Role Play Challenge: William King of the Sea

Very well done on a map I know I would have trashed and never looked back, heh.

I love the contrast in styles of these follow-along games. You REALLY get a sense of the possibilities, seeing so many strategies played out to conclusion. Just reading these types of threads adds +2 to the difficulty level I am capable of playing on.

I've played through to Astronomy tech, have done virtually NO TECH TRADING. I'm following Justinian's stratergy *I think*, or many others, from Deity, and not trading with the AI's to slow them down.

MM is out right tech leader, with Cyrus behind.

First Difference, VIKINGS DESTROYED in BC's...

Aggressive settling of available land, but only one on 2nd main land mass, as its costing me 7 gold /turn, and going for Quality over quantity there. Optics in 820 AD, much slower...Astronomy in 1260, but most bar Cyrus, DON'T have Optics YET....hehehe

Suraveyman, is BEHIND...and DEAD.

My plan from here, is Build and East INdiaman, Take Ragnars old capital, (only city on land mass), build forbidden palace there, and make it Main land No 3. let MM build Versilies as he has 3 religions, should be going for a Cultural win, and will be easy meat come Grenadiers.

I didn't trade for the USELESS religion tech's (free religion or Nothing) why you did:confused:

I'm still yet to settle Iron, and have traded stone for 6 gold/ deer as only foriegn trade...Hammers from Citizen specialists when hit happy cap, only 1 GP farm as per rules.

Real struggle for hammers, researched all of Astronomy as I popped 2 Preists when I wanted Scientists...Oh well hammers and gold from settling.

continued on, Teched to Steel, and did a few back filling trades to get to Steam power, but changed civic's to Mercantilism, and as such, got specailists in all cities and realised too late...so I've fluffed it.

Numerous other mistakes, Shaka declared on me and took a city garrissioned with an archer only, Saladin, did the same just as I was shipping 2 Muskets to garrision the city.

I feel I've completely fluffed it, damm challanging, I'll have a 2nd go from Astronomy save, and do a few thing differently.

I feel my stratergy of not trading has slowed the AI's down, but double edged sword as its really slowed me too.

Trouble is, they still seem to trade amongst themselves, if not just outright gifting, as they all seem to get Astronomy at similar times and Banking as well.

Kudo's to you Mad Scientist, for playing as you did, but I've tried to do it all in long stints, so not really paying attention, really the games over and only challange is with my self.

I think you inadvertntly discovered one of the reasons I traded so many techs with Mansa. He laves techs and will do anything for them, even declare war. If I fed him all the techs while he was isolated I am superior to all other leaders except MM, and he will not declare war on me unless bribed with a tech from an AI, which he was far ahead,

Shaka on the other hand was the chief danger which is why I took him out before he had astonomy.

Sal was a concern I had all game, I was lucky to avoid him DoW on me.

Good luck, thanks for the feedback!

I was reading this one and wow, you had REALLY lousy land. And so did the AIs (Hammurabi was in really bad shape).

Kind of like how my games are  (I usually use settings recently to create incredibly sea heavy maps, in order to improve my naval game)

You should try another Archipelago, High Sea Level map sometime :D

P.S. You should have gone for the domination, you could have annihilated Ragnar.

I think this was the game that set me down my known path of playing anystart out. If I could win with this garbage heap of land, any map is generally winable.

What if you have astronomy before liberalism? Say assembaly line is open? :D

How do you get singleperson units?

I believe there is a setting in the graphics options that reduces the units to one unit in order to save memory. I played the pre-Julius games on an older Dell and was limited.
