Role Play Challenge, TNG: Reincarnation of the Guptas

What was your tech path on that set? Need archers for barbs, and IW soon. Are you stlll skipping AH?

I do not recall as I tried to work them in the writeup. But I think it went

1 turn fishing (got the rest from the goody hut)
Polytheism
BW
sailing
Masonry
Monotheism

You just had to pick the map with all the pigs and sheep. Oh well - 3F grasslands aren't that bad anyways.

I think GLH would be useful. All your cities looks like you can fit them in coastal, and you have some off-shore islands.

I'd say switch to judaism to let the borders spread, then go back to Hinduism for OR while chopping the Great Lighthouse.

Also, I might be tempted to not bother too much with early defenses, and just spam warriors for fogbusting. You probably only need 5, maybe 6 of them. I'd still go for IW at some point to plan where to put a production city.

Religion, science and the fine art brought the Guptas to greatness:
Spoiler :
From Wikipedia:
The peace and prosperity created under leadership of Guptas enabled the pursuit of scientific and artistic endeavors. Historians place the Gupta dynasty alongside with the Han Dynasty, Tang Dynasty and Roman Empire as a model of a classical civilization. The time of the Gupta Empire is referred to by some scholars as the Golden Age of India in science, technology, engineering, art, dialectic, literature, logic, mathematics, astronomy, religion and philosophy.

My advice is build the three culture cities early, and let them focus on all things culture (sans artist specialists). Also voting for the Lighthouse: you control who gets passage and who must give their lives and goods to the Gupta empire.

Wkipedia would seem to advocate some focus on military prowess:
Spoiler :
From Wikipedia:
The Indian longbow was reputedly a powerful weapon capable of great range and penetration and provided an effective counter to invading horse archers. Iron shafts were used against armored elephants, and fire arrows were also part of the bowmen's arsenal. India historically has had a prominent reputation for its steel weapons. One of these was the steel bow. Due to its high tensility, the steel bow was capable of long range and penetration of exceptionally thick armor. These were less common weapons than the bamboo design and found in the hands of noblemen rather than in the ranks. Archers were frequently protected by infantry equipped with shields, javelins, and longswords.

The Guptas also had knowledge of siegecraft, catapults, and other sophisticated war machines.

The Guptas apparently showed little predilection for using horse archers, despite the fact these warriors were a main component in the ranks of their Scythian, Parthian, and Hepthalite (Huna) enemies. However, the Gupta armies were probably better disciplined. Able commanders like Samudragupta and Chandragupta II would have likely understood the need for combined armed tactics and proper logistical organization. Gupta military success likely stemmed from the concerted use of elephants, armored cavalry, and foot archers in tandem against both Hindu kingdoms and foreign armies invading from the Northwest. The Guptas also maintained a navy, allowing them to control regional waters.

Lastly, meditating on the greeks for a bit, it would seem they are destined to either become a part of the indian cultural sphere, or simply vanish in the process of resisting it.

All praise Ganesha - most benevolent Lord of Beginnings and Remover of Obstacles! Elephants would be a welcome blessing from the Gods and a sure sign of great things to come...

One final point I just thought of, the possibility of popping AH from a goody hut. If that happens I will simply just worldbuild the tech out.
I can appreciate not building any pastures, even taking it a step further and not building any roads on Cow tiles.

But I disagree with not researching AH at all. For example, there is some support (the Ramayana) for the use of horses (for chariots).

Ghatakacha Gupta: The Builder

Ghatakacha rises in the morning to great the Indian people as the new Gupta! He is not a man for speeches, in fact he is a man of few words preferring his building nature to take over.

He start by adopting the Judaist faith, as his predecessor predicted, in porder to pop the borders of Bombay. Once this was completeed, he switched to the builder civic

GB0000.jpg

And of course swapped back to Hinduism. He did notice the undiscovered Greeks had adopted Judaism, but since he never met them it was of little concern.

He did meet another leader

GB0001.jpg

And as rumour had it, the Japanese leader refused to offer good trade to the Indian empire

Meanwhile, Ghatakacha chose a prudent research path, looking to promote the Indian economy as well as defense: hunting/archery/priesthood/wheel/pottery/writing/iron working.

