Rise of Rome revisited...

The war situation is excellent, gentlemen. Good work!

We are deffinately the #1 civ in the world now! England will be crushed!

I have a suggestion for the management of our new cities:

- All the cities north of the former Greek empire are worthless, 1 shield/1 trade producers. All else is lost due to corruption.

We should build a temple and switch to wealth in these cities. Period. No matter what we build in them, they are worthless. Except workers and settlers, if the population is Roman.

We are earning 6 gold per turn, and I dont want to lower the science rate. Building a colosseum and aquaduct in a city with 99% corruption is a total waste of time and gold. Lets not do that, OK? Leave 'em size 6.

Only cities near Rome and Corinth should get improved. Say within 12-15 squares.

Lets not cripple our economy like we did in the German game. We could research ALL the tech in this game, theres plenty of time left. Thank Heaven we are a republic!

I want to get radar artillery, you see...

We shld also begin settling our non-Roman workers in our most Romanized cities and assimilate them to become good Roman citizens and raise new pure Roman workers fr those 'useless' cities. ;) Cos pure Romans work twice as fast as our slaves. It'll hold down worker mgmt in the later game (as we have found out in the German game), esp when chasing pollution.

We can also raise conscripts in the colonial cities for garrison duty in 'safe' cities, in an emergency.

Only cities near Rome and Corinth should get improved. Say within 12-15 squares.
Yes, we shld have a range of production cities around our capitals and leave the rest as colonial outposts. ;) I built up Forts Knight and Dragon :) cos didn't want them to flip over to the English side. Wasn't expecting war that soon. :o :D

A few points regarding workers:

I used Roman workers to boost the population of our new cities. I also used a couple Greek workers for that purpose as the Greek civ is gone. I didn't want to use English workers for fear of enhancing an English culture flip.

While foreign workers are slower they are also free. With our economy only netting 6 gold/turn right now, adding Roman workers to cities cuts our expenses at an opportune time.

Perhaps it is time to consider moving our capital. Rome and Corinth are close. A capital closer to 'England' might boost our overall productivity.

I wouldnt move the capitol, because Rome has ALOT of improvements and wonders already. It would set us back.

The English cities will provide resources and luxuries, just no gold nor science. Tax collectors can be put to work in these worthless cities for some income too.

And as KD pointed out, they are good fodder for workers and conscripts. When needed.

For now, I plan to use the English workers, like donsig said, they are free. "Slave labor". No cost to us! After the war ends, we can replace them with Roman workers from the worthless towns, and add the English to our core cities for extra production.

Now Im off to squash England!

I hope.

The corruption problem could be solved by going to a Democracy once all the war is settled. We're going for a non-militaristic victory, right? After we take London (confirmation on them being out of rubber, BTW :D :D :D :D) they should crumble under the trads of our tanks !

As I said, once the war is over and our tech lead is pretty well secure (aren't the Iroquois our major competitors and like 6 techs behind us) we should probably go isolationist Democracy. Build our spaceship, and head for Alpha Centuari!

Anyone agree?

We could play it by ear. Joespaniel mentioned something about getting radar artillery. Would be a shame to get it and not be able to use it. Especially if there's lots of enemy pikemen (or bowmen) around.

If we're doing all right with republic, like getting techs at a decent rate and conducting war without happiness problems, then maybe the order should just be: 'steady as she goes'. Brings to mind an old saying: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.';)

BTW, who says we can't be a republic, wage a world war AND launch a space ship!

Unfortunately, Democracy will NOT stop the corruption Toasty. Ive tried it.

The only solution, Ive been able to find, is simply dont waste your time, effort and gold on far away cities. Build a temple, maybe walls and switch to wealth. A size 6 city can squeeze out 2 tax collectors too, if you irrigate plenty.

Workers and settlers can be built from the wasted cities, once our people are the dominant population in them.

Im all for going Democracy though. Workers are faster.

I would love to research ALL technology. Radar artillery looks way cool.

Spaceship victory is OK with me too. I havent seen one yet.

Ill post a summary of my turns in a couple hours.

I wonder why. :crazyeyes

But doing it the other way is a lot more fun. ;) We shld see how it goes before deciding on anything though.

Anyway, now we still have three civs fighting it out on the other continent; let us play the puppetmaster and manipulate them to our delight! Mwahahaha! :mwaha: :cooool:

1904 (End of donsig's last turn) - Some armor and infantry near Toastyopolis was unfortified and used to attack Hastings and Canterbury. Former razed, latter captured. Loaded Ohwell's elite transport ;), to attack Richmond. Changed alot of cities workers around, and increased gold to 35/turn without losing any science or civil disorder.

