EDIT:
NEWCOMERS: There was previously a different version of this story, but the save got overwritten, so I ended up starting a new game and story.

Author's Note

Welcome, all. This is my third story, although the first two ended prematurely as complete fiascos. The story I am about to write will revolve around Britain, as the title suggests. I am hoping I will be able to carry out this story to completion.

I will be using RFC and v 1.7 of Leoreth's modmod, with my own modifications:

  • Colonial civs get reduced stability penalty for owning cities outside of the core area AND penalty for number of cities is halved (applies only outside of the Mediterranean (Portugal, Spain, England, France, Japan)
  • Minor colonial civs get a reduced (but not reduced as much as that of the Colonial civs) penalty for number of cities (no reduced penalty for building outside of core area) (Netherlands, Vikings, Germany, Italy, Russia)
  • In 1600 the following changes happen:
    • Lagos jungle changes to forest
    • Port Harcourt jungle changes to forest
    • Colombo jungle changes to forest
    • Gujarat jungle changes to forest
    • Bandar Seri Begawan jungle changes to forest
    • Manila jungle changes to forest
    • Flood Plains spawn around Karachi/ Central Pakistan to allow Karachi to grow
    • Fish spawns around Gujarat, Port Harcourt, Bandar Seri Begawan, Manila
    • Clam spawns around Mumbai

Speed = Marathon

I have been inspired by a number of other story tellers on this forum, but most especially Sisiutil, author of the spectacular tale Princes of the Universe. I will be adopting that style of story telling- this won't be an after-action report, it will be an actual, living, breathing story with characters and the like.

I will be taking some liberties- such as compressing events that take years and decades in the game into hours, days, or weeks (and more rarely, vice versa). I have always felt Civ treats the structure of nations too simplistically- i.e., all of the countries seem to be centralized nations of some sort, while history shows a far wider range of types of civilization. So I may divide up nations, or treat a country as a league of politically disjoint city states, or take other similar liberties.

Without further ado, then...

Prologue

The creaking of oars was all that could be heard. On the deck of the Pallor Astrum eighty soldiers stood bearing the flag of Rome. Forty ships total could be seen on the black waters of the Atlantic. In eerie silence, they slowly sailed away. The Romans had left Britain. Soon their empire would crumble, leaving a radically different world, full of strife, behind.

400 years would pass. The British Isles would pass through anarchy, war, fighting, rebellion, and all manners of intrigue and discord. Those who lived and survived were the rich lords, who hired personal armies of knights and build great fortifications. The serfs toiled relentlessly in exchange for the protection their master offered. But life went on, in the midst of this chaos.

But enough of history, dear reader. It is the year 829 A.D., and we find ourselves in the settlement of Southampton on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean....

How nice to have someone else write a "Sisiutil" style story besides me. Good luck! I'll be excited to read this one!

Ah yes, I lurk on your Destruction of History. Nice story, by the way.

Update sometime in the next 12 hours.

It’s always good to see another RFC story around here.

:D

Vikingstan

A fair gale was blowing in from the east. In the distance, Alfred could spot a fleet of triremes. Their sails bore the standard of the Viking Union.

In the days of his great-great-great grandfather, the Vikings had partaken in many raids upon England. Alfred had never witnessed them himself, but he had heard of them, from his parents and grandparents.
But Alfred's father, Ingen, was half Viking. Combining both elements of his ancestry and forging a union between powerful London families of Viking and English descent, he had managed to unite London under his monarchy, along with most of England. But before he could unite the whole of the British Isles, he met an untimely death, assassinated by Catholic radicals who resisted a pagan king.

After accepting the Catholic faith, Alfred set out on a quest to unite Britain. He had managed to do so, with all of England, Scotland, and Wales under his dominion. His next goal was to conquer Ireland, but that goal would have to wait.

For sailing towards him was a Viking fleet, about to touch land upon English soil were a number of Viking ships.

As the boats docked, a rugged man stepped off-board. In the Viking tradition he sported a thick beard.

He approached Alfred, who was seated on horseback. As he spoke, a translator converted the message into English.

"Good day, Alfred, King of Brittania. I bid you welcome from Grundi, King of the Vikings. Now let us speak in privacy, for I bring important tidings."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"BY ORDER OF GRUNDI, HIGH KING OF THE ISLAMIC VIKING UNION

I, KIND GRUNDI, HEREBY ADVISE THAT THE KINGDOM OF BRITAIN, ITS KING ALFRED THE BOLD, AND ALL HER INHABITANTS CONVERT TO ISLAM, AT PAIN OF DEATH.
"

Alfred and the Viking diplomat were seated in his private study, around a table decked with stuffed pig and wine. As the diplomat read his proclamation, and his translator conveyed the message to the English king, Alfred nearly choked.

"I'm sorry, WHAT? What, pray tell, is Islam? And why in the Lord's name does he want us to suddenly adopt it?"

The diplomat sighed. "You know, they call him "Grundi the Mad King" back at home. Last year he returned from a trip to the Holy Land and he's never been quite the same. He keeps raving of some deity named "Allah" that he claims they worship in the Levant. The majority of us at home are still pagan, although in public we have to pretend to believe in this "Islam" as he calls it. Personally I think he lost his mind and made the whole religion up. It's only a matter of time before one of the nobles overthrows him and reestablishes paganism-or perhaps your faith, Catholicism. Oh, and by the way, Grundi's probably not serious about the "at pain of death part." He's sent this proclamation to almost every European nation, without declaring war on one of them."

"Very well. You can tell Grundi I politely rejected his kind offer."

I love stories such as these, especially when they're well written.

Following with interest!

Thanks guys! Readers are the life blood of the writer.

Hopefully I can live up to your expectations.

Islamic Vikings! That is very uncommon

I've noticed them a disturbing number of times in my game. The problem with Civ in general is that it doesn't account for distance when spreading religion overseas (or I don't believe it does). So the problem arises from the fact that the Vikings are the first medieval euro civ to spawn, so there's no other civs there to spread them Christianity- which is historically accurate because the Vikings were pagan for a while. But in the event that the Vikings make contact with Arabia before Christianity spreads there's a good chance they get Islam in at least one city (but usually not more than one). And naturally, because the AI is dumb and jumps to convert to the first religion it gets, the Vikings end up Islam. In any event, the plan is to send a few Catholic missionaries their way- that should fix up things.

I may be using Worldbuilder to act as an Inquisition type thing, eliminating religions that really are highly ahistorical.

Guys I'm starting the story over, so the previous parts of the story will be edited for the new one.

EDIT: I'm using a different modmod too, see Author's note.
