Rod1- Something Enjoyable

How about we put you as inactive, and when you are free, come back, we'd hate to lose you altogether Yahya. Stick around as a lurker until you are able.

That sugar was irrigated by the end of my turns. did barbs pillage it?

You may recall that I got yelled at for irrigating it and I have a pic of that having been irrigated.

I am now concerned about my saves - if info is lost in the upload what do I do in future?

Sugar on plains is subject to the despo penalty, so why bother irrigating it? Mine it and get an extra shield, irrigating it does nothing right now. Sugar on plains irrigated gets 3 food in a more advanced government, despo penalty lowers that to 2. Othniel pointed that out earlier, much to Darski's chagrin. See post #89.
I didn't see that just before I played. My bad.

I have the same issue is Despotism; mine green and irrigate brown. Now I'm yelling at myself.

I don't know how the irrigation disappeared, but I don't think it has anything to do with the upload.

Civ 3 weirdness. A 1 and a 0 got crossed.

Regarding the Irrigation Mystery, i stopped the job when I started playing.

CivRulesall is UP!

That was the very turn when it was finished...

On my turns, I will road only from now on. I know roads are good and y'all can make the executive decisions about mine or irrigate.

Dunno, When I started playing, The worker was green meaning it could be moved so i moved it. the irrigation job needed 1 turn to complete

That despotic penalty is a real killer and can sneak up anytime.

Early in the game, say before 1000 BC or so, the tile needs to be improved before it is roaded. This is because early production is so crucial and there are only a handful of cities and every improvement is important. Later, and as the empire grows and more workers are available, roading is done first and then mine/irrigation.

The difficulty I face regarding the despotism production penaly is that I ignore it. That is, when I improve a tile and I am a despot, I still follow the rule of thumb: mine green and irrigate brown. I do not consider that the tile is Sugar, Wheat or Flood Plains. And that is bad.

That is the downside of debate, it can make a person indecisive. It's like bonus grassland tiles, after choosing a government and before the Golden Age. I mine it or leave it mined, others irrigate. Irrigating lessens the shields, but during the GA the shields double. So for the time of the GA, you want it irrigated. But later, when railing, a railed and mined Bonus Grassland gets 3 shields, an irrigated BG only gets one shield. As always, what to do is situationally dependent. So when confused, you need rules of thumb. 95% of the time, mine green and irrigate brown is the best policy. If you are confused, follow the rule of thumb, and don't worry about what us flighty intellectuals think. At Regent, losing a shield is not fatal. Even at Emperor, you can make mistakes and survive. So relax, Darski, and play as best you can. Lurkers like to educate, but their word is not law, and neither is the word of a part timer. Rodent is the boss here, it's his SG.

This is interesting. I read an article here at CivFans that clearly explained that you are better off road-ing first and then improving. I'll go look that up but I am afraid that it was in a Succession Game and I may never find it now. I do admit that that article just fed my biases as I like to have my empires roaded first and foremost but it was very compelling when I read it. It is about the length of time you get no benefit when you improve first.

Lurker:

The call on roads or improvement on a given tile is not just is it early in the game or not. It is what do I need now and what can I do now. Do I need to irrigate for the food on this tile or do I prefer to get the extra gold first? Maybe I am about to get a unit that could use the road to save movement, so that plus the gold is better right now.

Lurker:
darski, don't know if you played #2 out or not, but I played out to around 1500AD. I had removed all from the continent, but no shipping yet to invade. It is quite slow with only 1 move units.

Anyway if you want a screen of the game, let me know. Best to open a new thread and I will post it there. General forum is fine.

I would love to see some screenies from later in start 2. Another thread would be great.

I didn't play that one further but I did play Start 1 for a good bit. That wasn't a bad start - challenging but I got a good bit of land for all that and found everyone with my 3 move curragh.

 Oh No!!!

We fell out of the top ten posting games!!!

Just a quick :bump: to keep us visible.
