I know absolutely nothing about Risk.

I love this game and play it quite a lot. Mostly against friends but also at a few competitions...

I've played the board version and various computer Risk-Like games. But never the offical title for the computer.

Risk...*frowns*

Not one of my favorite games as I am more into games that rely a LITTLE less on the dice.

Risk is a game for the mentally challenged conqueror.

You know Civ 1 and Civ 2 combat rely on dice rolling. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif" border=0>

*sighs* Yes they technically do...

Storytime: My brother, who I might add is a strategically challenged guy, once stopped an advance of 17 (give or take 1 or 2) armies with 2 armies. He then turned in a set of cards for something like 45 armies and wiped me off the face of the earth. Suddenly the guy thought he was Rommel. It took a few severe beatings in Panzer Blitz and one nasty game of Diplomacy for him to see the light.

I am a gaming addict, so I can live with the importance of chance in almost all of my beloved games. Countless times I have bemoaned failed saving throws in D&D, the death of my German armies attacking Karelia in Axis & Allies on the first turn, or even the galling prospect of losing several tanks to musketeers in Civ. But Risk is just a little TOO much for me. Having someone with no tactical skills whatsoever (aka my wife) whoop my a** at a war game just irks me somewhat, especially when it is just because I can't roll higher than a 4 with three dice!!!

But I digress. Without luck there would be no games, and without games there would be no Civ, and what kind of life would that be???

Anyway, Risk in my opinion is pure luck, I just like my luck a little diluted by strategy.

Risk isn't pure luck, it is just that there is too much luck.
And the worst is losing a D&D character to a failed Death Magic saving throw. Damn you DM!!

Risk does rely a lot on dice. For example, one time I was playing my friend and another of his friends. I was based in Africa and S. America. My friend was based in N.America N. Asia and Austrailia. And his friend was based in S. Asia and Europe. My friend gathered about 50 units near My South American front and attacked my 3 guys in Venezuala. He got me down to one guy, but I kept rolling 6's with that single guy. He eventually won but could only transfer 3 units there

I have played both versions, for me the board game is better. There is something about pushing those little blocks around the map. It is ALWAYS best to get a grip on Australia first for the bonus and then expand from there.

Ah yes, Risk. The only strategy game ever invented where starting out in Australia is the most advantageous position.

(Damn, things are slow today. What the heck am I doing in "@all other games"?!?)

The only time I played Risk was Risk 2 on the computer, in school, for American History...It was the only exciting thing we did all year, there was a lot of backstabbing but of course I won
lol.gif

I agree with Flatlander Fox that it's too dependent on chance, but it's also very addictive...while we were playing it (it took a week of class time

) I couldn't think about anything else...at first I had no idea what I was doing, but once i got the idea of controlling continents I broke an alliance and the rest was easy.

The Hasbo computer version of Risk (Risk I, 1996) is great. About 20 years ago I quit playing the board game of Risk after a younger brother kept rolling 6's for his lone defender. I hate the roll of dice in a game, and don't think I'll ever play a game with dice in it again.

But Risk I is great, as long as you choose Ultimate Risk and the option for advanced combat (no dice rolls). It also has some really good scenarios. The big map of Europe (180 territories) is best, but it also has Asia, North America (1800's), and of course the world.

Risk II is marginal... it is a step backwards in most ways, except for graphics. No scenarios, no extra maps... a very boring game after you play it a couple times. And never a challenge against the AI at any time.

I have to say the Risk from 1989 is the best! There's nothing like being able to play a game of Risk in 3 or 4 minutes!

The EGA graphics are stunning!

Of course, the game looked a lot better on the Amiga, but most games did back then.

I love risk the original one for the computer has the ultimate risk scenarios about Napolean and it is great.

The board game is good too

But dice bother me, when I play games of chance it better involve cards
