Role Play CHallenge: Joao the Restless

OT: What you would really want is some kind of resource-specific factories that create gold, hapiness, heatlh and/or production if the resource is available, a bit like power plants or corporations but of smaller scale and more focussed on the hapiness part. That way, the home city can be boosted by building all those factories based on luxuries imported from the colonies. Eg sugar refineries, cigar makers, coffee roasters, etc. Maybe I will look into some mod-making this summer, would be my first :-)

Update coming. We are doing extremely well now, as we teched off what we needed adopted a critical DP at a critical time, got involved in some simples wars, made some great trades to cathup BIG time in tech.

I believe we are now on the Brink of Independence, the Brazilian people will not wait any longer, they look simply for ONE MORE GREAT PERSON to lead them!!!!!!

The Segment is long so it will take a bit of time to post it (as well as remember)!

One comment, regarding Sigg, yes military was a major concern. I swapped civic again to theocracy which couples with Buddhism got Justinian and Sal Friendly which saved the Odl world from a Zulu massacre. THe cottages are needed evils so we can have those amazing towns in the New world!!!!

Joao the Restless: Part V

The Portugese people are tingling with the feeling of Independence. They smell it in the air, see it across the ocean, hear it on the shores. The Brazilians have matured, they have grown, they are a new people, ready for self determination. The time is near, all they need is one more voice, one more sign, one more majestic leader, just one more Great Person!!!!!

A very good round, we are now ready for independence but I will wait until the next segment to actually do this. But how did we get to this moment, with such a dismal economy and primative colony??? Let's see

Techpath this segment: Astronomy/Constitution/Corporation/Democracy/Scientific Method/Communism. These simple techs led to an avalanche of many other techs from different leaders. The other key to this segment was stronge diplomacy.

First, a simple trade with one of the more backwards free leaders.

JoaoF0000.jpg

We screwed arround with civics again, adoptedin OR and mercantilism. We definitely needed Buddhism, that was a mistake before dropping out of it.

And if you want a good reason why Joao wants to leave the old World

JoaoF0001.jpg

Enough said.

For a spun off colony, Musa was very valuable to us. Nice considering we went to war against him several times and he hates our guts. Still old MM loves a trade.

JoaoF0002.jpg

Greta, we can build crussairs. Never built one!

Finally, the defining moment of this game.

JoaoF0003.jpg

We ran ALOT of scientists and built alot of beakers, especially the old world.

So here is a view of who needs astronomy

JoaoF0004.jpg

OK, first the Dog Mali

JoaoF0005.jpg

Fantastic, astronomy and economics which opens up the UB!

We then adopted Free Market and theocracy.

JoaoF0006.jpg

Now, notice some interesting diplomacy and DPs here. With our new theocracy tech, we are befriending both Justinian and Saladin.

JoaoF0007.jpg

We decide to get DPs with Sal and Justinian, which was just in time

JoaoF0008.jpg

Because.........

JoaoF0009.jpg

I would like to tell you I saw a stack heading my way and did a prident thing. I would like to tell you the Dps pushed Shaka over the edge. But I will honest, this was just plain damned luck!!!!!

JoaoF0010.jpg

Maybe Shaka could push arround Victoria a bit, but going against those two is a different matter. That stack headign towards us (and it wasn't that big) turned arround and attacked Saladin. We never actaully fought anyone, but we did a lot of cheering for our big stronge allies!!!!

Soon Victoria joined in the fray.

JoaoF0011.jpg

Shaka got creamed and vassaled to someone (I believe Justinian). Sal and Justinian spent a long time warring against MM and HC, we declared peace against both (got about 150 gold together), and rejoined hte fight against MM at Sal's request (Man I love those Ararbs and Byzantines).

In the meantime we are teching/building/ and preparing for the next settlement phase of the new world.

We got a very nice random event

JoaoF0012.jpg

+ 1 gold per harbor, yeah we'll take that.

We then got another GP from Lisbon.

