[R&F] Rise and Fall General Discussion Thread

It's already more than playable, don't pay to much attention to the haters (especially on steam).

Apologies, but I can't take someone totally seriously when using the word "haters" just because they posted a negative review. A lot of the reviews have substance and reasons to back them up. Calling them "haters" has done nothing to convince me that they're wrong.

Wow!!! Blown away by that announcement trailer! Definitely the best one so far, both visually and in terms of the emotion it carries.

As far the actual new features, I’m very intrigued. The new alliance systems makes me happy, as before they were very dull and lacklustre. Limiting the number you can have also makes choosing your alliances more important, instead of being able to spam them like you can currently.

Golden Ages and Dark Ages seem cool as well. Definitely a fan of making the game more dynamic, although I do worry about rubber banding like others have mentioned. Hopefully there will be ways in which a player can avoid Dark Ages if they put the effort and resources into it.

I don’t really understand the “Emergency” system, so I'll have to wait and see on that one. I’m hoping this will be stuff like plagues though, but I might have the wrong idea entirely.

I’m most excited for the new Loyalty system however. Finally, rebelling cities! This is exactly what I wanted! I’m curious how this will tie in with the current Amenity system, or whether it will replace it entirely.

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that are "only" 8 new civs, while Gods and Kings had 9 ? I was actually expecting more civs than the last time, not less ... (unless they make three expansions instead of two, which I'm uncertain).
Well keep in mind we’ve had 1 additional DLC civ so far in comparison to V, so it equals out. Still a little disappointing though, as I’d like VI to end up with more civs than V.

I'm almost drooling over the announcement notes, sounds a very meaty expansion, which promises quite a different game from what there is now and much more lively one. :)

OK this is an (not official just me) announcement but I NEED YOU

You are my eyes, my ears, my well this analogy got weird quick.

I need you to pick through every screenshot, every video, every first look and find that snippet of new info

No secret will remain hidden, For we are the finders of all things Rise and Fall (in like release info only don't get weird guys, we;ve already been there once already this post)

Once you have found it post it in the Features Thread and you too can make my features thread great again (sorry we do not have tradmarked hats and that's probably for the best)

  • New global content: eight new world wonders, seven natural wonders, four new units, two new improvements, two new districts, fourteen new buildings, and three new resources have been added.

It seems that this list does not include Civ Unique units/buildings. They really are adding a lot of new content. 2 new districts especially sound interesting. Maybe something to do with loyalty and espionage? I guess some of these 14 new buildings are buildings for these districts although they can be districts that dont have buildings.

I really hope we will never see Inuit in the game. That would be just TOO ridiculous IMO. I also dont see big need to include Native Americans from North-America. I love the culture and know their history of Native Americans very well, but I dont see big need for them in THIS game. I understand the "what if" aspect of the game, but there are limits to that too. What we need to see from Americas is true great Civilizations like Maya and Inca. Also Mapuche might be nice addition. North-American Native tribes were much smaller and less advanced than Central- and South-American tribes.

What gives me hope is what Anton Strenger said in the press release about adding new leaders:

"People often ask how we select new leaders and civilizations to include in expansions – and we have nine new leaders and eight new civilizations which will be revealed over the coming weeks with Civilization: Rise and Fall. Well, it is a collaborative process that involves the whole team from art and design to production and even our legal department. We also ask ourselves some core questions as we select potential leaders:

  • “Is this region of the world represented?”
  • “Is this time in history represented?”
  • “Is this represented/revered in previous Civilization games or totally new?”"
So, the first question alone gives me hope. South America is only represented by Brazil. And, in reality, the whole continent has only three civilizations. The Inca, I think, will be included and I am excited about that. Crossing fingers.

Total speculation, so be warned: But after reading the description of the new features Firaxis put out, would it be silly to guess we have:

a new governing district, where you earn loyalty and (great) governor points?

Either way, are governors open to everyone (i.e., they work like other great leaders?) or are they specific to your civ (more like national wonders in earlier versions of the game)?

EDIT: Well, the PCGames youtube seems to have answered this, so just ignore.

It is probably a safe bet that some of the new civs will have abilities tailored to the new mechanics. Maybe we will get a civ that gets better loyalty, gets governors faster, or gets bigger bonuses from Golden Ages?
perhaps if Genghis is in the game, anyone at war with him builds (loses?) more points towards getting a dark age, sorta like how gandhi messes ith your war weariness worse than other civs now

I understand the desire for developers to make peaceful play more interesting, but...
1. Culture flipping borders in Civ4 were quite lame. I don't know how Loyalty works, let's it so far it looks like the same passive pressure as culture in Civ4.
2. Dark ages vs. Golden ages may end up being exploited. I foresee high difficulty level gameplay like - soon after beginning of the game you fall into Dark Age since AI is far ahead in techs and units; due to small number of cities you pass through it quite easily; after Dark Age you use opportunity to start Heroic Age and crash everyone. Something like this.
3. Governors could be interesting for Tall vs. Wide, but all this "Yet another game system and resource to manage" can bloat the game.
4. Alliances. Maybe the best part of the expansion as I see it, but will totally depend on AI handling it. As with all AI diplomacy, AI keeping alliances or AI breaking them could be equally immersion-breaking.
5. Emergency situations. Some immersion-friendly way of allying AI against runaway player. Why not.
6. Historic moments. Look good, but from the description all the moments have the same bonuses, which doesn't look that fun. However the phrase "Many grant an even bigger bonus if you’re the “world’s first” civilization to make the achievement" makes me hope there are different rewards for being the first.

When can we expect the announcement of the first leader revealed? And is there usually a pattern for this sort of thing (i.e. after first leader revealed, every third week a new one revealed at roughly same time)

There are 10 weeks and two days until release, so pretty much we will have one leader and civ per week, with a break here and there for the holidays, I am sure. So, next weeks looks good.

Do you think all of the current DLC will be included with the expansion? Can't remember what they normally do and I haven't bought all of the DLC yet.

Not if they want to sell another DLC again ever they won't.

I'm mostly with you on this. I do think the Iroquois deserve the place they have had in Civ games though.

They probably didn't found a way to make the world congress a bit more interesting, than proposing to ban luxuries and want more time to work it out. They will most likely be included in a second expansion.

Will be interesting to see how long a dark age can last, if there's anything you can do to get out of it.
My understanding was that both Dark and golden Ages last for an Era.

Also, there could be videos introducing the new mechanics.

I think the inclusion of General Archive of the Indies may suggest the inclusion of a new Spanish leader focused on exploration.
