Given the timing of Rome's UU; (it's going to be difficult to get offensive units to take out Rome before they can build Legions), the best things if Rome is a neighbor will be:

1. Do whatever it is that Rome's historical agenda wants you to do.

2. Avoid forward settling towards Rome

3. Build Walls in cities nearest to Rome so you have bombard; and later on an encampment in them.

Have you seen how buffed up Defender of the faith is? +10 near friendly cities, I think. Might be key on high difficulties. Spearman spam could stop the Legions.

I think I'll love this civ.
Lots of passive bonuses. let you think of other things more effectively. Like conquering civs.

Thumbs up from me. Not the most exotic bonuses to be sure, but it does help you through those laborious tasks you need to do everytime you found a city (monuments and roads) so you can more quickly specialise your city.

Legion looks a bit weak though. I think it needs some indirect promotions maybe a bonus from Great Generals, or a bonus to Great General points, healing faster in friendly territory, an attack bonus against cities or even just a bonus to XP from combat.

Didn't he hate large empires? And I guess it would make more sense in the game if he would hate other large empires. Sounds like he's just an ordinary bully in civvi who bullies the weak civs. (not that all small empires must be weak, though).

It's not really that much about the large empires part but as the "as most territory as posible part". IIRC my history clases, Trajan contained the drive for expansión, rennouncing to settle some of the lands he conquered en Dacia, in order to be able to control its borders.

Therefore I think "to control as much territory as posible" does not match his persona, and could be given to a previous Roman leader. In any case, for sure he would have "tries to be the one owning the most territory in the continents he has settled". Regarding the hate/love, I'd rather see him hating any civ in his border that is greater that 1/3 his empire size (potential menace), but getting well with smaller civs on his borders (you know, buffer states and so on)

By Trajan's time, the empire had moved on from having lots of buffer states (as it did under Augustus) to pretty much annexing all its former clients. Places that had been client kingdoms under Augustus, like Thracia, Mauretania, Judea, and Cappadocia, to name just a few, were all placed under direct imperial control in the mid-first century. Trajan himself continued this process by annexing the former client state of Nabatea.

Moreover, Trajan's campaigns in Dacia and Parthia were incredibly ambitious expansive endeavors, way beyond anything his immediate predecessors of any of his successors ever attempted. His successor Hadrian abandoned his Parthian conquests, seeing them (probably rightly) as entirely ungovernable.

Modern historians aren't sure about this, but it's quite possible that Trajan would have just kept on conquering eastward if a combination of rebellions and illness had not compelled him back west.

So I think the agenda makes perfect sense for him. He loved conquering and he loved expanding--pretty much for their own sake.

Legionary is really powerful as can be seen in Quill18 rome game.

Just being resourceless 40 strength swords are great. They only cost 110 production compared to the medieval pikemen who cost 200 production and also are more expensive to maintain.

Huh, I'm curious about that. The traditional historical interpretation is definitely that Hadrian reversed Trajan's policies, but just because it's traditional doesn't mean it's right. Do you know what the evidence for that claim is?

So the tooltip for Legion only says "Can build a Roman fort" but we know from dev livestream that they can also remove features (such as chop woods). I have watched every gameplay of Rome I could find today but have yet to see anyone actually try to use a Legion to build a road.

Has anyone seen this anywhere? Can we confirm road building is unlimited? If anyone can point me to a video of a legion building roads I would be very grateful.
