Rod02-Caesar's Confusion

I was referring to the Cetlic warrior and settler.

Spoiler :
They have undoubtedly travelled a different route than the GSs you've been fighting in the Viking desert. From the discussion, it seems that you weren't aware of the connection.

Most of the nations have sent in a unit now and then from a direction other than their main traffic. By now many of them have planted towns far from home. This type of a game will lead to exaggerated behavior as the land is quite scarce.

This is why I took so many settlers and could not even attack half of them. The area near us is probably the only game in town now.

Guys, sorry for the delay; Wednesday was my main window, and things were going well until the 5 year old threw up all over the upstairs floor. Twice.

I am finishing up this evening. Turns are maybe 1/2 hour with all the notations--trying to get a CBob-worthy turn log.

What is the next step here? It has been more than a week since I finished my set. Do we need a skip here. I suggest we do a skip if no progress by tomorrow. Surely 2 minutes could be found to post a status, once every other day. Even if it is no more than to say still working on it.

Apologies, all. Had some personal/family issues come up that had to be dealt with. (Nothing worrisome, in fact on balance good things, but had to be worked on. Would rather not say more.) Have basically been out of commission over the weekend.

I will hand off the save now rather than hold things up any longer. My participation the next week or two may be pretty minimal; if you don't get a quick "got it" from me, assume it's a skip.

Save is from early in 510 AD. Most units unmoved this turn.

A few handoff notes--most if not all of the pressure, and new civs, are coming from the south and east. Spain and America appeared with settler pairs near Salamanca. We're getting fairly heavy pressure on our eastern cities; the south is basically a bunch of settler pairs and impis for the most part. By contrast, the north (at least the last 2 turns or so) is very quiet.

We are at 31 cities; Anjar or Grand River will make 32 and allow another army (though we would need a leader). I had contemplated abandoning Memphis, and it might be a good idea to do so and send that army north (this will mean that other settlers flow in though).

Again, sorry for the delay.

Spoiler :
Rod02 450 AD Preflight:

CA2, Notepad open.

Have a look-see at everything. Not much to do. I wake the army at Lutetia, but not sure where to send it just yet.

IBT: Lots of movement, including eight (?) settler pairs, mostly in the south.

Vikings suicide two archers on the 3/5 elite legion up north, but a Gallic comes out ofthe fog to finish it [2-1].

460 (1): Berlin MI-MI. Caesaraugusta rax-MI. ACav from Veii. Viroconium library-MI.

We have 29 cities, need 32 for an army. Move Octavian to Lutetia, to rush aqueduct next turn.

5/5* legion d. Egyptian archer at Viroconium.
5/5 vACav d. French warrior at Artaxata.
Found Hippo Regius in the west (catapult).
vMI gets shut out by Arab settler pair near Ravenna [4-2].
eMI whacks same settler pair, redlining in the process [5-2] and revealing two Gallics (yuck). Cover with eLegion.
2 of 3 catapults hit Gallic at Trondheim down to 2/4. Army whacks it on his way home [6-2]; there's another Gallic out in the desert.
eACav whacks warrior near Frankfurt [7-2], going 4/6 in the process.

IBT: Gallic whacks 4/5 eLegion in forest (boo).
Zulu suicide archer and impi at Salamanca [9-3].
Greeks land a sword at Trondheim.
Hittites wanna chat. No.
Viroconium attracting some love from the AI.

470 (2): Veii market-library. Lutetia MI-aqueduct.

Octavian rushes aqueduct in Lutetia.

2nd whacks enkidu on mountain near Hippo Regius. Then lose an eLegion and an eACav trying to dislodge a badly-placed sword. Send the army to do the job [11-5].
Bomb Greek sword at Trondheim, kill with eLegion [12-5].
Move ACav from Veii to the north, need some help with Gallics.
3rd takes on a spear at Memphis, losing 4 hp. [13-5]
Bomb sword at Viroconium 1 of 2 times.
7th to Viroconium, load two legion* into it. One more next turn for a 20/20 killing machine.
eACav goes red killing a 2/3 Gallic in forest, but generates Titus for my trouble. He runs to Pompeii.
eLegion retreats a 3/3 gallic; vMI kills it and promotes [15-5]
vLegion kills archer advancing on Anjar [16-5].

