RFCE 1.3 Playtest Feedback

So updated graphics drivers didn't prevent the Dutch game from crashing at 996AD on my Win 8.1 comp, and the game also crashed at 1050AD on my old Core 2 Duo running 32 bit Vista SP2. Which does imply it's something with the mod rather than the system.

Yeah, the computer I do most of my modding is windows 8.1 with 64 bit as well
But since Civ IV isn't the newest game, and wasn't really coded too well memory handling wise (just think of all the MAFs), it can't really use most advantages of 64 bit systems, as far as I know.

This seems to help a bit.

When I coded the UHV helpers, I loaded a game of every civ without any CTD. Neither my recent game got me any. The only ones I got were from savegames of others. Maybe I'm just very lucky.

Yeah, it's clearly connected to memory issues, so it's not luck at all
There is a good chance that various ways of increasing memory would help a lot
Nevertheless I'm very determined to solve this issue for good
It's highly likely that some hidden, very old coding inconsistencies (probably some uninitialized or wrongly initialized pointers, or null pointers) are the cause of the memory overflows (or wrong memory accesses) which result in those CTDs. And the recently changed things - additional art, new pak files, etc. - are just making it much more likely to happen.
Actually I hope that fixing it will result in a significant speed improvement as well.

Neither the 64 bit patch nor loading the mod on RAM disk made any difference for me. CTD at 984AD after the patch, and 1086AD on RAMdisk

Absinthe is there anything else we players can do to help track the underlying issue down?

I saw that someone mentioned making for Prussia Northern Germany and parts of Northen Poland outer/contested not foreign in xx year. I support this idea, Prussia's core is small for me atleast and the zones u can conquer are limited. Also stability is bad if u overextended a bit before starting the 2city from each civ HV. Yeah u can conquer and gift back the cities - move to the other 2 but i suppose that extending the core of prussia and making them have more not unstable zones will benifit them in the long run. Also its boring to turtle for nearly 400-500 years with 4-5 cities and just build units/GP for the uhvs :D

I am saying this cuz in my last prussia game i had like 10 stability from having parts of northern poland, branderburg province(Berlin to be exact), Wilno and Minsk from lithuania and the rest was the usual prussian cities. Every one of them had manor/corthouse/nightwatch/castle/only protestantism and none unhappy cities + imperialism as civic. Its hard to start getting the UHV done with this stability

Do you still have cities in the Baltic? If so, you should consider releasing them to boost your stability. IIRC, Estonia becomes foreign and Livonia becomes border, which can really hurt your stability if you try to hold those.

I also think currently Brandenburg becomes historical at some point, but it probably should become core, if possible (Prussia's capital historically becomes Berlin by the time it gets elevated to Kingdom status). An extra core territory would help with stability needed for the 2nd UHV.

For Prussia: Estonia switches to foreign, Livonia and Greater Poland to border/contested, Silesia to potential, Brandenburg to historical in 1618
There isn't too much difference in stability boost between core and historic provinces
On the other hand there is a big penalty if you don't own every city in your core provinces
Thus it's better for Prussia if Brandenburg is only historic, not core

I'm currently on an Aragon game on SVN 1146, have yet to encounter a CTD. I'll try to finish it soon so i can provide feedback (all i have left is to conquer Athens, Sardinia, Corsica, and Provence, then wait it out till 1478).

Till the CTD is solved, I advise you to play with revision 1148 or before
Crashes were way less common

Can we add some Atlantic access near Ireland or north sea? As Swedish, I had to conquer Plymouth.

Well it did appear. But as hardcore player, we should conquer Plymouth / Lisbon / Bordeaux / La Coruna first, build all colonial projects and let no one else get colonial trade route.

Hanseatic League should be nerfed. As Danish or Swedish, you'll see what it feels when you get +10-20 food per city.

As said before, the whole corporation system will be replaced with the company system like SoI and DoC.

You'd need to get Teutoan, Ishbiliya, Amsterdam and the one in the Irish sea as well.
Or do what I did as Portugal, get chemistry and build a massive fleet of privateers then pirate every colonial trade route. Not only did it stop anyone building any other projects, the loot also funded 100% research right the way to the UHV date.

General strategy : build Westminister Abbey (prepare for printing press - free religion) , research public works and astronomy, bulb trading companies. Privateer rules the sea after chemistry.
