RIP Diegito.

I am so sad rn. He was an idol to me when I was a kido :undecide:

"Maradona has the ball, two mark him, he touches the ball. The genius of world football dashes to the right and leaves the third and is going to pass to Burruchaga. It’s still Maradona! Genius! Genius! Genius! Ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta. Gooooooooooal! Gooooooooooal! I want to cry! Dear God! Long live football! Gooooooooooal! Diegoal! Maradona! It’s enough to make you cry, forgive me. Maradona, in an unforgettable run, in the play of all time. Cosmic kite! What planet are you from? Leaving in your wake so many Englishmen, so that the whole country is a clenched fist shouting for Argentina? Argentina 2, England 0. Diegoal, Diegoal, Diego Armando Maradona. Thank you, God, for football, for Maradona, for these tears, for this, Argentina 2, England 0"

Probably best football player ever, even if Maradona himself used to say it was Mágico González.

Great guy. Didn't watch the 1986 tournament, but remember him crying when they lost to Germany in 1990. RIP.

RIP Diego. Wasn't the best ever IMO, but definitely one of the best.

He was not a good manager or role model after he retired from playing the game.. but the game will never forget him.

Here's a clip of the way he used to play.

Unfortunately the candle was burning from both ends for this guy.

Not my favorite but surely one of the best.

RIP

Nice vid
yeah, not the best of role models
but every kid, everyone, also when you do not understand the whole of football play, can identify with his playstyle and with him... can dream footballing like him
a sinner and as well a saint as a gift from heaven especially for Argentina and Napoli
RIP

Afaik the argument is that (apart from his obvious skills) he was the best because he tented to play in weaker teams with which he defeated the (on paper) stronger side. At times god had a hand in it too.
Not sure who could be considered as better overall, though. Maybe Messi? (like I said, I don't follow football anyway; only time I cared was in 1994 with Hagi, but they went out to a stupid swedish team, after they were exhausted from beating Argentina which still had Maradona and Batistuta).

Best player I have ever seen. I have never seen a more decisive player. He was everything, strong, fast, skilled, smart, combatant, what a player. He was in all rows as well.

I watched him once in San Mames against Athletic club, it should be the late 80s. He was top class, gifted, he was not a sportsman, though.

He was a bar-man. Once while playing in the Cadiz C.F. some journalist asked him why he always was out all night long instead sleeping well to be fresh for next day match, he said it was because jet-lag.
That was after six months he arrived to the city. Longest jet-lag ever. :crazyeye:

How did he cheat?
Earlier in the game which featured the greatest goal ever (video in OP), there was the "Hand of God" incident. Here he beat the goalie Peter Shilton (8 inches taller and allowed to use his hand) to the ball in the air. It is generally acknowledged to have been intentional handball. My feeling is that is sums up Maradona perfectly, a genius with the ball but with questionable wider decision making.

Going from the interview to Lineker, afaik Maradona very deliberately used his hand and then (of course) pretended it was a legitimate goal. He also mentions that he waited to see if the referee and linesman would identify what had happened - a number of players already were aware of it :)
Anyway, he was an amazing player and that action shouldn't matter anymore.

Lineker is not quite impartial source on that matter :)
Unless there is a direct quote by Maradona, that he very deliberately used his hand, which I doubt.
