Riots in St. Louis

So neighborhood small business owners are now the evil capitalists you want to wage holy commie war against? Okay, good to know. When did you move to crazytown?

No, I just don't care if their property gets damaged in the process of oppressed peoples fighting against their oppressor.

Although you might consider the fact that "neighborhood small business owners" are among the wealthiest and most powerful people in society, even the corner shop owner.

Most of a city budget is property tax. A property tax strike is doable. If enough of the city's population is willing to go along with it.

I dunno about Missouri, but in California that again is a state process of collection and distribution...and the state will calmly take you down for nonpayment without even pausing to hear you say it is over a dispute with the city. The state probably wouldn't even mention this property tax strike to the city. I'm pretty sure the city funding is based on property tax due rather than collected, as the collecting is the state's job and the city can't be defunded over what would in fact be a failure on the state's part.

Cutlass, in Missouri where this occured, property tax is the primary educational funding tax. Most property taxes are allocated to the school district in which the person lives.

And hey, I am not trying to justify what happened here, or for that matter decry it as the report of what happened hasn't come out yet. I just cannot abide the "all cops are bastards" crap. Sure, a lot are. But a lot are not.

@Cheezy: How are they they oppressor here? They lived and worked and owned businesses in the very neighborhood. They didn't shoot anyone.

No, they aren't directly involved. I'm not saying they should be deliberately targeted, I'm just saying that I don't find their sufferance regrettable. The police exist to protect the capitalist state, and protect above all private property. That means they're on the side of the business owners against everyone else.

I wasn't the one saying 'all cops are bastards'. I also am not the one using 'they are out there with their life on the line' to excuse their behavior. Which is not to say that was your intent, but that is the intent for the vast majority of cases where that is said.

So, interesting bit of math.

From the chart you provided, total officer deaths in 2011; 171, and that includes two who were hit by a train, among other things.

From this chart, total law enforcement officers employed in 2011; 1,001,984.

Fatality rate, 0.017%.

The on the job fatality rate among garbage collectors runs more than twice as high at 0.036%, and they make a lot less money and hardly ever shoot their customers, so go thank your garbageman...but spare me the 'lives on the line for us all' bit, please.

"reports indicate" without sources is suspicious at best. It's like when reporters lie with phrases like "people say" and so forth.

Er, I didn't actually say either of those things. I said "reporters lie" but I didn't say the media was lying about -this-. I simply pointed out that you made a claim without sources.

It's crazy how militarised these police are.

Are we sure this isn't Baghdad circa 2005? Jesus Christ...

If there's one thing we've learned from past protests it's that if they're going after journalists it's because they're planning something nasty for the following day.

Police Officers work in area's every day that you avoid, or, if by chance you end up in, you lock your doors and try and get the hell out of there as fast as possible. Nobody on here can seriously say they have never been in a bad neighborhood that you felt uncomfortable in. Or, if you "havent" been in one, there are neighborhoods you know you dont go in.

Too much distrust from the two sides. Very much a me vs them attitude. How do you correct that? There are million news stories that come out with nothing but criticism but no suggestions.

Just at a guess that lesson from the past no longer applies and they have to know it. Anything nasty they do will be out on a cell phone video in short order anyway. They either don't do it or they decide they don't care who knows it.

Advice to anyone shooting cell phone video...stream it to a recorder off your person, and when they demand your phone inform them of that fact immediately.

Step one is stop the cops from acting like/kitting out like soldiers in a warzone and murdering people I'd suggest.
