RT-01 Triadic Warfare

And what was Rex doing, surely chatting about Sandy "décolleté" and watching football. Is this a punishment for france pitiful game against the swiss

What do you mean? First, I don't know who Sandy detoilet is.

Second, yes, I've watched a good bit of the World Cup this week--but as a favor to my "recent aquisition" third-world friends. I'm finding it quite compelling, thank you. But I've not watched France play. I mean, I am American after all.

Third, the last roster I posted clearly put you in front of Fox. Yell at that knucklehead, not me.

Fourth, Bede's in charge of punishment around here, not you. Phfffbbbttt!

Fifth, there is no point five.

Sixth, I'd love to get the AI to war with each other, but I don't think we have enough bribery material.

it turns into three hours of you looking over her shoulder to try to see the score while she blabbers endlessly about how her stupid friends never appreciate all she does for them and how Sandy in accounting makes more money because she's willing to show her cleavage to anyone with a penis and "manager" in his title
That is about the Sandy detoilet thingy. "Décolleté" is a "cut off" ? at least that is what babelfish says.
The cook is asleep and I needed someone to yell at now

The boys are referring to Sandy's "decolletage", meaning what shows between the buttons when she bends over to open the bottom drawer of the desk.

Of course if she is also wearing cutoffs the view from the cheap seats would be interesting too.

Never mind.

Don't fear grenadiers, as knights with Pinch promotions can deal with them. If they march out of the Indian cities with lots of cannon, then duck, but I don't see that happen.

If you want to build the Taj Mahal, not sure why, then build it anyplace but Nantucket. That city has the Heroic Epic and needs to build troops and more troops until the Indians are dead, dead and more dead.

And the only way to beat the RNG gods is with the big battalions.

Ahhh...thanks for the translation, Bede. I really had no idea what Blid was talking about.

Hilarious. Thank you.

So, are Blid and Fox permanently swapping places?

Rex Tyrannus => The SGer formerly known as Dan
Kikinit => Wishes he were a Socceroo
namliaM => Still with us despite Kikinit's best efforts
Bede => Wants a do-over
GreyFox => Just stole Blid's reservation
Blid => Up to give us new french words for naughty bits

Opps ... I did it again. Stealing other peopl's turn. It happens in almost every SG I'm in lately ... :p

Must be thinking of Fox03 ... somehow I keep thinking I'm after Bede.

Sorry, blid, but why didn't you say anything when I said I couldn't play the night before?

Re swapping places ... I don't mind .. ;p

--

Didn't check if Nanchuket has the Heroic Epic ... my bad. The Taj Mahal is hugely useful for a empire our size ... but if the next player deems it is not useful, then swap it out and wait to collect the gold (I think I've invested 2 turns into it). Also, in that case, make the trade with Cathy. She is the only one without Nationalism and is willing to trade us some useful techs.

It's not the grenie I am pissed abt, its the grenie plus pikeman. Yeah, I know knights will counter grenie and mace will counter pikes, but that doesn't work if you are on the offense. You either have to suicide lots of cats, or suicide some maces into the grenie to take out the pike, or suicide some knights into the pike to take out the grenie.

--

All of which means train lots of cats, at about a 2:1 for every other attacker.

Off topic 1 : Grey, I remebered too late that I played after Bede last set. No problem with the swap. I may steal your turnset this way :p

Off topic 2 : nice football going. Need to finish this before the second half starts. Too bad they are 10 vs 10 9 :(
@Rex : no need to be american to watch america play ;)

Pre-turn :

capital switched from Taj to military. Next prod city is Iron pigs. Taj takes 34 turns. Abandon project. This is way too long and almost all AI have nationalism by now. Taj is finished a few turns later by some AI so no regrets here

Fort Knox is not working the gold . Switch. We need windmills here too.

Ivory corn (barb city Parthian ) would have to wait. The number of cities maintenance is high. And the ivory camps are not very great tiles late game

Trade nationalism for Cathy :

01-NationalismTrade.jpg

I check to see if mercantilism will help. No, we are getting nice trade routes. Many All AI are running Free market  . We are really backward.

