[R&F] Rise and Fall General Discussion Thread

I started writing my post before you had posted yours. It had nothing to do with Santa. :p

Personally, if the Sami were added as a civ, lead by Santa, I would play with them anyway. After all, we have Gilgamesh... What can't we have another "mythological" character (and I quote mythological because, despite my 23 years, I wish I still believe in Santa).

The most William Tell can appear for the Swiss civ is to have Rossini be a Great Musician if Switzerland isn't going to be a civ; Geneva is still a city-state in R&F.

Rossini being my world favourite musician ever in the world (it's a shame that he's not in the GM pool), I would appreciate that anyway, even if William Tell is not my favourite opera from him.

That's why I suggested Santa to lead the Sami in the first place. Santa is much more recognizable to the average Civ fan than Lars Levi Laestadius, despite Santa's mythological status (he is quite divorced from St. Nicholas, his real life counterpart).

Firaxis wasted a perfect opportunity to add Rossini.

Though the portrayal of Gilgamesh is based mostly on the mythology around him, he did really exist...

The difficult part would be finding a good Sami leader. The mod for V had to make someone up, and I really doubt Firaxis would go the same route. The best (pre-modern) candidate I can think of would be Lars Levi Laestadius, and that's far from a perfect option. Medieval Norse sources speak of Sami "kings" (probably chieftains), but AFAIK no names are known.

Yeah, he would be a bad candidate, as he was ethnically Swedish, and was responsible for christening a lot of people, thus removing a lot of the old sami culture.

The sami have never been unified as a national group, and have been nomadic and extremely family oriented. They could be a wide civilization in Civ 6 with small cities, and have a different kind of leader, maybe more like a spokesperson, or a group of heads of families. It could make for an interestingly different civ.

Yes, Virginia, there IS a Shakala.
Behold!

From Firaxis comes a brand new app! Firaxis Tracks Shakala! It's much better than the Santa-tracking apps.

You see, Shakala rides a levitating gazelle bringing all sorts of fun gifts to everyone, young and old.

Gifts like death and blood, and more death!

Well, if we're talking about Santa and Shakala,I believe we are at a desperate point where we need a leak or someone finding something new and exciting in the videos we already have to talk about.:mischief:

I was wondering if the India lua would be increased loyalty from cities connected by roads... now that its not, I feel the odds of getting a couple of civs with loyalty modifiers has increased.

However, as some have pointed out, its possible vanilla civs will get a relook. Also, loyalty dlcs might be in the pipe.

Seeing how similar india and persia luas are... that really disrupts any attempt to predict future luas, and thus civs that might use them. At this point, any ua is fair game. Civ predictions are probably best based on market size, and open tsl areas, and for some reason the two values don't seem to stack.

Freshness and player expectations also appear to be considerations, and obviously these two factors can have conflict as well.

I still don't feel Zulu returning yet, mainly because I don't think the devs would have as much fun with their design. Plus we now have two major war civs already.

I could see Carthage returning, or the Phoenicians, and Portugal. But, in an effort to be clever (refering to myself, not the devs), I'm going to lean towards the Minoans as a stand-in for the Phoenicians, based on the 'devs like to have fun' theory.

edit: but if im laying money down, my bet is carthage, ottomans, portugal, canada... and georgia. Or is that too many?

We are still in search for more leaks.

But hey, Shakala is still fascinating in her own right.

It could be, but I don't think Firaxis will ever consider her as a leader contender. :D However, it was fun to see Santa as one in a Mod two days ago. I couldn't believe it, but it seems to be very well done.

Meanwhile, on another topic, I have never seen such activity in the Mac Steam Thread and it is becoming more vicious. There will be blood soon if Aspyr doesn't show more transparency. I am worried about the timeline for R&F release for Mac/Linux. It doesn't help that they released the game on iOS because it shows that they would rather place resources on such porting instead of focusing completely on fulfilling their end of the bargain for us. I truly distrust the relationship Aspyr and Firaxis have, more because it is just no clear how they work together and where the problem is. Regardless, I am not hopeful at all that we will get R&F in the 2-3 week time frame they used to abide by or profess. Something is truly not right and I can't put my finger on it. There is speculation about the uncooperative nature of Firaxis. Then there was the issues with the new MacOS update (Civ V with both expansions doesn't work still and no clear fix date either). I am disappointed, but at least we have about five weeks for fun and daring speculation along with FL and other goodies. That cheers me up. So, the Cree better be good and fun and bring something fresh to the whole game.

If the Crees are really the next FL, it will be compulsory fresh. It's a civilization which have never been present in any civ game, so it'll be a fresh start (alt leader for India, Netherlands, Korea and Mongols are old civs, and we knew approximatively what they will do).
Come on, what can the Crees could do? People talk a lot about forest and plains, and I read somewhere that the alphabet and alphabetism in Crees was really important, so something about libraries or great work of writing? There is so much to speculate that my head will explode ^^

They were big traders. They positioned themselves as middle-men between the Europeans and the other Native American tribes. They created an alliance called the Iron Confederacy to keep their rivals in check. So a bonus for the new alliance system stands to reason. We know a little about their unique improvement from the translated screenshot video thumbnail. It provides food and production relative to adjacent resources. The LUA depends on the leader. Poundmaker or Big Bear would be more diplomatic. Piapot would be expansive and confrontational.

I was the first to bring up the Cree writing system in this thread.

It's very fascinating and is unlike any others.

Another thing I didn't know about them (I accuse a tremendous lack of knowledge about North American tribes, not really my cup of tea...), but, as always, if Crees are really in R&F, it'd be a new occasion to learn about them.
And all you said promise a great civ to play (and, I hope, not as unidimensional as the four FL we had the chance to saw).

I didn't remember it was you! Thanks sir to enlarge my knowledge! As a fan of writing an different alphabet, I learned a lot and it's always a pleasure.

I'm so hyped, knowing that it's the best way to be disappointed. But so hyped anyway for the Crees!