JoaoF0015.jpg

Another 3900 gold trade mission. These GMs saved this game!!!

And MM being the tech whore he is.

JoaoF0016.jpg

And once peace was finally declared, we adopted those DPs just in case the English lady decided to try anything with us.

JoaoF0017.jpg

The achilles heal of this DP project is if Sal and Justinian ever went to war with each other, but I think this extremely unlikely!!!!

And some more techs from old MM

JoaoF0018.jpg

This guy is just incredible. We went to war twice with him and he still trades us all this good stuff!!!!

We also made a trade for more gold.

JoaoF0019.jpg

To be continued..................

Well done! I can't wait to see the write-up. You were overly pessimistic in your previous posts about the situation.

This is such a great idea for a scenario, since there are several strategies that work well and they yield completely different games in the end. We got really lucky with the map as well -- almost perfect for this.

THe cottages are needed evils so we can have those amazing towns in the New world!!!!
I have nothing against cottages ;-). What I meant was that if you have a city with no food resources, you should start with a farm or two to grow the city quickly and then switch to cottages. If you build 3-4 cottages and no farms, then it will take ages until the city can finally work them. So there's no point to that.

Regarding the military: No doubt that there was need for that, and after all you have plenty of cities in the old world that can produce units. I was just wondering why you actually build walls, and CASTLES even in the new world. That was so much wasted hammers you could have used on useful infrastructure instead.

Joao the Restless: Part VI continued

Where were we???

Here we land a settling party to claim alot of that unclaimed internal lands!!!

JoaoF0020.jpg

With Communism a few turns away we are not concerned about over expanding now. The paln is to settle several cities, then build some more advanced military and take the remaining barb cities next segment.

And here we got the best random event in the game.

JoaoF0021.jpg

-25% inflation? You bet!!!!!

Our distributed cities so far, one more settler is on his way.

JoaoF0022.jpg

Changing tech yet again,

JoaoF0023.jpg

THIS time we opt for US. Time to world on a stringe CE game in the new world!!!!! And the new capital definitely could use the hammers.

Now, here is an incredible avalanche of techs coming off of communism.

JoaoF0024.jpg

Netx turn

JoaoF0025.jpg

Next turn

JoaoF0026.jpg

Next turn

JoaoF0027.jpg

Oh Baby, thats communism for biology/physics/replaceable part/rifling

I saved here, a look at the full techs now

JoaoF0028.jpg

Doing very nicely now!!!! And we can defend ourselves with rifles and cavalry!!!!

We still have our DP, and as you cna see another minor war has broken out

JoaoF0029.jpg

The world's alot more peaceful with Shaka and Toku vassaled!!!

OK, a view of North America

JoaoF0030.jpg

Of central America

JoaoF0031.jpg

And of course South America

JoaoF0032.jpg

The archaic old World

JoaoF0033.jpg

And our cities state

JoaoF0034.jpg

Those old world cities are still productive, but we now have the urge to cast them off. Tiem to flex our Brazilain muscles and show the world just who we are!!!!

So the plan is to military and settler spam. Take those final Barb cities.

We have a constitution, we have demaocracy, we have the power of state property, and military knowledge.

THE TIME FOR INDEPENDENCE IS AT HAND!!!!

Walls and castles were build for 1 reason alone. Trade routes until we could get economics!!!

OK, I completely forgot about the additional trade route from the castle. I'm still not convinced that it was worth the hammers, but at least they served some purpose :p.

BTW you're going great now. Leave the forests around Braga, you can make an Über-National-Park there! I founded a National-Park-Capital in a similar location, which grew to size 26, working all tiles, AND running about 12 specialists, AND still growing, AND no  or  faces at all ;-). Usually you don't have the opportunity for such a good national park because there simply won't be enough forests left in a prime location, but in this case all is different. So you should seize the opportunity and resist the urge to fell trees for quick hammers (I built lumbermills+railroad, then later replaced them with Forest Preserves). Second National Wonder in this city should be the National Epic of course. You even have an irrigateable grassland corn to boost quick growth.

