RPC, The Next Generation: King Midas and the Golden Touch

Played the next segment but too tired to post tonight. Suffice to say winning this game will certainly be a challenge and involve a massive armada.

So Mansa did research Rifling, after all? The AI's should really prioritize it more.

King Midas and the Golden Touch: Acquisition of the "other" metals!

Started the segment by researching Assembly Line/Railroad/Combustion/Industrialism/Radio

AND, adjusting civics

Given Sid's and representation Midas decided to move towards a representative form of government and allowed all types of specialists to be run. Gold, silver, and gems are indeed precious, but damned Modern Midas has a great appreciation for the gold from Corps!

Meanwhile Midas is frankly embarressed by the lack of iron in his kingdom especially after the Ethiopian wars.

So he loads up a few rifles

And goes after the easiest source

Sure Mansa is a concern, and by the end Hammurabi is also an issue. But Midas is interested in fast and easy expansion here.

And after many millenium, FINALLY

The Phrygians have access to iron.

Meanwhile we finished the Globe Theater for our major drafting city

With 2 settled GGs and theocracy we can draft 2 promotion units! We still need Sid's and a granery there, but by the end of the segment it is a drafting machine!

Midas got what he wanted and had no more use for the Ottomans land right now, even those few precious metals are insignificant compared with the massive gold from corps!

So

And soon after we researched

Giving us infantry and factories/power!

And our best chance at a GE this game came up good

We sent him off to the capital to wait for Combustion.

Midas readjusted the specialists a bit in Phrygia and the next GP was

OUTSTANDING! We can now found Jewelers!

And once we got Combustion

Looking at the corps screen

Midas is now much more interested in corps than the extra gold. Time consuming, but I think Phrygia needs to spread all those corps around real fast! The biggest problem is that the former Ethiopian lands lack courthouses and these corps are pretty expensive. Still, a small investment now for a BIG return later. Providing we keep the other leaders from Space or Culture wins.

However, all the precious metal resources and Corps will not help Phrygia without the eventual Nuclear weapons to defend or attack with, which requires that new green glowing metal Uranium!

And the easiest source is

Frankly, Pericles is not Alexander and is always a pushover, especially later in the game.

Unfortunately there is one unforseen problem.

Damned AP! We take the risk and simply vote NO rather than defy. It payed off and no peace was declared, but this AP is not a concern.

Sparta and Athens are alone on a single land mass making capture pretty easy.

And the loot

Midas is absolutely delighted to get the Jewish Shrine! 52 gold/turn! Gold baby, almost as good as cash!

Soon Athens fell

And believe it or not showing Phrygia with even more treasures

The Sistene Chapel, Spiral Minerat, and AP. AN uidea forms in Midas head that a alte game culture win may be possible here with all the culture producing Corps!

Midas is busy counting all his gold from this latest war and is more than willing to settle for peace

One lone gold resource??? Bah, it aint worth it, time to start acquiring some SERIOUS gold!

Saved here just as the next AP vote occurs

I do not know the results just yet!

OK, a peak at our lands

We have the largest amount of land in the game at this point.

Corps

Seriously inefficiently spread. But the important core is there with Phrygia's soon to build Wall Street. I think the next segment is radio/Mass media and a BIG push towards spreading Corps very agressively. Too bad I was very lazy building Monestaries, not sure is spreading more of our religions for late Cathedrals is possible without Organized Religion.

The tech situation

This I am not liking. If we nab Radio/Plastics, then COmputers are freed up to potentially lead us to the Internet and even the tech situation.

And victory conditions

OK, so where to go from here.

I know the RPC rules dictate we have to get all precious metal resources. But we are Midas here looking for gold, not the Drunken Viking Scum from that classic RPC needing all the booze.

So unless there is a tremendous rebellion, I plan to plan this game now to focus exclusively on the corps and perhaps spreading around religion. Play the culture/wealth angle, perhaps space, perhaps culture. That seams alot more fun angle here and of more interest. Of course I will continue to amass a monsterous army for possible island hopping against the more threatening civilizations out there (Mansa and Hammurabi) but I see no point in harassing Willem or Gilgamesh at this time unless that is needed for a domination win.

What I am saying now is I prefer to ride this game to a victory exploiting the corps and the gold benefits rather than stubbornly sticking to the "precious Metal Resource" requirement. I still plan to keep Phrygia at a positive gold output though.

The save will have to ait until later tonight.

I like the way you are going with this. Sounds entertaining.
BTW are you making good trades for gold?
Will you revolt to US later to make good use of the cashflow or use it to buy friends for a UN vic?

Riding this to a win by exploiting corps seems fitting for the Golden Emperor, methinks
I'd prefer an AC win. Surely there must be some shiny and perhaps totally new metals on other worlds ? :D

Smack down Mansa with artillery or cannons + infantry then do what you want... he is the only one who could potentially pose a threat, after he is gone you can do whatever role play aspects you want.

Okay, the greek gambit proved beneficial, although in hindsight you should should have taken them centuries ago :D

And the the artist showed up giving you access to Jewelers at Mass Media, which in turn gives you monopoly on gold, silver and gems. If you spread it to friendly AI (capital), they can't get Mining Corp, thus you control their gold trades! Getting Corp like Jeweler widely spread doesn't hurt you much, CreativeCon neither as there aren't too many stones and marbles - but spreading Sushi might be too beneficial for them.

