RK-07: Sid Meier's Janissaries!

He did not survive this encounter despite the forest and Woods2 promotions

RK07_003.jpg

while the Medic promoted scout whupped a lion and two wolves in icy wastes of the north between Cy and Augie. Go figger.

Whipped the settler and put the overflow into a warrior while researching Hunting and Archery and settled Erdrine on the X and started a worker to chop out a library soonest.

RK07_004.jpg

The first bogie appeared to the west of Vienne so the scout in the north moved south to take up a spotter's position in the jungle hill west of the edge of the picture. You will note that Augie has claimed the western copper mine.

RK07_005.jpg

Got to Writing sooner than I thought I would

RK07_006.jpg

while the capitol grew back to four and started another settler. The settler can be whipped out now to settle the way station. Put any overflow into the warrior now in queue and send the garrison with the settler as there are lions in those hills.

RK07_010.jpg

I want a town set up to produce military while Erdrine and the capitol get their libraries up. Erdrine will need the library to expand the borders.

Cy dropped by and I opened the borders as he has no enemies yet

RK07_009.jpg

Research is currently set for maths, but I would change it to Animal Husbandry once the worker at Erdrine is close to finishing the shelving for the books.

Yikes! That's Brennus' city? Ok, that's it, I'm definitely suffering from WOTM3 trauma... thought Vienne was ours.

Good city site, Bede. And good turns. We're looking good and can take out the Big B sooner or later.

Roster:
1. RK
2. Bede
3. Furrie (up now for 30)
4. Eshunna (on deck for 30)
5. Pholkhero

Robo you just love that bump guy don't you? Looks like a good game.

lol I'll give him some time to get back from work or whatever... But I'll check round 10 PM (ie in 4 hours) and I might pick it up if Furrie still hasn't gotten it ;)

Yeah I love the cute bump emoticon.

I think Furrie is busy for the past X weeks. Before that he's usually fast to play.

OK, I've got the save, then.

I'll settle "waystation", chop some culture to try and claim the rice from Vienna (only food in the area unless I'm much mistaken).
Connecting the copper and start axes will be high priority as well.

About next city placement, that eastern cluster of resources sures looks juicy (gold, stone, spices ). I would tend to settle our next town in the area soon, despite it being veery food poor.
Settling on the coast 1W of the gold looks OK. [haven't checked the save yet, it's only based on screenshots so it might be a daft move] It misses the incense but I think we should not spread out too much.

The western grasslands + cow + phants are nice tho, and Augustus is dangerously close so we better hurry...

Since we are Organized and have cottaged FP we should be able to support both early on, but we need to discuss wich one is to be settled first...

Waystation can use the corn SE of Istanbul so losing the rice to Brennus is not catastrophic. West would be better than east, after that, I think, though you are right, Augie may get there before we do. Not a lot of places jump right out and say settle here, though.

don't forget a library soonish, too, for our GSs ~ after Math, it's only 2 more techs until Paper (CoL and CS, right?) ~we'll need Scientists for bulbing.

Well I took a look at the save. I hadn't noticed that most of Waystation's fat cross was under jungle, making it a junk city until we trade for IW...

And settling the western grasslands will give us yet another food poor site (only food is the cow but now it belongs to Augie) until civil service. But I'll deny it to him anyways, the cottage prospects are too tempting.

About Edirne, I plan to cut the 2 grass forests, but my guess is that we first need AH (only 7 turns...) to hook up the cow, the library will take forever to complete otherwise, even with chopz.

So I'll switch to AH, put the new worker on pasture, chop settler and settle crappy waystation, hook up phants to grow capitol on max food, and settle western plains. If I have time to spare and barbs are not too opressing, I'll start a new settler for the gold spot.

Feel free to criticize, I'm not playing until 10 hours or so.

Everything went as planned, after whipping, Istambul was reconfigured to max growth while reaserching AH.
Ankara was soon settled in the middle of the jungle.

Civ4ScreenShot0005-3.jpg

The workers were ordered to hook up Phants, and cows. And the library started in Edirne.
A few turns later, some new neighborhood down south :

Civ4ScreenShot0006-1.jpg

After an archer, a new settler is started in Istambul, and some more interresting things occur : so long for the horsies... And on the same turn, Brennus builds the GW.

Civ4ScreenShot0007-1.jpg

The settler and lib are sped up through chopping, and yet another barb city pops up, northwards this time. It can be captured (and another town settled further eastwards) as the site is quite decent or burnt so we can found gold city later on.
With that barb activity, no way we can send a settler east right now. Bursa is settled in the western grassland.

Civ4ScreenShot0009-1.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

The last ten turns were veery barbfull  some pretty rough times, I got lucky when a lone warrior defending Edrine defeated in the IT an archer AND a warrior, promoted, and killed a warrior and an archer in the 2 following turns :crazyeye: He is now combat+cover

Civ4ScreenShot0013-1.jpg

End of the set, a fast overview of our soon-to-be-glorious empire.