Lots of unit healing.

IBT: Gallic crushes a 4/4 MI fortified behind wall at Hispalis.
Zulu reduce their unit count by three at Salamanca [19-6].

480 (3): Rome MI-horse (at 15 spt, we can use a few of these for upgrades/killing exposed units). Kazan settler-settler. Artaxata walls (oops!) - catapult. Cumae MI-MI. Neapolis catapult-aqueduct. Lutetia duct-market. Brundisium MI-MI.

Antium wants to riot, move in an MI as an MP.

Titus rushes aqueduct at Neapolis.

eLegion whacks Greek sword at Trondheim, going 2/5 [20-6].
eLegion* whacks Viking archer onj our iron at Brundisium [21-6]
4/5 legion whacks Gallic in the desert.
eLegion whacks Gallic at Hispalis, going 2/5. [23-6]
vACav whacks archer.
Inca trying to sneak a horse through on a mountain at Byzantium. Two cats and an eLegion later, it's dead [24-6].
Bomb an Aztec jaguar at Viroconium; miss an Incan sword. Aside: Orange jags look cool.
vMI kills Egypt archer at Viro. Army kills the other and returns home.
3rd whacks a spear and captures the Egyptian town of Memphis, size 5, 1 resister. [27-6].
5th takes out an archer near Trondheim, then a spear in the desert causes 6 hp damage [29-6].
eLegion whacks archer at Trondheim [30-6].
vMI takes Jap settler pair NNW of Hispalis [31-6].
Rush cat at Hippo Regius for 32g.
2nd whacks an Impi at Tatu [32-6].
vACav kills yellow archer outside Tatu [33-6].
eLegion goes red but destroys the just-founded town of Maastricht and 6g [34-6].

Upgrade a few vLegions to MI.

IBT: Lots of moves but no attacks. Our army takes a point off an Impi near Tatu. The resistance in Memphis ends.

490 (4): Aurelianorum warrior-galley. Syracuse settler-settler. Neapolis aqueduct-barracks. Pisae riots (oops). Hippo Regius catapult-catapult. Byzantium MI-MI.

2nd finishes impi near Tatu then advances on Hovd [35-6].
6th gets a 4th vlegion added (dunno why it had an MI in it), then zaps a Mongol town I forgot to note the name of. [36-6].
vMI kills landed Greek sword at Trondheim [37-6].
Use a 3/5 legion to whack an Arab archer in the desert. No leader.
Use 5th army to whack a Viking sword, then advance toward Bergen to hopefully pillage the heck out of some roads. We have enough units up there to handle the one spear that's visible.
Move two legions from Syracuse to Hippo Regius to reinforce; two Sumerian swords + 1 enkidu are on mountains next to it, and the catapults sucked.

Great news! We meet the Indians outside the newly-founded town of Warwick. They have all of three cities and lack Philo, CoL, Lit, MM, Curency, and Monarchy. I DOW.

eACav goes red but kills an orange sword near Avaris [39-6].

IBT: Roughly a bazillion moves. Sumeria loses a sword at Hippo Regius [40-6].

500 (5): Rome horse-horse. Antium riots--why?? CA2 missed one? Frankfurt pike-pike. Hispalis aqueduct-market. Seleucia rax-MI. Palmyra pike-MI.

6th mows through a Hittite settler pair on the way to Grand River; 2nd cuts down an impi and a Mayan JT-settler pair [43-6].
e*ACav kills warrior at Artaxata.
Army returns to Hippo Regius as Hovd is size 1.

Things are moderately ugly at Seleucia: 4 Egyptian archers, two Incan swords, another Egyptian archer, and an Aztec archer/spear pair outside the city gates. A Dutch sword and Aztec horse appear headed for Berlin, with one eLegion inside.

Move pike from Frankfurt toward Berlin, arriving next turn.
eLegion whacks archer outside Frankfurt [44-6].

We've met America somewhere; they have 7 cities, no cash, down Lit/MM/Currency/Monarchy. I DOW. Ah. It's a settler pair near Salamanca.

Send the Mighty 7th out to whack to Incan spears that are guarding four swords 2E of Brundisium. That should help the catapults there. Army 16/20. [48-6].

