RFC "Training" SG?

would somebody want to start? If not, I can, but I need to know how many turns to play.

What is the current standard for SG play? (Don't make us all look bad AnotherPacifist, just kidding)

10 turns, and please make note of an RFC things, and perhaps explain some mechanics like flipping (not amazingly in depth though :P).

I don't think we can capture Byzantium (also, if my eyes do not decieve me, is the Great Library in our to be capital???) unless we declare on turn 1 . If the cultural borders expand to fill the space created for us as I assume they will, then our army would be catapulted into some unsettled territory (Africa? Siberia?)- but if we do declare, then I am not sure if the Greek city would flip to us.

See what I mean about needing to learn RFC?

Don't worry, the new patch solves the "flipping units across continents" issue. At least for the AI.

I'll take a run at it for 10 turns.

i was thrown across the black sea, my first Turk game

I played 3 turns from the save. I sent the 3 horse archers attacking (and declaring war on Greece) on Turn 1. The first died fighting the longbow. The second withdrew agains the cannon. The third killed the longbow. On Turn 2, no new Greek reinforcements in Byzantion and it was a simple victory over the already wounded cannon.

Yes, the Great Library is in Byzantion.

but if we do declare, then I am not sure if the Greek city would flip to us.

Declarations of war may affect how many troops you get when starting out, but they don't affect which cities will flip 3 turns after your spawn event.

Arabia will declare war on us on Turn 3. We get flip a couple of camel archers in the dodgy little Black Sea city, which need to get down to Sur quickly to defend as Sur only gets a Pike and a Catapult and workers when it flips.

Sorry, I played 2 more turns because I just had to see the end of Alexander's empire...:p

1. 1280 Declared war on Greece (lots of good cities with production and wonders--need them first before Arabia). Switch civics to HR, slavery, bureaucracy, OR.
2. 1290 Captured Istanbul (becomes our capital) at the loss of 1 horse archer.
3. 1300 Flipped Sur, Tushpa, Hattusas, and the northern Black Sea city (sorry, forgot its name). So we got our 3 Black Sea cities (but we need to be able to hold them against Germany and Russia). Switch to Christianity for the hammers. Open borders with Persia and peace treaty.
4. 1310 Met France, gave 10 (became pleased), asked for 40 and peace treaty. Open borders.
5. 1320 Open borders with Russia after a mutual exchange of 10 bucks. (Russia should be our friend against Germany). Captured Epidamnos (becomes Dirac) with loss of 1 cannon, 1 crossbowman. Sent a settler between Dirac and Germany to preempt them on future oil in that area.
6. 1330 Open borders with Rome and Germany with peace treaties. Tushpa gets Christianity.
7. 1340 Open borders with England, Vikings, Netherlands, Mongolia, Portugal. Exchange Divine Right (unfortunately somebody built the Spiral Minaret already) to England for literature, compass, 20 gold and world map.
8. 1350 Switch research to paper (we were doing military science before)--3 turns to go because Istanbul has the Great Library and multiple settled scientists! Liberalism has not be discovered yet...
9. 1360 Uneventful
10.1370 Paper is done, switch to printing press (eventually need to build Taj Mahal). Settled great general in Hattusas (producing troops every 3-4 moves) after killing multiple troops in Athens.
11. 1380 Atina captured. So we have 4 cities in Greece. And of course we make peace with Greece who gives us drama...why you might ask?
12. 1390 ...because Greece collapses. Unfortunately Tyras becomes Tiraspol under the Russians. So we preempt them and found a city on the horse 2 blocks away and build lots of culture to flip that city.

Future directions:
1. Vassalize Arabia (they have no production since Persia is alive and takes most of Ninua's production away)
2. 2 turns from Great Scientist--need to bulb Education and switch to liberalism after printing press is done.
3. Build more troops from Hattusas, Atina and Dirac while Istanbul builds library, market, etc. We are 5 turns from going down from 100% science to 60%, so Istanbul needs to build money and research quickly while we prepare for all out assault on Arabia (who's amassing 4-5 troops in Jerusalem).
4. No more wonders for now (we have Great Library, Sistine Chapel, Parthenon--what more can you ask for?)
5. Build an Islamic and Jewish monastery somewhere so that eventually we can switch to free religion for more happiness/science, and maximize our culture with free speech (when our empire becomes large enough, bureaucracy may not be worth it).
6. Set all spy points against Germany to steal some techs in the future (Rome is still alive but unstable, so can't count on them being alive). Build a spy sometime and settle near Austria.

wow, lots of Wonders! good turn set, seems pretty simple with a super strong Greece. Any thoughts on future vassals? Mali and....?