You have Biology already so you can build the National Park.

FWIW here's the city screen of my National Park:

and the position on the map (it's the city in the middle, a bit to the north of where you built Braga, so I wouldn't have the unworkable mountains in the BFC):

Looking at an older screenshot I realized that I founded the new capital in my first shadow game in exactly the spot you picked for Braga ;).

Yeah, they finally started settling the northwestern end of the continent. But Mad has the vast majority of it.

Yeah, they finally started settling the northwestern end of the continent. But Mad has the vast majority of it.
North-west America has two decent spots, but since Mad has most of the south and the best spots in the north as well it's not really a problem that the AI has cities there. Some care needs to be taken with regards to defense though (in a war Toku can easily take a border city or steal workers if not properly defended).

In my second installment of the game I only had the north, I left the entire south to the AI. That was OK. So I think Mad is in a terrific position now to take over the game/world/space :-).

Update coming Folks. Joao the Brazilian, yes you read right, is quickly developing the new world. As always there are a few issues to deal with

1) The game will go very slow, as my computer is slowing up alot with the large map and all of the AIs present due to colonies being spun off. Anyone willing to rectify this by donating a brand new top notch Dell Computer to the Brazilian cause is greatly appreciated.

2) Justinian is turning into a monster, and looks to be heading towards a cultural victory eventually, but not yet.

3) Noone is willing to trade tech with us since we spun off the old world (bet you all are dying to find out who it was!), so we are going slow.

Joao the Brazilian: Part VII

INDEPENDENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What more can I say! The round is mostly about spinning off the old world, and building teh new! The biggest issue was, what to do with all this land in the new world, as we are far behind in cottaging. THe answer I think is to become a production powerhouse!!! THe long term goal is to tech towards industrialism for tanks, and military supremacy because we may need that. IF it is possible to win this peacefully via a space launch, that is my preferred method of victory here. Culture is out. And diplomacy is always an option HOWEVER, given the friendship of Sal and Justinian that is NOT an assured path to victory, let alone getting the UN Charimanship. SO will refrain from MAss Media.

SO onto the game!!!

First, our techpath: Steam Power/Assembly Line/Steel. I am thinking military predominantly, as well as production! While slow at first, we are teching very well and the old world has an abundance of nice resources that we traded off.

First thing is we set all the Old World cities to produce riflemen so we could take them with us and take those final Barb cities, before an AI does. We also popped our last GP (the new world will take a very longtime until the next, although there is a plan there).

JoaoG0000.jpg

Not what we wanted! However, He may have been more valuable than any other GP. Rather than shoot of a Golden Age, we took him to the new world, along with alot of rifles. Those old Carracks are very nice indeed.

After upgrading a few muskets in the New world we went after one of the Barb cities.

JoaoG0001.jpg

Here is our loaded Carrack fleet.

JoaoG0002.jpg

And the captured Babr city.

JoaoG0003.jpg

With state property, costs per city is arround 5-6 gold. Not worth the hammers right now for courthouses as markets/grocers/banks get us more raw gold than courthouses.

Finally the view of our cities

JoaoG0004.jpg

The time has come

JoaoG0005.jpg

INDEPENDENCE!!!! Mush earlier than the 1776 deadline, but the time was right. This moment just could not be delayed any longer!!!!

I sort of expected Isabella as the head of the old world Colony, but I was pleased to get.

JoaoG0006.jpg

FDR!!!! What historical Irony!!!!

I spent a long time readjusting resource trades and setting up new one with FDR. Best yet, there is not ill-will from my Buddhist buddies. Fantastic!!!

Now back to business, Independence is great but this great Country of Brazil will die if work is not done. First of all those remaining Barbs

JoaoG0007.jpg

JoaoG0008.jpg

Barb city came essentially self sufficient and it's own worker!

The next is this northern Barb city.

JoaoG0009.jpg

This one came with all the workers I need, about 8!

JoaoG0010.jpg

Essentially another self-sufficient city.