ACav takes out one spear in Anjar [49-6].

At Seleucia, an ACav, eLegion, and arriving MI kill three Egypt archers [52-6].

510 (6): Pompeii riots (#&$@($&(#*&$, I suck). ACav from Veii.

Spain has arrived at the party with a settler pair from the south. I take their 79g for Currency and then DOW them. They have 7 cities.

Last turn of Mono = 20%.

Hope all settles down for you. I do not see a save, did I miss it?

Blearg. I thought I'd uploaded.

Here it is.

I would not make any horses. We have 7 armies and a number of AC's to deal with that stuff and we will not have money to upgrade horses. Just park them for MP duty.

MDI in army so it can hit harder. They have 4 attack, Legions have 3. I would not be in a rush to upgrade any more Legions as we cannot make them now. They are great to put into any new MDI army for their defense.

If you have MDI MDI MDI and Legion in any army it will put up the legion on defense and put up the MDI on offense.

"500 (5): Rome horse-horse. Antium riots--why?? CA2 missed one? Frankfurt pike-pike. Hispalis aqueduct-market. Seleucia rax-MI. Palmyra pike-MI."

I would expect the town grew or some unit stepped on a tile, causing reduction in income for lux.

I need a skip. I am also up in sgotm14 and RL is going to be a bugger this week.

Looks like we have a lot of workers at risk. Some units are also in a precarious spots along with a few cats. I would not send out solo units, nor any cats. Keep the cats in places that see lots of traffic.

I would not have captured Memphis as it is not contiguous with our empire. It is not only a potential flip, but units can come at it from all sides. If we are about to fill the gap with a town or three, that is another story.

The way to lower your kill ratio is to have solo units out getting in fights. Have towns not connected to the empire that will get attacked. To not funnel units to a killing field. We really have little control over funneling right now, but we can reduce the action in some places, but not offer a good target.

We need to not expand in all directions at the same time as it will just thin out our forces and give us more border to defend. When you focus in one or two directions, you tend to have help.

You do not end up with armies in all corners. Only the armies are sure fire wins, all solo units can lose. Try to do solo fights in such a way as to not leave them exposed. Best when they fight and then an army fights and covers them.

I know it is tempting to use that solo elite Legion to attack a town, but look what happens. It loses or if it wins it is damaged and is counter attacked. That tactic was good when we attacked towns with archers and warriors and only had 1 or 2 of them.

Now we have a lot of nations running around, so it has a low chance of staying alive after the battle.

Lets use pikes to defend town, not Legions. Use them to attack or add to armies. We cannot make any more of them, so we are better served to not lose them.

We currently have 22 units in our land and maybe another 15 or so close. One of the traps I think has been to try to grab as many of those settler combos as you can. This leads to solo units out in the open.

What we did was trade a legion for a spear and two slaves, which may not even make it back. Attack them, when it can be done safely and not expose us. Once all the space near us is filled, we can look to set up a trap of our own. Probably one on each side of the map.

I would switch that horse and the galley. What are we going to do with a galley anyway? They cannot attack anything and the AI will sink them, if we send them out. They are just a waste of time and shields in this type of game.

We have no need of transports now or in the future and even if we do, we are not likely to have money for upgrades. Money is needed to pay for research down the road and an occasional rush.

I'm not done with Rat34, but I'll get to this by tomorrow night.

I have finished my turn-set (only played 8), we are in pretty good shape. We have some more armies, getting leaders is pretty common right now. We are expanding borders slowly, but steadily. I tried to avoid salients, so I didn't grab some towns that were ripe. Here is my turn-log:
Spoiler :

Pre-Flight: CivAssist 2, Word running. Open the save, look things over.
OMG, things look sort of crazy, workers exposed, poorly defended cities under threat, and worst of all, 2 move units all over the place.

Killing an Aztec horse gets me a Leader, Trajan. Attack and take Anjar, no losses, I can now create an army. Clean up tons of loose enemies.

Settlers 2
Workers 8
Slaves 117

Press enter=>

IBT: Too many enemy moves to count, no intolerable threats. Impi grabs an unguarded catapult. Monotheism arrives, next is Chivalry.
Rome Pike=>MDI.
Cumae MDI=>MDI.
Pisae MDI=>MDI.
Hispalis riots on growth.
Tarentum Catapult=>Catapult.

