not the only major events that happened in Amerika in the 1790’s. In 1793 an emissary from the failing Islamic Kingdom of Portugal offered an open borders agreement. Amsing decided that the trade Portugal could provide in the short time it had left would be a benifit to Amerika, and thus concluded Amerika’s first major international action succesfully.

Amsing was also suprised and delighted to learn that Amerika was the fifth wealthiest nation on the planet. He immediately declared January 12 to be a national holdiay, called Dankzegging.

In the meantime, John Barlow, an immigrant from England, would also make a major difference in the history of the VSVA. He became an advisor to Amsing, now at 45 years of age, and advocated the creation of an intelligence agency similar to the one in Nederland. Amsing followed his suggestion, and created the Inlichtingendienst, the agency that would be his own demise in years to come.

In February, 1793, the city of Nieuw Parjis was founded, after the hometown of the Brenger van Vrijheid. It was founded on the Grote Meren, especially in between Meer Bovenmeer and Meer Michigan.

In 1794 the VSVA had its second major international deal. Emissaries from the Sultanate of Misr contacted Amsing, and offered a deal. Cleopatra would open the borders of Misr to Amerikans, in exchange for the opening of Amerikan borders to Egyptians.

Back at Claixtlahuaca, there was no real contest, as only two major defensive units were in the city at the time. The siege had entered its sixth year, when at last the calvalry broke into the city. When victory was assured, Cornelis van Tjreed, being the political mastermind that he was, sent a runner back to Amsingstad with a newspaper story to print, which naturally cast him as the hero of the battle. He then proceeded to take part in the storm that the Amerikan soldiers were unleashing on the inhabitants of Calixtlahuaca. The rape, pillage, and killings went on for a week. The ones that died were lucky, considering the fate that would befall the inhabitants who survived.

I was actually thinking of that, something similar to American English v. The King's Own English.

I have absolutely no idea how that pertains to the Netherlands... help!