AT this time things got interesting, as Saladin DoWed on the British lady, who foolishly opted for Taoism as the state religion.

JoaoG0011.jpg

We still have a DP with Justinian, so we mind our won business. We got a slight diplo penalty for not going to war for Sal, but the trades from Victopria is not easy to cast off right now. We shall NOT get involved in those wars of the Old world, at least until we are stronger than the old world.

As we apporach the last Barb city, note there are alot of OLD world AIs with cities arround here.

JoaoG0012.jpg

We take it easily.

JoaoG0013.jpg

And Kaboom!

JoaoG0015.jpg

Yes, we dropped our culture Bomb right in the middle of those AIs. Too bad Brennus and Toku are busy in a war, they cannot chase us out. And we have time to consolidate the city with culture and eventually infantry.

Also a quick look at the eastern coast of the new world.

JoaoG0016.jpg

And soon Justinian get's involved in the OLD world wars.

JoaoG0017.jpg

We stay out of it. Justinian never asked for help which is great. Soon Sal took peace and we re-established the DP with him. Eventually both Brennus and Toku broke away from Victoria and Victoria eventually capitulated to Justinian.

As of the save, the only free AIs are Saladin (friendly), Justinian (friendly), and Wang (Pleased). The dog Toku does not count and Bressun capitulated to Justinian. I have yet to play a game where either Sal or Justinian bolted out of a state religion, so we are pretty darned save. Unless of course we caught in a war between Sal and Justinian, so our DP get's canceled as soon as the Japanese Byzantine war ends.

I saved here, the status of the the game will follow.

Joao the Brazilian: Part VII continued

OK, The tech status

JoaoG0018.jpg

Too bad we cannot get a trade. Roosevelt is teching electricity so we shall pursue Railroad/combustion and hope old FDR make a trade with us.

The view of North America

JoaoG0019.jpg

And South America

JoaoG0020.jpg

Demographics

JoaoG0021.jpg

OK, #2 in production. We have to aim for number 1. With alow of watermills going up and getting science/gold building up I hope to up the GNP. Takes time though, but focuing on production such as forger/levees/factories will speed up production of those buildings.

Victory conditions
JoaoG0022.jpg

Very tight with Justinian going cultural.

And diplomacy

JoaoG0023.jpg

Only a matter of time before Toku capitulates oir dies.

So my plan is as follows

1) Aim for industrialism for tanks, followe dby flight

2) Continue to emphasize production, and fill in science/gold buildings.

3) Braga will eventually be a GP farm, if I can even get that far. Trying to get a forge/levee there, then pop the National Park and Epid to fuel massive GPs, hopefully varies. The plan is to get 3-6 GPs from there which can fuel several Golden Ages late in the game. If we can get Fusion first perhaps we can get a thrid GA.

Finally, we have to consider the unfortunate option that Justinina may be a Cultural threat and may need to be taken out. Constantinople is coastal but in the far north. Accessable by Marines, but NOT an easy target.

He only needs to raze one of the three cities. Which one doesn't matter, unless there's a fourth one that could catch up (I highly doubt that).

I would keep a close eye on Justin's culture levels, but since you're on such good terms with him it's very unlikely that he's going to attack you.

If you go for Space and find that Justin is about to win, you might have to weigh your nuclear options and backstab him.

I don't think a full-out war against him will be successful. He's got too many vassals and the new lands are still under heavy development. I also don't see a defining tech lead anytime soon that might make a war against him feasible.

I took a look...he has like seven cities all around 20k culture and rising

But if you raze Constantinople you'll probably be okay.

He needs 150,000 for cultural on marathon.

And any coastal city is always an easy target. Stacks of 50 units aren't uncommon on Marathon, but it's unlikely they'll be in his capital. The AI loves to leave them in random spots all over the place.

War between Saladin and Justinian is very possible. They might be friendly with each other, but the relations towards the other's vassals are also taken into account, and since those are averaged and rounded down, it's very likely that their relation with each other is now pleased or cautious.