Before starting the great Wonder Building, Ghatachaka decided he needed one more city

GB0002.jpg

A poor food location, but so is the trials that the Indian people need to endure considering the lack of meat.

Delhi quickly built a temple to get a priest running, then started the great Lighthouse.

With a little chopping

GB0003.jpg

We also met another leader who was so rude we did not even keep his picture. The Buddhist Charlemagne crossed our pathes and there was little liking between Ghatacacha and Charlemagne!

And due to the priest specialist from the temple we managed to pop out a Great prophet before a Great Merchant from the Great Lighthouse which we used for

GB0004.jpg

So now the shrined holy city of Bombay can serve as an excellent second culture city.

We also got the marble quarried and hooked up which helped us to build

GB0005.jpg

So Delhi is solidly giving us GP and GM points exclusively!

So after Iron Working was discovered Gharachaka Gupta continued to try and build more thing himself. Infortunately he dropped dead from over exersion, leaving the Indian people at a momentary loss for what to research next

GB0006.jpg

Expecially since the latest view of the continent revealed.

GB0007.jpg

No iron and copper is a horrible location!

The latest Gupta did manage to help train another settler unit before that final eventful hammer stroke

GB0008.jpg

Seafood and some hills.

And we also popped a Great Merchant at the same time

GB0009.jpg

So here we are with no open borders (Charlemagne and Toku hate us), little land to work, and Great merchant with nowhere to send.

So questions

1) Techpath??? I am thinking Monarchy/Fuedalism for Longbows
2) Cities??? A few more on the continent or start settling off-shore
3) The Great Merchant??? Bulb Metal Casting and try for the Colossus???

Lookinmg for some good council for the next Gupta.

There is no doubt that the Colossus would help given the map - actually one of my absolute favorite combo's is the ToA, GLH & Col - that's some serious coin!
I would tech in the naval direction, any conflict will come via the sea.

SamudraGupta: The Protector

Sumadra hurries to Delhi after the sudden departure of GhatakachaGupta to lead the peopl. "We must not leave ourselves open to attack! Much need to be done, but first this Great Merchant who has appeared i our great city".

Wang Ashni is used to

GC0000.jpg

Between the need for triemes, a shot at the Colossus, and the ability of the forge is just too much to pass up here!

Samudra Gupta decided the first research agriculute as the Indian people cannot live exclusively from the. He then decides that India needs some military assistance, so we head towards Monarchy/Math/Fuedalism. After that more towatds the economy with Currency/Cpompass/Civil Service and finally literature/paper/music.

But first, after Monarchy we changed civics

GC0001.jpg

And soon we get another Great Merchant.

GC0002.jpg

The choices are settling or bulbing Code fo Laws. We opted to settle him, although in restrospect I probably should have saved a Great Merchant for possibly Sid'd, but there is plenty of time for that later.

At this point two things popped up that concerned Samudra, The Holy Romans are encroaching on our lands

GC0003.jpg

And we met another rival.

GC0004.jpg

We opened borders with pericles, the more civil of the Greek leaders, and proceeded to direct Bombay to build

GC0005.jpg

Greatly helping our economy even more! While our empire is still small at 4 cities we are able to exploit the slider at about 90% considering we have a settled GM and a shrine.

Did I say "A" shrine

GC0006.jpg

GC0007.jpg

I meant TWO shrines!

We finally were able to research

GC0008.jpg

And SamudraGupta changed civics to favor a strong military defense

GC0009.jpg

And started building CG longbows in two core cities as defense. Sumadra is not concerned with expelling the Holy Roman from out lands, let the city culture force him off.

NOW, alphabet became known to most of the world

GC0010.jpg

opening up many trades with the Greeks.

GC0011.jpg

I am trading techs exclusively with Pericles to keep all the new technology away from the Holy Romans and japanese, hoping suprtio techs will withstand the eventual Buddhist assault.

And here you can see the Indians expanded onto one of the islands, as well as locating a source of desperately needed metals.

GC0012.jpg

With all the focus on military and wonders we as very far behind in city settlement.

Another trade with Pericles.

GC0013.jpg

Our cities are running artists after adopting caste system, however we still popped out anouther

GC0015.jpg

Which we settled in Delhi.

