Role Play Challenge: Honest Abe Loves NY!

Mine every hill in your culture to get some chance of a resource pop. I don't think it is limited to the BFC.

It is limited to the BFC. In fact, you have to work the mine in order to get a chance at metals.

This is correct. One reason I was willing to sacrifice the forrested hill for a mine.

Forrests outside the BFC can help with rushing wonders though.

Looks okay, I would not bother with the silk, you settled on one and the 2 specialists will be better then a few gpt in trade.

My main question is why did you research sailing and construction? Sailing is beyond useless, and the AI loves construction. Instead I would have grabbed drama for globe. I probably would have saved the artist to do an anarchy free switch into caste + pacifism + bureaucracy, go to civil service and beeline edu... even in OCC I would consider a bulb for philo/1 or 2 for edu and 1 or 2 for SM in order to go lib - biology which is my preferred OCC play.

More at your tech path

You did:
BW/writing/pottery/sailing/IW/Aesthetics/Polytheism/Literature/Music/Construction
pottery before writing would have given you an additional discount and at the time you were building pyramids so its not like it let you get an early library. Sailing!?, IW?! you have horses, you can trade for IW really easily, Aesthetics-poly-lit is solid, music is good, but if you not wasted time on sailing-IW you could have gone drama-music for globe and additional discount on music, construction makes no sense, construction is easy to trade for, COL is good trade bait and on way to CS which is one of most important OCC techs.

Also I am surprised you did not go for oracle. In nearly all OCC games I build the oracle because it is cheap, I have free hammers because no settlers, and it can allow for some pretty fun slingshots(pulled off an education slingshot in 500 B.C. once on emperor when messing around, I would recommend CS however)

I don't that many OCCs so I may not be optimizing the best tech rates. But some of my rational

1) Sailing: we are on a river and can get a trade route via the sea if not warships. As I did not really know where everyone was, this was the fastest and most efficient way to try and get some trade going.

2) Construction: I had yet to get Buddhism I believe and did not trust Boudica/Hannibal at the time. Setting up a few choke points with catapults seamed like the most prudent thing to do since we did not have iron, which elads me to

3) Iron Working: Again as a purely defensive as I did not know Boudica's'Hannibal's intentions .

Regarding the Globe, I do realize the need for it in a OCC and it's on my to do list. But given the bonus's we got to happiness it never seamed pressing. we are more limited right now on health I think rather than happiness. However, trading off my silk once I had the globe did not dawn on me, again another lack of enough OCC experience.

Reagrding the Oracle, I was desperate for the Pyramids and knew that it would take a very long time on Marathon and I did not have that much time for defensive units. After the pyramids I would have been willing but it already fell. So representation versus free tech, I thought representation was the better choice.

Hm... This is one of those few situations in CivIV where I would actually consider the creation of forts. The land-routes to your 'semi-attached-island' are quite small, and could easily be set up into extremely defensible positions if you really had to. Hopefully we can break Asoka's borders with the next pop, but there's always the possibility that he'll start counter-producing culture in the iron city, at which point aggressive cultural pursuit might be needed. I think getting hold of that iron would be a major boon in terms of self-defense.

I agree pyramids > representation, but Sailing for trade routes? This is OCC an early game 1 or 2 commerce trade route is negligible.

Oracle would have been good earlier, I agree now you had no chance and Oracle was the right call.

Paranoia is okay and all but the doubled up paranoia is idk questionable, but this is Monarch so you will be fine.

Just so you don't worry about it, you have no chance of losing that iron. The only way that Asoka could have kept you from getting it would have been to settle on top of it and station enough troops there so that the city wouldn't flip. It's just near impossible for a border city to compete with a wonder spamming capital. You will have the iron a few turns after the 4th border pop, which should be happening pretty soon I think. Definitely in plenty of time to build cuirassiers or cannons or whatever.

Nicely done so far, though might want to strengthen those choke points; after all, Hannibal and Boudica might think you're too good a target to pass up.

Build forts on the forested silks, that way you get the silk happiness and trade value and don't have to cut the forests. Plus, they make great defensive plots which are useful in OCC.

