RFC "Training" SG?

Seriously, I would not take Portugal up on vassalization. Lisboa captured means that it'll soon collapse, and we've just stirred up Germany too soon before we're really ready.

Save the GE for the Taj Mahal.

True without lisboa I have never seen portugal to survive so expect the worst.:(
And yeah thoose 10 turns sounded painfully exciting:lol:

I never knew Lisboa was going to be captured :(

Usually AI-AI wars are stalemates, but I guess Spain has a lot of extra troops by the time Portugal spawns.

Also, in my asking what kind of jiggery-pokery caused Edu to complete with a single bulb: I heard that tech costs increase with empire size. What kind of sized empire do you have to have to get Edu expensive enough to match the normal game?

I've been playing on Emperor for all my recent games of RFC so I can't actually recall the answer to this question.

I think the Portuguese Vassal situation is a moot point now...

As a side note, i have seen Portugal survive (for a long time, they actually became a small power) without Lisbon. But that was a few versions ago...

lurker's comment: Tech costs don't start increasing until you get your 11th city. You could bulb Education with a single GS because later civs have relatively low tech costs. I've done the same thing with England and Germany too many times to count.

OK, here we go!

Turn 0: 1450AD
Looking around we aren't in too bad shape. 40% science though is bad, will need to lift this soon. Military is generally OK.

I made peace with Spain straight away. We don't need extra war anger with a nation that we have no actual contact with or possible hope of attacking any time soon, now that Lisbon is gone. They give us their World Map as part of the peace settlement terms. Doesn't have quite the value of Lisbon, but is something nonetheless.

Made some build changes in several cities.
Istanbul and Dirac both have 2 unhappy citizens yet no Christian Temples. Immediately switched to building Temples and whipped in both cities. No more unhappy faces and this will give us more hammers also.
Yerrogu is building a Janissary but doesn't currently have a Barracks. Whipped the Baracks.
Kilia has no production to speak of (using mostly coastal tiles) and is building a Theatre. Switched to Monastery and whipped, will go back to the Theatre afterwards.
Luksor is building military, but also doesn't have a Barracks. Whipped a Baracks before returning to the Longbow.

We could trade Printing Press to Netherlands for Banking, but will try to trade Philosophy after we research it (immediately) instead as this is a lesser value tech. If we are especially nice to Netherlands though, they may vassalize to us eventually - if Germany is going to be a long-term enemy of ours (and hopefully theirs).

More Turn 0 actions:

Moved the Knight in Attina up to Yerrogu. Switch to build a Galley in Attina before the Knight finished so that we can improve the Wine on Crete.

Promote the Longbow in Luksor to city defense I and fortify.

EDIT: Crash to Desktop issues occuring for me. Seem to have been resolved now though.

I agree, in general if you have the AP religion, spread it like butter and build monasteries before you get anything else done, and the longer you have them before Scientific method, the better. Better use of OR is building missionaries without the monastery. In fact, that is why Hattusas built nothing but missionaries for my turns in addition to a Christian monastery.

Turn 1: 1460

Did a lot of trading.
Horse to Khmer for Banana, Spices and Sugar
Wine to China for Silk
Horse to China for Pig + 7 GPT
Clam to Russia for 3 GPT
Fish to Persia for Cotton

Netherlands doesn't value Philosophy > Banking, so had to trade Printing Press for Banking, 20G and their World Map. They became Pleased, so also asked them for 1GPT which they agreed to.

Traded Aesthetics to Russia for 50G and demanded 50G from Khmer (who were already Furious with us, so -1 more isn't critical).

Killed two German cannons for the loss of one Janissary (unpromoted).
Hamman will be completed in Istanbul this turn (but why was it being built?). Then can start building much needed economic buildings. Hattusas builds a Library (in 1 turn).

Turn 2: 1465

Made Peace with Germany, netting 65G from them also. Don't want a two front war in the short-mid term either. Focus should be on Arabia next. Transfer excess military units towards Arabia.

Move science back to 50%. Now have 239 Gold and +4GPT economy. Still can improve this though with a bit more infrastructure.

Turn 3: 1470

Traded for Music from France.
Many more trades for resources and GPT, economy now back to 60% science. Liberalism in 4 more turns. Still saving GE for Taj Mahal.

Use Galley to transfer some troops into Egyptian cities, and hopefully enter Ethiopia and get some peace terms with them. They are pretty backward and Knights and Cannons should scare them into a peace settlement. Then can focus on Arabia.

Build some much needed courthouses and start on a Jewish Monastery in Sur. This will be needed when we eventually adopt Free Religion to increase happiness.

Start to build 3 Christian Missionaries in Hattusas to spread Christianity to those of our cities which don't currently have it. Will look to move away from Organized Religion after this (probably to Pacifism).

Lisboa wasn't razed. It was conquered by Spain. Portugal is pretty useless as a vassal, but is currently stable.

Turn 5: 1475
Build an Islamic Monastery in Hattusas, for the same reason as the Jewish Monastery in Sur.

Turn 6: 1480
Netherlands vassalize to China. :(

Get a Great Prophet in Luxor. All shrines have been built except for the Church of Nativity! Christian Holy City is Pompeii. This should be captured from the independents and we should build the Church of the Nativity there.