Turnset

War weariness is at +8 in capital. No starving yet. I order a bunch of knights and cats everywhere in my first turn

The batlle at Kohlapur went smoothly. A cat wins against pike at 8% chance. Lately, I've been very lucky with cats in SGs. The knights finish the job easily.

02-KolhapurFalls.jpg

Nearly all the tiles are still indian. I need to take this freaking capital

Couple workers are sent to build some roads south. We need to improve the network a bit for troops transport sake

Athens starts a theatre to help with WW. This city must be set to finance/science duties. It has a lot of matured cottages

When Chemistry is in, I changed my mind and set research to printing press insetad of education. There are two reasons for this. First, all AI has edu, only HC has Printing press. It may turn a nice trading material. And second, the printing press effect is immediate, after edu we need to build unis first to benefit from it. The prophet helped a good bit to get us started with PP

Next turns, troops are healing and new ones are transported south. Athens finishes its theatre and starts a bank

The next Indian city I went after was Bangalore, the new capital. 2 turns of bombing and in the third turn I suicide 3 cats and take it next without losses.
The screenie did not work here. The ex-indian cities can now breath, no more culture pressure

After the discovery of PP, the economy got a nice boost. But it is not enough to trade. I set the slider to 0 and in the next turn, I sold philo to Qin for 110g and traded PP for constituton with Liz.

05-LizTrade.jpg

I was hoping to make the scientist discover a bit of education, so that I can get it easily with PP and even get some money with it. But now that scientific method path is open, the scientist changed his mind. Should have burnt the scientist earlier  . Now, We need to do another couple of treasury funding to trade for education. I am setting the slider at 0 for that. Maybe, get education from Cathy and use PP then to bribe MM to war with HC or something

Asoka completed Versailles. I think I can see it in Calcutta. How nice of him

Haven't changed civics yet but we need to revolt now. In the north, I have switched to builder mode. We have already a good army. 2 or 3 cities should handle the reinforcements (keep the capital at military duty)
The other cities should turn to banks and next to unis. Organized religion may be the best option now
As for representation, I'll let you decide

EDIT :

Forgot to mention about the troops on the front-line. I think we can afford a 2 front attack.

Stack 1, heading to Delhi :

03-Stack1.jpg

Mini stack 2, direction Bombay. They should wait for the maces just behind them before going ahead

04-Stack2.jpg

More tropps to come :)

The 1600 AD save

A good thing about them Granny's is that they are relatively expensive. Both for upgrading and for building. This means .... Less defenders rebuild...
Bad news, if there is a defender.... Its a toughy...

I think right now Osaka is little more than clean up... Osaka build us Versailles... Nice... Once we capture it that is ... :) that is hoping that Versailles is not a once off (i.e. it is only applicable for the Civ that build it like Oracle and such)

Great turns, Blid.

Regarding the football, US v Italia was a fantastic game. ([pissed] at ref) I'm really getting drawn into the event. Naturally, I watched Ghana v Czech Republic, but I've been watching many of the games unless work gets in the way.

Anyhow, more analysis of the game to come later. I've got to get back to the kids. I think my 13 month old daughter has the television remote.

Good job taking the two northern indian cities.

I think we have a Prophet sleeping in the-city-where-man-has-long-XXXXX, so once delhi is once again ours, can waste the prohpet there.

Once we have taken Delhi, Asoka's prod focus will shift to his western cities. Becareful there. There is a route from his western city to come north via Nappa Valley. We are extremely lightly defended there.

Did you do anything to the barb nest up north-east?

-

@Grey : Sorry, it was not clear in my report but the Prophet was burnt to research Printing press. The capital cannot afford specialists at the moment because of WW but we should think of using some priests later to build the mahabodi. Thinking of that, I realize we already own the masjid el haram and have only three muslim cities. We need to designate a missionary factory somewhere.

You are right about Nappa Valley. We should send a couple grenies there.