My guess is Portugal and Arabia. Portugal because Spain declared war on it (or vice versa) I think we're too late for the conquerors because Vikings, Rome and probably England already have optics. I would rather gun for liberalism/constitution for now. (Doesn't prevent Inca or Aztecs from asking us to be their masters in the future...especially if we declare war on Spain)
Khmer's a Chinese vassal so not for now, we just need to win more wars to show them our power...:sniper::ar15::strength:

Looking good mate:strength:

How could we get Portugal as our vassal? IIRC they'll only have Lisboa and Ponta Delgada, and they always seem to collapse. WIll they ask after Spain takes Lisboa out of our sheer empire size?

Portugal often offer to vassalize if they are "threatened" by another civ, usually Spain. They don't have to actually be under attack as such AFAIK. If Portugal is way behind in the tech race, this is usually when they come looking for another nation to protect them.

Quotey, are you going to play now?

no worries, good luck playing...

Hm. Tanis, a city in Egypt that went from Greece to Rome wants to join us. I am pretty sure we could take Nwt-Rst (mids) from it... should I accept the flip and go after Niwt-Rst? It looks a good city, but how bad would 2 African cities be to our stability?

I think our stability will survive 2 african cities. Our (future) vassals will give us stability

I would take it. It's a good flanking position to take Mekkah early if you build a fort in Sinai. And once you take Niwt-Rst (making sure our stability is good so that Egypt doesn't spawn, and even if it does spawn it'll usually vassalize to us), it's a good production site.

Plus Egypt does not give us any stability if we occupy it (see the settler bmp--any color other than gray or white is OK).

So Portugal wants to vassalize to us... I assume war with Spain is worth it?

e: But is war with GERMANY worth it? I think not...

But I didn't know he was at war with Grmany when I took it. So I guess I'll have to stick with it...

I . .. .. .. .ed the turn numbering up somewhere and might only have played 9 turns. No matter though.

Turn 0 (231)

Tiraspol is defended by a galley and we have a Knight in reach.... It's very tempting, but I assume taking over Russia would murder our stability, and I have warred against Russia in RFC Rand.... General Winter is the worst thing to deal with ever.

I pull foritifed troops out of our cities and send them in Arabia's direction.

Turn 1 (232)

China demands our WM and I give in.

Tanis revolts and I take the people into the Empire.

Turn 2 (233)

Bulb Edu with outr scientist and it completes?? What kind of jiggery-pokery is this? Did Whye reduce the cost of Education?

Turn 3 (234)

Capture Luksor (Niwt-Rst) which also has th Leaning Tower and the Temple of Artemis!

Turn 4 (235)

Buto is captured by Rome- this will likely flip to us. The Ottoman UP is wonderful...

We also get the Holy Mountain quest, which is rubbish.

Turn 5 (236)

The Khmer (FURIOUS with us due to religion- Rhye did a good job with this) demands Feudalism. No!

Also, the title "Tributary Khmer State" is a little funny and the Dynamic Civs Names is real nice.

Turn 6 (237)

Portugal wishes to vassalise to us...

I take it and we are at war with Spain AND Germany. Yikes.

But zounds! A glimmer of hope! The AAP votes to stop the war againts Portugal.

Also, look at this:

Portugal must be paying through the nose for all those mercs in Porta Delgada....

Turn 7 (237)

Uhhh... the AP vote doesn't turn up.... what?

Lisboa is captured and the graphic on the tile show it was razed...

PP finishes, research to Philosophy.

Turn 8 (238)

Jesus. Ethiopia declares war and may take Niwt-Rst if it coughs up a real stack, and Rome collapses.

Turn 9 (239)

Germany approaches Yergogu with 2 cannon and a mace... whip a Jan in there, move the garrison of nearby Dirac to the city.

Turn 10 (241)

Germany retreats.

A great Engineer is born. Not sure what to do with him to left him unmoved.

These were stressful turns. But fun :D

If every Ottoman game is like this I could see myself enjoying RFC a lot!