The Gupta took much of his council's advice and built the Maori in the capital.

GC0016.jpg

We plan the National Epic here also and will need to find an efficient science city for Oxford.

The trades continue with Pericles.

GC0017.jpg

And FINALLY, the Guptas manage to acquire a source of metals for defense.

GC0018.jpg

Once we researched Literature, we could build the Great Library real fast

GC0019.jpg

Showing the GP production in our capital

GC0020.jpg

We tried for music but came up short in teh free Great Artist, but it eneded up being great trade fodder

GC0021.jpg

Once we have iron secured we at least can build maces and crossbows.

With the trade for a map we can see.

GC0022.jpg

Sury and Egypt are two other civilizations! And sury looks to be completely absorbing Egypt. I am hoping Charlemagne's "We have enough on our hands" is from a foreign war.

We saved here, researching Education and building the National Epic.

Demographics show

GC0023.jpg

Meh.

Cities

GC0024.jpg

And our empire

GC0025.jpg

SumadraGupta lived for a very long time, a Millnnium leaving Indian better defended than when he arrived, but not totally secured.

It is up to the next Gupta to bring more prosperity to the Indian people. Surely we need more culture producing buildings and perhaps three more cities. We do have at least 3 religions, perhaps we can get a few more!

This is going to be a hard game even with all the nice wonders in place. If somebody gets frisky you might get the shaft :) As always very entertaining mad.

RamaGupta: The Artisan!

Bell rang as the next Gupta was revealed to the Indian people. Glorious times are ahead, as Rama slowly walks down the roadway awaiting the arrival of so many Great People to do him honor!

And the first Great person was

GD0000.jpg

Rama sat back on his comfortable couch and ordered his scientists to research Education/Philosophy/Liberalism before starting on something more tangible, LIKE GUNPOWDER.

Meanwhile the Indian people were running around repeling Holy Romans, sinking Galleys with Triemes, and utilizing catapults to save their cities.

However, this did not stop Rama from greating the next Great Person

GD0001.jpg

Thespis who is sent off to culture bomb the third culture city!

GD0002.jpg

Thespis must have been blessed as he strolled right past the Holy Roman Army without a scratch.

Through much fighting and blood the Holy Roman army was thrown off all the Indian lands with cheering in the streets.

Of course Rama sees this as praise for his abilities (whatever they are???) and leaves to great his next Great Artist Amir Khuso

GD0003.jpg

Who he sends off to culture bomb the third city again!

Finally Charlemagne comes screaming around, looking for peace

GD0004.jpg

Rama Gupta agrees to part with Literature, a worthy tech and perhaps the Holy Romans can pick up some culture!

Rama immediately starts trading with Charlemagne

GD0005.jpg

As the Indians work towards Liberalism. Also rumours have it that some far off civilization called the Khmerians are claiming many Greek cities, but that is no concern for Rama.

The Great Scientist Hypartia is born and builds an Academy in Delhi.

Rama continues to spread his Indian people's knowledge all over the place

GD0007.jpg

GD0008.jpg

And finally he adjusts civics

GD0009.jpg

Let the great People flow from India!

GD0010.jpg

Zoraster? Start a Golden Age right away!!! What concern does the Indian people have, more trades

GD0011.jpg

And soon the glories of India produce

GD0012.jpg

First to Liberalism!!!!

And what to select?

Why printing Press of course, let the masses enjoy the writings of the Gupta's!

This calls for another civic change!

GD0014.jpg

Rama starts to dance in the street celebrating Indian greatness and another Great Artist!

GD0015.jpg

Culture flows from three major Indian cities!

GD0016.jpg

And is followed by

GD0017.jpg

AS a stacks of 8 galleys approach the Indian shores, RamaGupta decides it is time to leave and move on, but he has the utmost faith that the superior Indian Culture will overcome the military brute force of the Holy Romans.

The Indian people cry in the streets at the approaching Holy Romans, "fear not my people, another Gupta shall be here soon!" RamaGupta was delighted at the parting gift of rotting fruit and vegeatables thrown at him while he left "They shall miss me!"