I let the barb city alone. I didn't want to raze it and I wanted to delay the costs for later. It is a production city, not much room to cottages there. There is an interception mace north in case the barbs turn aggressive

Just making sure that Rex knows that he is up...
Just looking at the minimap... I think this may turn out to be a domination win afterall.... Osaka + HC and Mansa looks to be a good 2/3 of the map...

If we can bribe HC and Mansa to declare on eachother, mansa may just wipe out HC or revers. Then we only need to take on 1 of them...

Considering how many cites are allready Buddist having the Buddist shrine would really really help our economy...

Yeah, I'm up. Today's Father's Day here in the States. For some reason, that means I can't just play Civ all day. Look for my report in about 12 hours unless Fox wants to steal my turns, too.

Guys, first of all. Sorry about yesterday. I suppose you've all come to realize that my 12 hours is usually 36. Go ahead Fox, imagine whipping me with a cane or something.

Anyhow, I only played 6.5 turns because I think the group needs to make a decision. I've captured Delhi, Bombay, and Calcutta but war weariness is strangling us. 12 in the capital. 8 or 9 everywhere else. We have 0% science and are losing 25 gold per turn. The rest of Asoka's lands suck. I think we should sue for peace.

The problem there is that we'll always have the reunite with the homeland penalty unless Asoka is dead. But we won't be able to take out Asoka in anything under 20 turns.

For one thing, his four remaining cities are far spread. For another, I lost about twice the troops I should have. At one point, losing four consecutive 75% battles.

I've attached the save so far. I also pasted my unedited notes below. I have screenies, but I can either edit them in later, or make a new/better report. Sorry, I didn't know if you want me to finish my set or hand it off now.

EDIT I took out my notes and made a real report two posts down.

Hmmm ... we waited patiently for the time-dilated 12-hours, and I mustered all my Herculean effort to restrain from complaining ... and all we get is a half-done turnset and a no-screenie report?

(rex):whipped:
(rex):whipped:
(rex):whipped:

Now, back to the game.

I am inclined to finish off Asoka, raze the remaining cities to avoid upkeep costs, but we must rid ourselves the return-to-India penalty. Normally, I would sue for peace, extort techs, and re-declare 10 turns later. However, this being Triadic, that's not an option.

One thing to consider is the tech Asoka is willing to part for his continued existence. If it is lucrative enough, then perhaps we should go for peace. I don't think he can ever hope to recover from this war at this stage.

I do need to look at the save before I throw in my vote to the millon-dollar-question of To Peace or Not To Peace. Will do so tonight.

Fox wants screenies, I give screenies. I edited the above post to take my notes out. I edited them and added screenies. Here's the first 6+ turns. I can either play the rest or hand it off. I don't care which.

* * *

Okay, I have the game, now. Blid says to switch to Organized Religion and start building banks and such. Can do. So I revolt to Representation, Mercantilism, Caste System, and Organized Religion. Three turns of Anarchy.

Civics before:

civics_before.jpg

Civics after:

civics_after.jpg

Hit enter

Elizabeth complets Kong Miao on my first turn. Barb warriors (warriors?) appear near Napa Iron Pigs

warriors.jpg

Let's look at the military situation. Bombay is only defended by a longbow and a catapult. Main stack will take out Delhi. Small stack will do for Bombay. From there, both can meet up and take out Calcutta, the city with Versailles. Delhi only has one each of Musket, Mace, Longbow, and Pike. Sweet.

End of turn one

Again, IBT offers zero sign from Asoka. Either he's out of gas or he's waiting for one more massive strike. Is there any reason I shouldn't take out Delhi? I seem to remember having taken and lost it once already. Six cats take Delhi's defenses from 60% to 6%. But still, my best odds are about 39%. I can upgrade a grenny to pinch. Let's see.

Okay, upgrade the grenny to pinch and combat 2. He now has 75% odds. And of course, I lose. Bastard won 7 of 10 rounds.

