as a builder-style player, i'd say oligarchic republic is one of the bigger disappointments in the mod. the improvement over despotism is hardly noticeable - some cities produce more shields or growth, because of removing the limitations on production per square, but the higher unit upkeep costs are not offset by the meagre improvement to corruption.

and with no decent builder government alternative until democracy, it's a real hit to the builder-type player.

in fairness, the documentation is very clear that one must fight for territory, particularly early. however, it does pose a "style" issue for players with a builder preference.

Hi folks!

Rhye, thanks again for the goody huts setting tip - now I understand...

I just want to report on the the standard map version of RoCX,
CLASHING OF EMPIRERS
has reached BETA v3,
with properly working unit upgradement and enhanced UUs
and with exciting ancient wars!
:)

Can be checked out in the thread in Completed Modpacks...

JPJ, check if you've got the folder "settler" inside ...\Civilization III\art\units\
you said you've got the English/US version and it isn't civ3gold or complete.
In case the answers are affermative, try to download the 160MB installer

The three folders containing "art" I have are in the "scenarios" section, not specifically in the folder you noted (above). That folder still has only the standard units. ???

Also, setting out here in the Pennsylvania mountains, we're still on copper landlines and DSL is not offered, so a 22+ hour download of the 160MB installer is not an option.

Announcement for the elite players of RoX:
tired of dominating? Game too easy?

The multiplayer version awaits you! Choose an European civ and let's see if you can fool other human players :D

as you can see, the map is small (80x108) and it's more or less, a cut of the standard one. 8 players, with a selection from 11 european civs. Middle eastern, african and american civs are replaced with strong barbs. In Europe instead nothing was changed. This means that you can play and find everything in the place you would have found in single player mode.

The more want to join, better it is (so no slot is given to the AI). And of course, I want to be one of the eight, well just for watching you kill each other.

So, have got a free evening? I'm anxious to see who's stronger between strategy guide writers (EW, TC, Soma) and experienced players (Aeon, Blas) and who knows, anybody wants to join. I remember Horton and Iztvan were very strong. If we don't find enough people I'll try to call them after we've decided the date.

BTW the map is complete, but I have a doubt. Right now it is 8 civs out of 11. It means that the choice is yours, but 3 civs won't play. For example, in case it is Germany+Austria+Rome you'll have a huge hole in central europe to be filled by others.
The alternative is replacing 3 civs with barbarians (Holland, Portugal and another one (Scandinavia?). That way the problem is solved, but you'll no longer have the choice of those civs. If some of you wanted Portugal because of the carrack, in that way he can't. What do you think?

Excellent! I would love to play this with you all, but I can not if it is online. My internet connection is horrible and sporadic - centralized rules + no enforcement = literally 40-50 wireless routers within 200 m. They are polluting every channel and half have the same SSID and many have the same SSID as our supposedly official wlan/internet network. With patience, I can browse, but not download or use any sort of messenger-service...

I will definitely play this a lot on LAN's. Thanks, Rhye!

Besides, who would dare to attack Rhye and his lieutenants?

I believe, that you should let the players choose between the 11 civs. That way, there is room for variation, and you can choose if you want e.g. Spain or Portugal. Also, an unexperienced player can be England - or if all players are experienced, England could be left out.
Have you uploaded the BIQ?

If you want only 8 civs, I would suggest removing England, Holland, and Portugal. But with 11 civs, at least in LAN games, the choosing of civs would be something players will agree upon, on a game to game basis.

slowly we aregetting near 6000 posts...

I would love to play on the net, even though I have no wxperience of it...
BUT
I have no internet at home...

BUT (again) maybe I will have, form next month, so in about three weeks? :)...

There is a timezone problem... I'm on GMT+2, so I'm free on sundays, wednsdays, and thursdays GMT 14:00-21:00. On mondays I usually get on a bit later, and on tuesdays I only get on at around GMT 17:00. On fri-sat I'm free pretty much GMT 9:00-22:00.
If we could manage to work it out so we're all online for a few hours to play this, I'd love to join, but I think there are a few possible players here who live far to the west and to the east, so it may be hard to get 8 players together for a few hours straight.

I cannot play non-PBEM internet games (firewall issues...)

but if it ever turns into a PBEM count me in!

I suppose there is no way I could fool you guys into letting me play England? ;p

I've been playing a new game as Egypt (boy do they get no production), and I noticed that there is no wine in north africa. I seem to recall that the Egyptians had wine not long after the babylonians (prior to europe). Why is wine limited to europe only?

Try doing a search for the "Settler"-folder in your Civilization III folder (include sub-folders in your search path), and let us know which folders it finds where.

Rhye, which starting units have you chosen for the MP-map?