Civ4ScreenShot0016.jpg

ATM, the barb situation is almost iunder control. Guess they just got upset at the view of our beloved neighbor's shiny new wall and took their anger on us. We shall kick big B's butt fotr that someday

We just finished maths, and need a whopping 45 turns to get currency... we need some cottages in grass town, and a library is being built in Istambul, and should be whipped since our capitol really grows fast (it's about to grow BTW).

Diplomatically wise, I refused OB with Monty (he's far far away, founded jew, which we will not adopt, & he's a jerk) and big B, for obvious reasons. Feel free to open if you want to scout his territory, though. Vienne shure would nicely fit in our emmpire, especially with horsies in the fat cross :scan:

Here's the save :

Good work.
Hmm... Currency in 45? Kekeke... do we have a library on the capital yet?
We won't have Iron Working for a long while I guess. Edirne's lib is about to finish, I see. Good. Once copper is up we should be ready to go.

Roster:
1. RK (on deck for 30)
2. Bede
3. Furrie
4. Eshunna
5. Pholkhero (up now for 30)

Nope, no lib yet, coz of barb pressure :D
It should be the next build, and probably whipped since Istambul has so much food (cit will grow unhappy soon).

We also need at least one more worker in order to make Bursa (grass town) profitable in a finite number of turns.

And plz, be careful, Ankara (Waystation) has no garrison yet, but will build an archer next turn, which was meant to go in Edirne. A lib. should be set up in the city to claim the rice before Vienne does, even if we won't be able to use it until someone kindly teaches us how to remove jungles

Either we get Alphabet, or wait for someone to research Alphabet. It's just that simple.

If we want, we can detour Alphabet now to get IW, but to detour for 1 tech...

Eventually someone will get Alphabet for us. Hopefully it's someone we can ally with so we can get Iron Working (and Alphabet hopefully) right away, and start selling techs for money and improved relations.

BTW, we really need to be careful with WFYABTA this patch, especially with Mansa not on the map. (See the Temple of Doom game for example.)

EDIT: I've been reading the new Gunpowder thread. And this is a good point...
Andrei_V said:
Missing Construction on the way is a very bad idea because you could have been building cats all along before Gunpowder.
Construction should probably either be acquired by us, or be traded for as soon as we can (once the AI's or we get Alpha) so we can have a sizable catapult force ready once we whip our first Jans (nothing upgrades to Musketmen, sadly).

Just in the nick of time ~ sorry all, this was my bday week, and i've been celebrating most of the time. I did finally get to play this today, and there's nothing much to report.

ahh, nuts...i only played 15...hold on...

okay, so i played 30.5 (i pushed enter after turn 30, but made no moves :crazyeye: ). Not much else changed. We'll have currency and our first Scientist in a handful of turns i should say.

Turn 103 (970 BC)
Istanbul begins: Library I figure I can whip this next turn, and get some scientists running with all this food.

Edirne finishes: Library
Ankara finishes: Archer

IBT:
While defending in Ottoman territory at Edirne, Warrior defeats (1.36/2): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 48.6%)

Turn 104 (955 BC)
Edirne begins: Granary Hey, half price, right? Why not??
Ankara begins: Barracks I figure with that mined hill, a forested grassland, and cottaged plain, this city will be mostly produciton orientated until the jungle is gone.

I spot an archer leaving the barb city N of istanbul.
955barbarcherov4.jpg

There's already an archer in the area; he moves NW to that forested hill to say hello.

I :whippe: the Library for 3pop, and the overflow will finish an archer there.
Istanbul grows: 4
Istanbul finishes: Library

IBT:
Augustus wants OB borders with us:
940augobbr9.jpg

I check the diplo screen, and see the crazies hate him:
940augob1sw2.jpg

for some reason, that makes me accept this deal, when in retrospect, i think that's :smoke:

Turn 105 (940 BC)
Istanbul grows: 5

IBT:

Turn 106 (925 BC)
I moved that archer to keep an eye on Gaul for the time being.
925gauloi9.jpg

IBT:

Turn 107 (910 BC)
Barbs are approaching erdine; it'll need more defense soon.
Istanbul grows: 6

IBT:
While defending in Ottoman territory at Edirne, Warrior defeats (1.72/2): Barbarian Warrior (Prob Victory: 98.8%) nice! one less barb.

Turn 108 (895 BC)
Geez, two more barbs! South of erdine is barb heaven!!

IBT:

Turn 109 (880 BC)
I swapped the build at Edirne to whip an archer since we need it for defense as we've got two barb bows coming in. If I get the chance, i'm going to send a warrior south to fog bust. Finally, i remembered to hire some scientists @ Istanbul.

IBT:

Turn 110 (865 BC)

IBT:
While defending in Ottoman territory at Edirne, Warrior loses to: Barbarian Archer (1.62/3) (Prob Victory: 84.7%)

Turn 111 (850 BC)
Okay, I remembered to whip the archer one turn, too late, but it didn't matter.