Also, don't forget that you can chop forests outside your BFC for hammers and with well placed chops, they might grow back. Also, cut those jungles to your south to let more forests grow outside your BFC.

good suggestion with the forts, I can use the resource for trade at least until Scientific Method or Replaceable Parts.

Honest Abe Loves NY: Part III

A very peaceful and production segment here. I hope everyone does not mind too many trade screenshots becaus ethat's alot of what we have.

First our techpath: Metal Casting/Code of Laws/Civil Service/Machinery/Fuedlaism/Drama/Paper/Education/Liberalism/start economics

That was ALOT!

Once we got MC we made this trade

AbeC0000.jpg

And after Civil Service we changed civics

AbeC0001.jpg

Between OR and CASTE we have both Wang and Ramesses pleased with us even without open borders and having a different religion.

We fired off another trade with Asoka

AbeC0002.jpg

And soon we discover Boudica has gotten herself a vassal.

AbeC0004.jpg

He is a different religion so I play the Diplomacy game cautiously and NOT open borders.

However, making tech trades does not affect diplomacy so

AbeC0005.jpg

And a few more trades

AbeC0006.jpg

AbeC0007.jpg

So where does this get us, post paper

AbeC0009.jpg

We start the pricey Education and it looks like clear sailing to liberalism.

we knock downa GE wonder.

AbeC0010.jpg

And as suggested before, I built the theater and Globe Theater sooner than later.

AbeC0011.jpg

So we traded off our silk for health resources.

Some more fillin trades

AbeC0012.jpg

Once we were within 10 turns of teching liberalism, I checked techs

AbeC0014.jpg

And decided it was time start unloading education

AbeC0015.jpg

AbeC0016.jpg

Wang gave us a map which shows

AbeC0017.jpg

OK, looks like Hyuana if the last AI. Hopefully he's considered a heathen and not traded with.

We drop down a Great Prophet Wonder

AbeC0018.jpg

Our Great New York is swimming with Great Scientists/Engineers/Prophets. No Great Artists except the freebie from Music.

One last education trade

AbeC0019.jpg

And on the verge of Liberalism

To Be Continued..................

Honest Abe Loves NY: Part III

SO we were the first to liberalism, and the choices

AbeC0020.jpg

Now Hannibal is cautious as he has adopted Free Religion due to the schwan Paya and Boudica "Has Enough on Her Hands" (Oh Boy), so I was sorely tempted to take Military Tradition (the Ais always overpay for it) for a defensive pact with Asoka, but figured that would be suicide.

So I opted for Astonomy and access to the Observatory.

We then began our Liberalism fire sale

AbeC0021.jpg

AbeC0022.jpg

So we are teching economics hoping to nab the free Great Merchant, and saved here

TEch

AbeC0023.jpg

Pretty danged good here! and we still have Oxford to finish and an observatory.

Grand old New York.

AbeC0024.jpg

The Glance Screen

AbeC0025.jpg

And Demographics

AbeC0026.jpg

100% Approval Rating for New York! what a town!

SO I think we are doing well if you ignore the dismal power numbers we have. We plan to win the world over with our grand personality and Spectacular city! At least until rifles, which leads me to ask

Do we get gunpowder after Economics????

The biggest concern is Boudica's Intentions () which could cripple our diplomacy if whe goes after Hannibal.

Was it really necessary to trade Education away?

Does the Observatory really make up for the expensive tech price?

Directly I got Nationalism, Engineering, Guilds and 630 gold. Indirectly (through Guilds) I got Printing Press. Seams like a good haul for Education.

Astronomy is great trade bait (The Ais love it) plus it gives them somewhere to bring their armies (other than NY!). And yes, I found in OCC's a +25% boost in science is worth it.

FYI - You double-posted the glance screen instead of the glance and the demographics.

Don't worry about Boudica. She doesn't declare at pleased.
Actually nobody on this map declares at pleased, so you are in a pretty darn strong diplo position.

That is good to know. I never keep straight all the leader who declare when.