1906 (My first turn) - Navy blasts Richmond and troops land. Elephantine is captured, splitting England in two. Much troop movement, as I plan to unleash hell next turn.

1908 - It begins! Four cities attacked at once: Newcastle, Thebes, Pi-Ramses and Nottingham. Tanks smash through into Nottingham, capturing Adam Smith's, and a great leader, Anthony, is produced in the battle! Gold goes from 44 to 95 per turn! Woo-hoo! Several workers captured as well.
Manhattan Project begun in Rome! Researching Amphibious Warfare, we may need Marines someday...
5 Iroquois ironclads show up off Liverpool.

1910 - Germany and Iroquois sign a military alliance against England. The buzzards are circling. Iroquois ironclads blow up roads all around Liverpool, and destroyers show up off Fort Dragon.
A peace treaty is signed with Bismark, but he is still sore at us.
Thebes captured, with 7 workers inside!
Pi-Ramses razed!
Newcastle captured!
Due to the close proximity of Iroquois forces, 2 tanks rush into an attack against Dover without bombarding first, and we take it! 4 workers captured, one was Roman!
More workers captured by our advancing forces near Oxford, for a total of 20 in 3 turns. We wont have to build any more at this rate!

OK, more tomorow.

Domestic stuff:
Everything from Exeter and Glouchester north is a 1 shield/1 trade city. Concentrating all worker effort on the rest.
Im starving down all captured cities to 1 population, and starting temples in them immeadiately.
Some cities, like Thermopylae, had way too much irrigation. Alot of mining fixed it.
Airports underway in many cities.
We have 3 urainium tiles already connected, and construction of nuclear submarines has begun. Mwah-hah-hah!

OK, I promise to finish tomorow. Good night!

1912
- 3 English cavalry counter-attack, all are destroyed.
- Battlefield Medicine is finished.
- Position many units for next offensive, which will be directed at Oxford, Birmingham and Liverpool. England is almost finished!
- Disbanded old cannons inside Latin Quater for the shields, then rush-built a temple. There was enough no-mans-land for foriegn settlers to get a toe-hold on our coast, and we dont want that! The border will expand and keep them out now.
- Changed my mind about Amphibious Warfare, and switched to Computers.
13 turns. Hmm, that wont do.:nono:
Lowered the luxury rate to 10%, added entertainers to four cities to prevent disorder, raised science rate to 70% :yeah: and now it will be done in 7 turns.
Cash flow is breaking even, but its only for 7 turns, we can afford it. 1500 gold in treasury at present.
I plan to rush the SETI as soon as its available, and then drop to 60% science, which gives us 100+ gold/turn!

OK, Im finishing up now. Back in a little while...

1920
- England is ours! Elizabeth has withdrawn to her little island off the coast of Russia. Peace is made, and We Love The Emporer is celebrated in most of our cities! We rule the continent!

1926
- Elite tanks are garrisoned at Toastyopolis and Argos.
- Artillery is at Athens.
- Temples finished in most new cities, now producing wealth.
- The coastline is pretty sealed up, no more cities should be needed.
- Russians are sniffing around our coastline, but theres no place to land their settler!
- Luxury trade with Iroquois is extended for 100 gold. Its worth it. We get 2 for 2, and it makes 6 citizens happy per city.
- T/S/L is set at 2/6/2, and seems pretty good. Computers in 2 turns. I recommend Ecology next.
- Rome is 4 turns from Manhattan Project, I suggest switching to SETI in 2. Do we want nukes? Peace has descended across our continent. I doubt anyone can touch us now.

All this is up to the new Emporer, the world is our oyster.
Ceasar is dead, long live Ceasar!

Let's go for a space victory then since joe hasn't gotten one yet..... I really really wonder why.

And manipulate the Iroquise, Germans and Russians on the other continent like so many puppets on a string. :mwaha:

Im getting tired of all these huge battles, theres too much stuff to move around. And it makes me anxious, too. :crazyeyes

Spaceship sounds good to me. :D

 We deffinately wont get a UN victory.

We are WAY out in front on technology. With SETI, we will be unstoppable. I seem to recall being behind England in tech not that long ago... heh, heh, heh...:groucho:

That was a good team effort. Kudos! :goodjob:

I can play tomaroww, I have some, stuff to do;)

I guess I was correct. Spaceship is the way we shall win:D

Of course, on my turn I will try my hardest to get some nukes, maybe I will launch one or two:p

Seriously, I really want some nukes. And launch them at maybe, uh, Russia? We haven't seen any conflict with them yet... I never had war with Russia in any of my games either... How are they doing? Are they small, and puny? I hope so:D

What are you talking about???

We took over Russia in the German SG!