Edirne's borders expand
Edirne finishes: Archer

IBT:

While defending in Ottoman territory at Edirne, Archer I of Edirne (Archer) defeats (3.00/3): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 97.4%)
While defending in Ottoman territory at Edirne, Archer I of Edirne (Archer) defeats (2.16/3): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 99.0%)
Hah! Our new archer is unstoppable!

Napoleon also comes by, but i refuse the deal (still :smoke: )
835nonapdealum5.jpg

Turn 112 (835 BC)
Archer I of Edirne (Archer) promoted: City Garrison I
Edirne finishes: Granary

IBT:

Turn 113 (820 BC)
Edirne begins: Barracks
Bursa grows: 2

IBT:

Turn 114 (805 BC)

IBT:

Turn 115 (790 BC)
Istanbul finishes: Archer

[tbc . . .]

IBT:

Turn 116 (775 BC)
Istanbul begins: Settler This was, i think, another :smoke: move. I intended to settle west of Vienne to add a 3rd culture pressure city to the mix there and flip that city ASAP. However, w/our poor finances, we couldn't afford one anyway.

IBT:
The crazies come by and want to talk business.
760brennusobrm4.jpg

760alexobcv6.jpg

I decide it's better to be on teh crazies side (i think) and so accept to both deals, and will hopefully get a bonus when they ask us to cancel our deals w/Auggie.

Turn 117 (760 BC)

IBT:

Turn 118 (745 BC)
Ahh, nuts, look at this: a new barb city!
745eastbarbcityju1.jpg

Also, @ Erdine, our archer attacks!
745archerattackkr8.jpg

While attacking in Ottoman territory at Edirne, Archer I of Edirne (Archer) defeats (1.56/3): Barbarian Warrior (Prob Victory: 92.7%)

IBT:

Turn 119 (730 BC)
Edirne grows: 3
Ankara finishes: Barracks

IBT:

Turn 120 (715 BC)
Ankara begins: Worker

I also whipped the settler for 3pop as the archer is just about in the right locale.

Istanbul finishes: Settler

IBT:

Turn 121 (700 BC)
Ahh nuts again!
700nomocitiesde0.jpg

There's no way we could settle that (even if we should, now that i see our finances). I guess the settler will have to sleep for now.

IBT:

Turn 122 (685 BC)
Istanbul grows: 4
Edirne finishes: Barracks

IBT:

Turn 123 (670 BC)
Edirne begins: Archer

IBT:
Over the past few turns, I've been tracking an incoming barb axeman coming north towards Edirne. I've been racing to hook up our own copper, but we'll be short. Luckily, he's attacking over the river.
While defending in Ottoman territory at Edirne, Archer I of Edirne (Archer) defeats (2.04/3): Barbarian Axeman (Prob Victory: 93.2%)
While defending in Ottoman territory at Edirne, Archer I of Edirne (Archer) defeats (0.78/3): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 84.0%)
We've got ourselves some good protection down in these parts now.

Turn 124 (655 BC)
Archer I of Edirne (Archer) promoted: City Garrison II
Istanbul grows: 5

IBT:

Turn 125 (640 BC)

IBT:

Turn 126 (625 BC)
Huzzah! :woohoo:
625copperbv8.jpg

Istanbul begins: Axeman

IBT:
Now monty wants in on the fun:
610montyobqm6.jpg

Surely someone will have ABCs soon, right?

Turn 127 (610 BC)
I made it so Istanbul would get 5/52 shields into the axe necessitating the dbl whip there. We can pause growth for a bit w/a worker.
Istanbul finishes: Axeman
Edirne grows: 4
Edirne finishes: Archer

IBT:

Turn 128 (595 BC)
Edirne begins: Axeman
Archer promoted: City Garrison I

I sent our first axeman west to gaurd that border there. Just in case, Augustus has himself a praet army, our Axe Army of One (TM) will take care of things.

Istanbul finishes: Barracks

IBT:

Turn 129 (580 BC)
Istanbul begins: Worker
Ankara finishes: Worker

IBT:

Turn 130 (565 BC)
Ankara begins: Library

IBT:

Turn 131 (550 BC)

IBT:
While defending in Ottoman territory at Edirne, Archer I of Edirne (Archer) defeats (3.00/3): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 100.0%)

Turn 132 (535 BC)
Okay, here's the situation with the locals:
535diplodv6.jpg

And here's our grand empire:
535overviewfa1.jpg

Once the Scientist is born, we should rearrange the tiles at Istanbul and focus on shields to get that worker out quicker. Hopefully, then, we'll be able to work all FPs and the mine and have enough for 2 scientists.

Greetings from the Ottoman Empire!

[save is the above postcard!]

No prob, good turns. So glad you're all still here to play in spite of the busy Christmas season!
I'll pickup in 14 hours.

Good turns guys, i'm really sorry I didn't manage to let anything now again.
I should really start spending more time to CIV4, which I will try to do from now on :)
Sorry again that i missed my turnset.
