Ruff03 - AW Middle Ages

I have some good news and some bad news. First the bad news ...

Our defenders in Bombay got down to less than 1 page a few times and I ended up moving all of the attack group (excluding cats) into the city.

I'm not sure that I agree ... :hmm: ... I think the good news would be that Bombay didn't fall on my turn! :D

The fall of Bombay was bad news.
But there's no time to mourn, let's take it back.

0:
Knight kills mace in Bmbay.
A catapult takes the city!
14.JPG

IBT:
A knight dies, but Bombay still stands.
1: Bombard the stack of doom outside Bombay to weaken it for now.

IBT: Bastards take Bombay again.
21.JPG

2: I realize we can't take it back soon, so I start building a defence in Dehli.

3: Silent before the storm

5: The enemy doesn't attack, but spreads out and pillages our land
31.JPG

6: Dehli is starting to starve

7: We have no Iron

8: We lose Madras
41.JPG

9: Dehli still stands after a massive attack.

10: Dehli barely stands, but how long?

It looks like I'm up. I wonder what the record is for the most cities lost during a single turnset ...

I won't be playing for another 24 hours if anyone would care to chime in with any suggestions ... hint hint ...

suggestions? Win! Do you want another one? Ok - anyone care to play again with ALWAYS WAR meaning everyone is at war with everyone?

I might be up for that, Everybody at war would be cool. How about a Medieval start, but with research and stuff turned on as usual?

And Conroe, I suggest taking Bombay back and chasing everybody out of our peninsula. Everything was so much easier when we only had that city to defend.

I'm actually suggesting a re-run of this game format with the following changes:
  • everyone at war with everyone
  • cottages available to build - more gold
  • removal of all GPs

ruff_hi said:

My initial thoughts are that this would make the variant too easy. Maybe it would be better to leave cottages out and put GP back in. That way the AI can kick off golden ages to give them a boost. Or, maybe we kick the difficulty up a notch to monarch or something.

Situation Assessment: The dam has been breached and we are about to be washed away by the flood waters. The only thing left to do is to die!

Our army consists of 20 Longbowmen, 1 Crossbowman, 1 Knight, and 4 Pikemen. Each of our 5 remaining cities is producing a Longbowman because our iron has been pillaged. The vast majority of our forces are in Delhi and it is under seige (and starving) at the moment.

Here is a screenshot of the power graph. It's hard to believe that we once had more troops than anybody ...

Ruff03_1918AD_Power.JPG

Objectives: Not lose on my turnset! :D To that end, I'm considering only playing 1 turn to get us back to an even number. :mischief:

Turn 0 - 1918AD: Many of our cities are being defended by unpromoted Longbowmen. I pass out City Garrison promotions to all eligible units. I also spend some of our gold to cash rush a Longbowman at Calcutta.

IBT: Tokugawa suicides a Catapult against Delhi. Then, his Knight kills our Pikeman. Meanwhile, Huayna Capac is content to do some pillaging, including our marble quarry.

Mansa Musa's suicide Catapult withdraws from combat. He then suicides a Pikeman. Caesar suicides 2 Catapults, 2 Knights, and a Crossbowman. The forces of Delhi remain victorious for one more turn.

Turn 1 - 1920AD: Delhi completes a Longbowman and starts another one. Likewise, Calcutta starts another Longbowman.

IBT: More attacks on Delhi with no losses. We did, however, lose a Longbowman to Capac's Knight in Calcutta. And then, of course, there was the requisite pillaging of our lands.

Turn 2 - 1921AD: Delhi completes another Longbowman. I'm not sure it is possible, but I'm going to try and send some reinforcements to Calcutta.

IBT: More attacks on Delhi. The attacks are fairly light, as the AI seems more intent on pillaging our lands than attacking our cities.

Turn 3 - 1922AD: Jute completes a Longbowman and starts another one.

IBT: A huge attack on Delhi, but the city holds with the loss of a lone Pikeman. Unfortunately, the Longbowman destined to reinforce Calcutta did not fare so well. He was slaughtered.

And, of course, much pillaging was done.

Turn 4 - 1923AD: I didn't realize it, but that pike that got killed was our medic! Hopefully, someone in Delhi will earn a promotion on the next battle so that we can get another medic installed.

IBT: Lahore is attacked by a lone Knight. Meanwhile, Delhis is hit with wave after wave after wave of attackers. It is absolutely unbelievable that the city is still standing. We lost at least half of the cities defenders while the remaining Longbowmen are bloodied and in bad shape.

Turn 5 - 1924AD: Lahore completes a Longbowman and starts another one. I pass out some promotions in Delhi, including a Combat I/Medic promotion to one of our Longbowman.

IBT: Delhi falls  ... All of our Workers were captured. I probably should have disbanded them last turn. But, (1) I didn't think about it until now, and (2) is there really a point?

We also lose a Longbowman in an attack on Bangalore.

Turn 6 - 1925AD: Calcutta completes a Longbowman and starts another one.

IBT: Much pillaging ...

Turn 7 - 1926AD: Jute completes a Longbowman and starts another one. I also cash rush a couple of Longbowmen.

IBT: Calcutta is attacked, but it holds.

Turn 8 - AD: Both Bangalore and Lahore complete Longbowmen.

IBT: Nothing but pillaging this time around ...

Turn 9 - 1928AD: Time to break out a  and celebrate the end of the war ...

IBT: The defenses of Calcutta have been reduced to 22%. Meanwhile, a couple of Knights suicide against Lahore.

Turn 10 - 1929AD: 1929 -- a year known for things going crash ...

Here's whats left:

Well, this is a surprise - I didn't expect this game to get back to me. Before I 'just press enter', lets do a recap ... the following is a list of the important units that we (and the other civs) could build. The first number is the number that we built. The second number is the number that we killed.

Maceman 30 119
Pikeman 23 66
Longbow 68 25
Crossbow 16 112
Catapult 22 238
Knight 47 172
Caravel 19 27

Look at how many cats came at us! Also the number of crossbows we needed to deal with. I would suggest that we keep this sort of info in mind if we play this variant again.

Ok, on with the fun. First I change my game options to include 'quick combat (defense)'

Ruff03-sc-006.jpg

That should speed the fun somewhat. I am actually sitting on the train home in the afternoon and, at the moment, I am still in the station waiting for the train to depart. I press enter and it is all over - the train hasn't even moved. Thanks all for a fun game. Anyone want to play again - we are now open to discussing this variant and taking suggestions on changes.

Possible Changes:
- Put cottages back
- Make it so that Always War means everyone is at war with everyone

Just to make it all nice and tidy ...
Ruff03-sc-007.jpg

I haven't posted the save - download munter's save and 'just hit enter' (TM)

How about the same type of game, but for a change of pace, let's make it industrial or modern. This time with everybody at war with everybody, and cottages in. Of course, I have no idea how much work making a mod like this is, so I'm very happy with a rematch at medieval times too.

Got a suggested unit mix? The one issue I have with modern is that those units are too powerful and defense rules the day. If you throw in bombers, then no attacking force can get close to any city.

An everyone always war game is based on not finding too many other civs too fast - that way limiting who you have to fight and leaving it up to the other civs to control each other.

For unit mix, I'm willing to try out anything really. I have all but zero experience with modern warfare so that's why I thought it might be a cool thing to try, but if don't think it'll work let's just go medieval again!