Increase science slider to 70% to shave one turn off Liberalism. Stability is now Solid after building a few courthouses and making some peace. Begin pillaging some Ethiopian cottages. Upgrade Trebuchets in Sur to Cannons in preparation for the assault on Arabia.

Turn 7: 1485
Discover Liberalism. Choose Constitution as free tech. Switch to Representation and Mercantilism (1 turn of anarchy).

Ethiopia invades with 2x War elephants, 1x Catapult and 1x Trebuchet. Our Egyptian units are 2x Knights, 2x Longbows, 1x Janissary and 1x Pikeman. Should be OK.

Turn 8: 1490
Rush Taj Mahal in Diraq, will complete next turn. Would like to increase culture from this city to flip Pompeii and gain the Christian Holy City.

Science slider back to 50% to get our economy out of deficit, but research rate is still 5 turns for Economics now that we have all those specialists working for us. Once we capture a few holy cities (Jerusalem, Mecca and Pompeii), we should be able to turn up the science slider a bit more again. Our upcoming Golden Age will also help (obviously!).

Kill a couple of Ethiopian units and they sue for peace (+60 Gold and +2 GPT). Arabia is the focus, not Ethiopia. Open Borders with Ethiopia immediately. They may be a good choice for a civ to vassalize, as they have quite a number of cities down the coast of Africa already.

Turn 9: 1495AD - Turn 1 of Golden Age

Complete Taj Mahal and enter a Turkish Golden Age. This always triggers an AI declaration of war, this time from England. This loses us 5GPT from a trade deal but otherwise is not going to affect us in any way. Portugal may lose a few fishing nets perhaps.

Use Galley to ship the workers off Crete and down to Egypt, where we have some resources that aren't hooked up currently (Wheat and Stone). Heal our injured units following their battle with Ethiopian units around Luxor, in preparation for our upcoming assault on Jerusalem and Mecca.

Put science slider back to 60% again, we are still in the black with our economy due to the GA.

Turn 10: 1500AD - Turn 2 of Golden Age
The Venerable Bede informs us that we are the most cultured civ in the world, ahead of China in 2nd place.

Not much action to speak of. Reposition a few final troops around Jerusalem ready to Declare War and attack on our next turn.

Germany offers us a Defensive Pact, which I accept. About 6-7 turns ago, Russia was manouvering troops along our border ready to declare war on us I thought. I demanded 1 GPT from them at the time (which meant that they couldn't attack us for 10 turns), but I think they may try again soon. Having a strong friend in Germany on our side is surely a good thing. Germany are the biggest Euro in score (after us). We may only have a few more turns of peace with Russia to go.

France is prepared to trade us Optics, but the price is currently too high (asking for either Education or Printing Press). Would be better to trade Optics from Ethiopia, once our relationship continues to improve a little more with them. France is currently the tech leader I think, or at least equal with Vikings.

Future Objectives
1. Declare war on Arabia. We have a sizeable force ready to invade on our next turn. Capture Jerusalem and Mecca and hopefully Arabia will then Capitulate to us. We may need to liberate Mecca to Arabia after capitulation to keep them stable enough so that they survive until our UHV deadline in the late 1800s. They are currently Unstable already.

2. Continue to build more infrastructure such as Banks, Jails, Courthouses, Markets and Grocers and Universities during our Golden Age. Keep Organised Religion until we have quite a bit more infrastructure in place.

3. Either flip or capture Pompeii. Build Church of the Nativity there for another big economic boost.

4. Eventually change to Free Religion. Spread Judaism and Islam from Sur/Hattusas to each of our cities for extra happiness.

5. Research Nationalism ASAP.

6. Probably don't capture Buto. It isn't really a very good city, and will take us past 11 cities which will begin to slow our research rate. If it flips to us, fine but probably don't conquer it at this stage. It won't add much value to our empire.

I'm pretty happy with the state of the Turkish Empire at 1500AD. Our economy has been rebuilt, we have much more infrastructure in our cities, our military is ready to be unleashed on Arabia and we are in the early stages of our first Golden Age.

Nice turn set blizzrd. I especially like the touch building the Taj Mahal in Dirac. Be careful with Germany though, I've seen them declare war after cancelling a defensive pact. Ninua should be captured 2nd after Jerusalem since it will net us a great production city.

A great trick to survive the downturn in economy after a golden age is to build science/stability/religion buildings in the first half (i.e. jails, monasteries, courthouses, libraries) and then start building the markets/grocers/banks to time them to finish 1-2 turns after the end of the golden age. By doing so you buffer the economy slightly, sometimes enough to prevent going down a full stability level (4-8 economy points).

Who is up next? Quotey posted that Thadian was to follow my turns, but Thadian hasn't posted in this thread since the first page.

Im always ready to take a spot if some1 does not come:mischief:

Fantastic and descriptive set, blzzrd!

We'll skip thadian, waiting for him to reconfirm. If he doesn't before Mowque posts, we'll just skip him and see what happens.

sorry guys.....i won't seem to be able to play. Looks like your doing good, though. I'll be pretty much Civ4 free for 3 weeks!! no....

It seems thadian isn't playing. (I just sent him a private message) Maax, why don't you play next? I'll take it up after you vassalize the Arabians. (I like building and turtling more)