The next Gupta, ChandraGupta opens the curtain of the palace to see

GD0018.jpg

And is greated at the window by

GD0019.jpg

Who tells the new Gupta that all cities have been directed to maximize the culture slider

GD0020.jpg

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!" But whether ChandraGupta was screaming in Strength or Fear the Indian people could not tell.

My friends, we are in a pickle! Old Mad Scientist certainly has a problem with these Guptas!

My friends, we are in a pickle! Old Mad Scientist certainly has a problem with these Guptas!

Maybe the Chandra Gupta can make an pragmatic approach to the problems India is facing ?
Such as researching AH just to see if there are horses somewhere ?
ziel.gif

He's the Gupta after all. And what worth is the praising of the Hindu Gods if there's no more India to do the worship ?

I mean, there's nothing in Hinduism regarding riding on horses as far as I know, noone speaks of eating them :D

Mad you know you've announced your first GP with picture of Charlemagne!

Looks like the culture is coming along well, millitary not so good from the looks of things. How are you planning to stop those caravels?

Mad you know you've announced your first GP with picture of Charlemagne!

Why yes I did, it's called sarcasm! Rama was a damned week Gupta.

As these Gupta games are getting rather dull, I think the next Gupta shall be doing some things, different! And perhaps, "Unethical" as far as Gupta philosophy and perhaps breaking a few CIV rules! A loss does not concern, but boredom does on these RPCs so 1 maniacal Gupta could fit here.

Still the Indians have gone this long without meat, that I will NOT break!

ChandraGupta: The Small and Inferior

Well my friends, after a long era of Great times, the Gupta's reign has come to an end!

Charlemagne's invasion was effectively repeled by having a satisfactory defense.

Meanwhile we met another leader

GE0000.jpg

Who is already ticked at us. Well, I guess these leaders just cannot apprciate good taste.

Ghandra Gupta manages to get peace for a modest cost

GE0003.jpg

And proceeded to ignore everything except culture. We culture bombed our third city like crazy. we built Cathedrals in our 2 main cities. We stayed out of world affairs. We pushed culture, culture, culture.

We say the world fight amongst itself

GE0006.jpg

And stayed in India and played bueatiful Music!

We started closing in on the Culture win

GE0009.jpg

Witha Great Artist heading towards the third city, it looked like we could stay under the radar and be ignored by the world that was jealous of our Glory.

Then

GE0010.jpg

Followed by

GE0011.jpg

The Indian Navy fought valiently as our lone Galley amanged to chip the paint off of the Khmerian Destroyers!

In basically 2 turns Delhi was assaulted and defended only by

GE0012.jpg

GhandraGupta lifted his war club against Babylonian Cavalry, Infantry, and Tanks all the while yealling at Hammurabi "Go away you very bad man or I will hit you. Don't get me mad or I will give you such a Punjabi punch!"

Hammurabi was none to impressed

GE0014.jpg

A view of what's left of the Gupta Empire

GE0015.jpg

Sadly, there were no more reincarnations of the Gupta. The great start from the Maharaja and Chatkupta were just plain wasted by the excesses of the later Gupta's. Somehow, that greta drive was never passed down!

So alas, a failed RPC, TNG. One of my worst played yet I fear, I apologize for my ineptitude and the laziness of the later Gupta's. Cold Steel of reality beat out Nirvana, go figure!

I have had enough of India and these Gupta's, A great Idea that played out very poorly.

Look the the next RPC, TNG. King Midas and the Golden Touch. An archeopolego map featuring Hannibal (never got to exploit his Cothon with the original RPC) where he has to control ALL the world's precious metals while ALWAYS maintaining a positive gold surplus!

Now if you all forgive me, I must go bow my head in shame. :suicide:

A valiant effort! But, yeah, it's starting to seem like the Guptas are a cursed lot. They were always kind of the booby prize in that old Avalon Hill game, History of the World, so I probably could have told you that in advance.

Gupta!!!!!!!!! After this failure you do not deserve to reincarnate ;) Next time use the cows. They may be holy but you still drink their milk right? :)

I was already afraid this would happen. But in this case too many people got frisky. Lovely sight though delhi defended by the warrior and attacked by destroyers. Haha.
