RFC Europe playtesting feedback thread

idk the coloneis have a cost in gold anyhow?

I had a game with Austria! it was a total dissaponment :(
took hungary at the start, a bit later the rest of my uhv 1 and a bit more. i was fine for a while, score leader after 1500. but it was a lost game anyhow. Byz hade 3 vassals france got 5 and i was between them alone :D i cloundt collapse france with plunder and city capture :( and at 1600ad i got soooo goddamn bored that i quited..... so imo they need some change...
anyway a late game is "allways" unbalanced. there rise 2-3 superpower and thats it. the france-burgundy-germany trio plays Highlander!!! (only 1 can stay)

so this game was good only to fing an AI bug:

France biulding manor house happily while Westminster Abbey is biult by them too :D:D

you see?

View attachment 358707

the date is the same. and noone else could built it whom they could conquer it....

ps: Abinst i dont have a save just from a lot later... :S
ps2: in the latest (1086) svn byz become extemly powerfull at AI hands

the french can build their UB (Manor House) even after researching the tech that makes "normal" manor houses obsolete. This gives France a lot of potential stability.

-> no bug.

and no, the colonies don't have a gold cost yet but they will get one in one of the next updates.

Yeah, I'm working on the colony cost at the very moment
There is an issue with one of the widget's in the c++ code, hopefully I will find it soon

About the Manor House/Chateau:
I can live with it either way. Should Chateaus also obsolete with Manor Houses, or do they need this additional bonus?

I think the best option would be "Chateau no longer gives + stability" (only +2 hammers or whatever the bonus was), if that is feasible with the code.
If that is difficult, I think either way is fine. (I've never played France beyond 900AD) With the buildings AI-France has more stability and is more likely to be a major power, which usually is fine as it makes the game more interesting. And if the human player has France he had to manage UHV1, so by the time he reaches the tech for obsolation, he probably won't care either way because he'll have almost won.

(also this seems to allow "conquer the whole world"-strategies, which might be fun, so I lean towards keeping it the way it is.)

I don't really care about the colony costs (at least untill we get random events^^), but what about the new civs? (I know I'm annoying :D )

I guess the manor house obsoletes to make the new stability buildings balanced. The french Chateau should then also be obsolete. Their UP is already OP.

And by the way. Byzantiums UP is worthless for the human. Why not give them a new UP and give the holder of Constantiople that new power? "Core provinces never collapse"?

This is more of a feature request:

Could it be made that the player gets the choice if he wants to accept cities flipping to his side upon start? (else they disband)

Since usually you don't get more than 2-4 cities joining you, it shouldn't really be annoying for the player.
The idea came when I started a game with Portugal and my fellow Spanish and Cordobans had settled cities in really stupid positions next to Lisboa.
-> they flipped to me, I tried gifting them away (since they only prolonged my border with Spain and then they get annoyed with me) and then using the next war to burn the city, but no, since it "had belonged to me" I didn't even get that choice but had to retake it -.-
With Portugal you usually want to run civics that are better suited for small empires, so having 1-2 more cities that don't contribute anything can really hurt you (and you may never lose one city, so hooray even more for stupid border-cities with Spain)

maybe, I'm no modder, all I want, is that the idea is given some thought. If it is difficult to implement then forget it.
I just thought that it might be possible, since in Vanilla Civ you get this option when a city flips to you due to culture (and also here, now that I think of it).

I don't know if this was reported already (it is version 1.1), but here we go. Playing as Arabia, hiring some mercenary pirates to help me against the Spanish, and there it is! Mid-land!

The game just seems weird, you haven't explored Europe yet??

But then, well... happens. I've never had the option to get a merc ship but then I've never played past 1650...
I guess for the time being you have to really check the province before hiring one of them :)

Yeah, well, Ifriqiya is the province. I was expecting it to arrive in Tunis.

And why would I explore Europe? Those infidels just sent a inquisitor in right after my Islamic missionary. I am still focusing my missionaries on the Ottomans.

1. Trade
2. Convert those heathens!

;)

this is from my last game with Arabia, I won before the Ottomans even appeared:

The Norse are quite welcoming towards Islam, the Polish don't mind, yeah Venice will eradicate it, but then it takes them some time to do this. And if you play Germany and France against each other you can spread your religion to one of them and possibly win even before 1300 AD.

with Arabia I go:
1. conquer the 2 Byzantine Cities north of your start + Alexandria (usually within first 10 turns)
2. make peace with Byzantium. (if you manage to raze/conquer the north african city of Byzantium before this, good, if not...no problem)
3. build 2-3 ships to meet bulgaria and possibly France.
4. Jerusalem and the neighbouring cities produce spearmen/ghazi to defend against barbs and later the crusades
5. Byzantium will sooner or later declare war on Bulgaria. Join in and get open borders with Byzantium.
6. the 2 "ex-byzantine" cities in the north of your empire should start producing missionaries non-stop (I expect you have walls there by now and maybe even a house of wisdom)
7. send 2-4 ghazi to Europe to meet everybody and maybe grad an undeffended city
8. send 2-4 ghazi along north africa to conquer the barb cities for uhv2
9. declare war on byzantium/get the final north african cities you need (I usually do this just before the time limit ends)
10. gift bad north african cities to Cordoba, focus on missionaries for Byzantium/Europe
...

your ghazi are marvelous units and most of europe won't have anything to stop them around 900-1000AD.
don't try to found to many cities or focus too much on wonders/research, you won't need it. you will need troops to kill the crusaders and the barbs and then only missionaries (plus the aforementioned few conquerer units)

edit: lets continue this discussion here: Strategies for Arabia

But how do you manage to focus on spreading Islam before the end of UHV2 (1200 something)?

UHV2 is easy. It's essentially UHV1 plus Cyrenacia, Tarabalus, Tunis and founding a couple of cities west of Tunis. Personally, I usually use my starting horse archers to get all the cities along the southern Med coast right up to Tunis. Then all you need is one more settler for UHV2.

I think the first UHV for Arabia could be replaced with something...a bit more demanding, or is the idea to force Arabia to found an early city in the province Arabia?
Since UHV covers the same provinces couldn't they be merged?
Instead they could get some research goal maybe?

I think Emperor currently is quite nice, while I'm sure that it would still the winnable most of the times if it were a little harder, the fun probably would go out of it, so I recommend keeping it more or less like it is.
With Germany I was able to build an Empire from Bordeaux to Warsaw, from Amsterdam to Firenze by ~1520 but Spain and England (and the Ottomans) managed to get a lot of wonders and colonies, which usually doesn't happen on Monarch ;)
And there were basically no collapses (apart from the usual ones like Kiew or Bulgaria)

Attached is my suggestion for new Byzantine UHV2:

The rulers of the Mediterranean
- Control every port in the Mediterranean in 1200AD

Much more fun than building those two settlers for the two Anatolian cities UHV 2. Attached is my 1182 where I own all the cities (except Roma). We could of course keep the 1282 AD time limit.

And UHV1 was done in 927 AD, maybe we should change that one too.