So I next promote a knight to flanking 2 to try a withdrawl against the lone pike. And the plan pays off. Knight withdraws. Unfortunately, the pike is only hurt down to 4.1/6

Next, I promote a Knight to combat I, shock I to take on the mace at 71.7%. And lose! This RNG is not helping us, here. Wait a minute. The computer swapped on me. I didn't even notice that my shock-promoted knight wasn't fighting the mace, he went in against the longbow!!! Angry!!! But it was still 71.7% odds. I only won two of those rounds.

So I promote another knight to shock and the computer offers up the wounded pike at 72.8%. And lose again????

How 'bout we try 76% against the mace now? And lose at 76%???

And finally, four mop-up battles take the city. I keep it.

delhi.jpg

Over at Bombay, my three catapult take the city from 60 to 33%. But my two knights still have long odds. I'll wait a few here.

END of turn 2.

Okay, we come out of Anarchy and Mansa wants to rob us blind. Optics for Printing Press. First, what good is Optics on this map?

stupid_mansa.jpg

Okay, on the plus side, we can learn Education in 9 with just 0% science and all of our specialists. On the other, we're still at -8 per turn?

finances.jpg

Well, one of the problems is the 12 war weariness in the capital. Well, I think we're just plain screwed here. WW is astronomical. Around 8 or 9 WW in most of our main cities.

Neat. Now that we have Delhi, we can spy into all the other Indian cities. Calcutta is defended by a grenadier, musket, mace, and longbow. Jaipur is just a longbow and pike. Hyderabad is a crossbow, horse archer, and catapult. Etruscan has a longbow, pike, and cat. Karachi is longbow, pike, and cat.

Now that I look at it, we do not have a prophet in any of our cities. 33% of the world is budhist and we have no stinkin shrine in the holy city. So I take the (free) scientist in Nantucket and turn him into a priest.

A little MM takes Education up to 10 turns, but we're at +7 in gold

Over at Bombay, I promote a mace to cover and city raider to attempt an attack on Bombay's longbow after my three cats take down the city to 6%. He dies, but he was supposed to. Second mace and a knight clean up.

bombay.jpg

At this point, I'm thinking Calcutta, then peace.

I still don't know what to do with AlKhwarizimi (GS).

end of turn 3

Mansa demands that we cancel deals with the Chinese, IBT. Negative, Ghostrider. Also, IBT, Asoka has the stones to send two longbows and a settler up to Napa. I have four (I think) grennies already en route.

settler.jpg

(He would later settle precisely on the spot where you see him in the above screenie.)

End of turn 4

Lizzy adopts Representation IBT, so we no longer have the monopoly on constitution. Wait a minute, now everyone has it. I could have sworn we had a monopoly on that on my first turn. I should have paid better attention to the tech screen. Sorry.

Good god, we just dove to -22/turn at 0% science!

(How come when you capture an Indian worker, he slows down?)

End of turn five

Asoka has beefed up Calcutta's defense, but we have such overwhelming force, it won't matter.

IBT, HC adopts Emancipation. Just what we need. More reason for our citizens to be angry. Bangalore comes out of revolt with 23 angry. Thanks to cats, Calcutta's defense goes from 60 to 33. Won't attack this turn.

Two grennies arrive in Napa. They have 68 % against the new Indian town. With my luck this set, I decide not to attack. (I would later join them with a third and march down toward India's newest city.)

End of turn 6

At Calcutta, the cats take defense down to 6%. Asoka's got one garrison 2 musket that's giving us problems. Argh, game crash, again. But this time I had autosave set every turn. All I lost were a few build orders.

Again, my cats take Calcutta down to 6%. Time to suicide a cat or two. First cat lost every round, damaging all but the pesky musket. Cat 2 takes the musket down to 5 strenght. The city should be mop-up now.

Okay, not quite. Pinch and combat knight loses at 68%. Damn! Lose another 60% knight. And lose a combat 2 knight to a heavily hurt longbow. (At the beginning of this set, I lost four 75%+ battles in a row. Now I lost 68, 62, and 90-something all in a row. What is wrong with Civ4 Combat?)

Four real mop-ups and Calcutta is ours.