I can't read 3.19 saves so I haven't looked, but it looks like you'll need the money for taking down Mansa, who running away with the techs. You need to quickly get the necessary buildings in place (buy them?), build an armada with bombers or what have you, and lots of executives from three corps.

Maybe adjust your army building so that you can mass upgrade inferior units to modern ones, just as you start the invasion, to hide your real power numbers. Timbuktu, Djenne, and the other western-most cities should be taken plus any vital wonders he may have elsewhere, peace then given, and the armada moved on to the next peace-keeping mission or back to spreading executive missionaries around the world.

Looking forward to seeing what comes up.

I'm digging the "New metals on new worlds" angle. After all, what are the riches of one world when there are entire galaxies' worth of wealth out there? I mean, surely there are other, richer planets out there whose emperors scoff at Midas' trifling fortune. Better to get to them first, "victory fleet" at the ready!

King Midas and the Golden Touch: The Happiness of Gold

Midas has discarded his robes and crown, adopting a business suit and a tweed derby hat. "Time to use this gold for the good of Phrygia my people. All this hard work, time to live the good life!"

Midas has decided to make a strong run for the late game Culture win while trying to play safe with a potential Space Race wins. Wasting so much gold on military expendatures are a waste, best to let the other leader keep their gold/silver/gem mines while we bolster our corporations.

The techpath was pretty simple: Radio/Mass Media/Plastics/Computers. More on the rest later.

At the start of the round we find

Pericles has found himself a nice sugar Daddy! OK, we are defintely finished with the Greeks.

And once we decided to start working the culture angle we adjusted civics

So we can spread our 2 main religions and get the +100% culture from FS. Most military was now produced exclusively out of the HE city.

After Mass Media we found someone beat us to the UN

Mansa got control of it which was essentially worthless.

we founded Jewelers giving us the big three corps

We tried for the Great Scientist but it was not to be.

However, we do have an enourmous an=mount of culture coming out of the Corp cities

Right now Culture looks more appealing than Space although we are shooting towards the internet even though Mansa has clearly beaten us to computers.

We now look at victory conditions

And see Mansa has an edge on us! well, a good culture race is certainly a challenbge here. Let's see if Midas can use that magic touch of his to beat old Mansa in an honest race. NO invasion force, looking to see if we can do this legitimately!

It took a while to readjust the GP production but we got locky with a low percentage Great Artist.

And started the Culture Bombing of the weaker of the three legondary cities.

This left us still behind Mansa who appears to have altered his slider a bit now.

At this point things changed, first we popped a Great Prophet from Zara's old capital

The confuscian shrine is tempting in this RPC, but that is old news! Midas is a modern man, and looks to start a golden age, especially with the Museum Wonder for 15 turns!

We now changed the slider and opted for caste system

70% slider provides sufficent happiness to overcome lack of emancipation. Caste means ALOT of artists (HELLO SID'S) in the three legondary cities, and remember we got the Sisten Chapel from Pericles.

Witht eh Golden Age full blast we have essentially caught up to Mansa in the Culture Race

We are getting the Cathedrals, broadcast towers, and Hermitage built also.

The horns of war break out

Showing Hammurabi is going after the weaklings. Essentially diplomacy involved giving into Gilgameshes demands as he was our only Military threat as Joaa was heading towards space and Mansa was wavering between space/culture (doing neither well!).

We then caught a Ethiopian Spy

Rather than take this as an act of war, we took a free Great Spy which coupled with another Great Prophet got us another 15 turns of golden age.

One very aggrevating thing this segment is notice how close we are to the internet, ONE TURN! Sure enough, Mansa got there one turn ahead of us, causing us to lose out on

A poor job on my part, the earlier revolt to OR yet I never spread Judaism to Phrygia!

At this point Mias says to screw Space and emphasize Culture

I believe Mansa just gave up the culture race and restarted the Space race which he was well behind Joao now.

Let's take another look at Phrygia and it's GP farm!

That's alot of gold and a strong GP farm! 11 artist specialists, each getting 3 beakers and 2 culture extra!

One thing I love about culture victory attempts are things like this

Finally got that old Barb city!

As our golden ages wond down, we had a clear edge over Mansa

So we just crusied along now to

I saved the game here for anyone who wants to pop the last turn!

But for Midas, it is time to finish this game

AH, a late game victory based on the corps!

Our demographics were

No surprise being #1 in GNP!

The final look at Midas

And the Corps

Just never got all the corps compeltely spread, but then again King Midas has plenty of time to continue that work!

So there you have it, a Corp based late-game culture win with a VERY strong gold income! Not what we planned from teh beginning but I think certainly mopre appropriate!

I'll take a little break before deciding the next RPC. I do have a few questions on some ideas that I posted in the RPC, TNG Summary so if you all can take a peak there I appreciate it.

Thanks to all for following this game! Glad we finally got a cuilture win after those disasterous Gupta games.

On the slide before the slide where you win, you're going minus 17 gold per turn...

Nice game, gz ;) That Internet was quite a bummer  And I don't think OR benefits projects so no mistake there (unless you had refrained from changing with anarchy but that would have hurt culture somewhat).

Bah, what was a few gold at that point to have a few less turns of clicking "Next Turn"!

That's the thing, when I swapped to FS I also went OR which cost 3 turns rather than 2. I also spent 1 turn to pump out a Jeweler executivefor the third culture city. I probably should have really beelined the internet as I knew it would be close.

Well, with 30 turns of Golden Age I'd have decided towards the culture angle, too :goodjob:

Nice one, Mad

Hehe nice ending and it shows the power of the corps. Great game as usual.
