RR17 -Team B

Blimey, settlers are expensive. What about settling 1NE of western iron, gets plain cows and a couple of sugar plantations.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. Play it safe.

i played 8 turns and will stop here because we have some choices to make!

i found another iron (see picture) and more interesting a barbarian city attached to it :crazyeye:
the spot is very decent in fact with in addition: gem, banana and clams :)

I went for a defensor (grenadier) in new york because the capital would need it but it could be used as invasion force...

I killed 3 forest for the settler and succed to built the settler in 8 turns (I was wrong in my calculations )

I build some watermills also.

the settler is ready to move.
but where?
I left the choice for next player :)

I Queued grenadier in washington for invasion of barbarian city but that need to be discussed.

It looks like I'm up.

Got it.

edit: a plan.

Trade maps with Roosevelt.

Settler goes west for iron-sugar spot. Workers connect new city by road.

Boston builds 2 workers before finishing library.

New York and Washington go rax>grens coz barb cities are probably cheapest and easiest way to expand.

GP due in 4, probably Great Eng. SoL?

I'm not sold on going for wonders here. We can capture them. This is conquest/dom. Our hammers should be focused on preparing for war. The rest is just fat, unless we were going for Space or something.

GE could possible help complete Steam (only use if it only part completes it). Otherwise we could save it to speed up Steel, which I think would be the next bulb option. Bulbing still has some value at this point and shaving turn off these key techs puts us on the warpath sooner.

If we are settling the iron city, I think that SE barb iron city is just a distraction. 4 cities should be enough now to get up an army and go conquer more cities - really 3 would be enough, we just need the iron. If we go DOM, we can take out that city later.

However, conquest may be a better option. Looks like we've met all but 1 AI, so one might be isolated off on an island or blocked currently but another AI.

At this point, army should consist of mainly Grens/Trebs (upgrade to cannons later) with a couple of rifles for support.

well, statue of liberty has its merits.
It's far to be be the worst wonder espestially with representation online.

for new city, why don't we settle on ivory?
it can catch horse, cow and sugar (and ivory obviously)

for barbarian city, i am for invasion of thoses city.
It is cheap, and provide experience to our troops.
lymond, why do you see we don't need them ? i don't get it. it is always better with more cities, no?

SoL= + 3 raw science per city, and two hammers with a forge. I'd say take that.
I think using grenadiers to take out the barb city will cost us 2-4 of them and is thus not worth the cost.
But more cities is indeed better. Even better though is when we take the AI cities, as they'll compete and the barbs won't.

How far are we going with research? Steam, Steel, Railroads, maybe Artillery. Do we really need (as opposed to 'nice to have') anything else?

Damn...I keep forgetting about the 50 turn rule and we are quite a ways from it. That will have a considerable effect on the war advantage with Grens/Cannons. I think we can at least wipe off one AI or two, but definitely need to consider the next era of warfare, so Infantry and Artillery should be targets.

I change my tune, might as well make use of our units in the meantime and go take the barb city. It's not a bad city. We can throw some trebs at it too. And we can fill in some cities - Cow/horse, Rice/Copper and maybe something over near that corn in the East if we beat Cathy to it.

I also say we go for SoL with GE since the extra research will be nice to get in more military techs.

lymond, why do you see we don't need them ? i don't get it. it is always better with more cities, no?

Well, it depends on if a 50 turn peace is enforced or not. If we could war from the start, I would already have several Grens and Trebs out the door and getting close to DOWing someone. I'd only settle a new city if I needed iron, but if I had iron I'd stick with 3 cities for now.

As for settling on ivory, I mentioned that, but it is much safer to settle next to the iron. It is highly probable that the blue AI will settle in our face and likely steal the iron from us if not in first ring. Also, I think we can get 2 good cities down there.

Sounds like my set is pretty much settled except if we're going for SoL we need to put a few turns into connecting copper and of course building SoL instead of grens. There is an outside chance of popping a GS instead of a GE which would go for scimeth bulb or academy I guess.

Played 4 turns so far, ready to settle iron city next turn. There is a complication: we got a GS instead of a GE. Could part bulb scimeth (which may become available in trade) or maybe academy in capital or even a golden age.

we will get a GE latter, the statue of copper is only delayed :)

for GS, no idea.

I would say an academy as a back up choice but the choice of the site of academy is not easy...
in a full flood plain city, academy was always golden...

Not sure on GS at the moment. Academy is ok, but maybe not as worthwhile at this stage. Possibly settling the GS is better. Would have to do the math. Saving for a golden Age is an interesting option though, considering anarchy will become an issue. Also, GA will get us more GPs faster.

I'm also thinking saving for a GA may be a good choice, but can live with any of the other options.

I'll save GS for a GA. Will finish set tomorrow (feeling a bit too tired to concentrate on micro).

Played 10 turns in total. Fairly uneventful.

Got GS instead of GE, waiting for a golden age.

Built some roads and watermills, iron is connected.

We've got 8 workers and 3 spare grens (3 more in 3 turns).

Diplo uneventful so far. We're 0 with everyone. We have OB with Wash, Cat and Roose. Lincoln is WE of Cat and HC.

Overall a bland round, no major progress, no major mistakes afaik.

is it me or we have 3 US leader + america in this map?
:)

for the barbarian city, don't forget to build 2 trebuchet ^^

Just a note to be careful about what workers do. Worker west of Boston is building a useless road when we have a lot of important improvements to make still. I may think we need another worker.

If we build research in Wash, NY and Boston every other turn, we will shave several turns off of Steam. The faster we get it the faster we can get up Levees in every city, which would be huge.

The more U.S. leaders the merrier, considering how bad they do on average. Lincoln is next to us and a peacenick :D

Sorry...just realized that I'm up. I will take a close look soon and formulate a bit of a plan

Nocho, you want to keep order in this here joint?