Turn 1, 520 AD: Bergen taken, new Viking capital is Rekjavik.
As usual, clean up many enemy troops.

IBT: Enemies up north suddenly focus on Bergen. Southwest sees a large number of French and Mayan Swords, more pesky Egyptian Archers in the east.
Berlin MDI=>MDI.
Ta-Tu MDI=>Pike.
Antium riots…..hmm, it seems like I missed that one.
Ravenna Aqueduct=>Marketplace.

Turn 2, 530 AD: Lots of fighting, lose one Legionary and have an AC that will die next IBT. We need Knights soon.

IBT: Lose a Legionary and an AC…ouch. French swords retreat… maybe they are going to fight someone else?
Salamanca Worker=>Barracks.
Lutetia riots….jeez.
Brundisium MDI=>Library.
Jerusalem MDI=>MDI.

Turn 3, 540 AD: Cleanup duty. Capture Avaris. Some work in the northeast could clear that sector.
Lose an MDI on a 2hp sword, doing no damage.
Settle Nicopolis near Nicomedia.

IBT: Russian Archer kills a redlined MDI.
Rome MDI=>Cathedral(Knight pre-build.)
Artaxata Catapult=>Catapult.
Viroconium MDI=>MDI.
Byzantium MDI=>MDI.

Turn 4, 550 AD: Usual stuff.

IBT: Veii Library=>Courthouse. (Knight pre-build.) SoZ=>AC.
Cumae MDI=>MDI.
Neapolis Settler=>Settler.
Nicomedia MDI=>MDI.

Turn 5, 560 AD: Reluctantly raise lux to 10% to keep Antium producing at maximum.
Found Londinium near Warwick.

IBT: The north is really heating up with Celt MDIs, Greek and Japanese Swords and Arab Archers.
Memphis Worker=>Worker.
Tarentum Catapult=>Catapult.

Turn 6, 570 AD: Pretty easy turn, but lose a healthy MDI attacking a 3MC.

IBT: Whoa the north keeps getting uglier.
French are heading south, away from us.
Karakorum Marketplace=>Library.
Pompeii Marketplace=>Pike.

Turn 7, 580 AD: Generate an MGL with an AC, create an empty army.
AC army takes Aexandria.

IBT: The units keep pouring into the north, and we get some attacks at Bergen and Londinium. The south is also heating up.
Syracuse Settler=>Settler.
Pisae MDI=>MDI.
Seleucia Pike=>Pike.
Avaris Worker=>Courthouse.

Turn 8, 590 AD: Another elite AC becomes a leader. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough cities, so I rush an Aqueduct at Nicomedia.

IBT: French seem to mostly be passing by but several tiles pillaged by Japanese and Zulu. Aztecs appear again, a Sword and a Jag. It will soon be very hot in the north, Pike in Bergen survives multiple attacks. The west is heating up with plenty of Sumerian Swords and the south is getting busy.
Chivalry arrives, next is Engineering.
Frankfurt Pike=>Pike.
Cumae MDI=>Knight.
Nicomedia Aqueduct=>Courthouse.
Hispalis Marketplace=>Library.
Palmyra MDI=>MDI.

Turn 9, 600 AD: Get a leader Germanicus. Capturing Thebes, Warwick and Grand River lets me turn him into an Army.
An eMDI creates a leader Claudius. Rushes a courthouse in Nicomedia.
Leave a Settler highlighted, he is to go to the Dyes and build a town on top once Hovd is destroyed, giving us a 4th luxury, though that might have to wait until the Sumerian swords are cleared. Also, though Bergen is surrounded and may fall, do not risk the army there, it needs to heal.

Civilian units:
Settlers 1
Workers 8
Slaves 132

Military units:
Warriors 3
Archer 1
Spearmen 3

The save:

Knight armies I love them at this stage. If we get to the point were we have solo knights and get a leader, but cannot form an army, consider scrapping one of the other armies. You get 100 shields and we swap a legion army for a knight army.

If will be a while before that could come up. In this type of game, just play how ever many turns you feel like. If you need to hold the game for days, just pop in and post something. I like to just put up my log to that point, so I don't to do it all at once. This lets others know the game is not idle.
