That is what I thought when I read the write up, but the forest is still there in the pictures. Apparently a change in v1.61 (and a good one too).
 
That was an intense set of turns, with some bad news...

Our SLB has been slain:(

Bombay is still ours, but the AIs are keeping the pressure on. I had to move our SoD over to help defend though, despite winning the vast majority of battles, our LBs got worn down slowly, mainly through the hundreds of cats sent in. I assigned the SoD to group 3, so they are still separate from the main defenders.

And there's plenty more on their way over. The units East of Bombay are a Knight, and a XBow with a Maceman. They managed to slip past and pillage the road, so that needs to be rebuilt as soon as there's a worker and units free to defend. We also control the coast around Bangalore now, and I've held off Mansa's attempts to pillage the Fish so far. In total we killed 73 units, and lost 9, which I don't think is too bad considering that 2 or 3 of those units were Caravels, and the amount of collateral damage taken.

We still need more catapults and a few more LBs before we can get the SoD moving, and maybe some more Knights might be useful too.

I was beginning to think that dude was indestructible. I cannot believe he fell. If I read your autolog correctly, it looks like he managed to pick up his Drill II promotion before he died.

Further forces sneak past Bombay and a farm is pillaged, but I got it under control.
1: Kill a jap knight who tried to sneak past.
The next attack will be quite brutal. I feel safe enough with almost 40 defenders in Bombay, but there are at least 31 enemy units ready to attack next turn. I say at least, because there's no way of telling how many units there are in that stack.

I rush the longbow in Bombay just to be a bit more certain...


IBT: Good news. 14 killed, zero losses.
Not all that could attack did attack and those who did died.

I clean up our backyard, losing :( our level 4 knight.
Get ready for the next attack on bombay.

At least the japs are nice to our horses, and lets them play with their mothers.

Let's try it one more time. Move the SOD out of Bombay, heading for Russia.
IBT:
The SOD was attacked and to crossbows were killed.
5: I reinforce the Sod with units from Bombay. I also bring in two of the woodsman axes, since the SOD will be spending quite some time in the russian forests, and the Forest fort haven't seen much action anyway.

IBT: Only two units attack this round.

6: The SOD will travel these dangerous forests in Russian terrain all the way to the spot south of Moscow. That's when the city will be put under siege, and where the bombardments of the city walls take place.

IBT: One mace attacks our SOD and:eek: kills our crossbow.
That was probably lucky.

7: The SOD's progress is stopped by forces blocking the path through the forests. We wait.
IBT: We kill 7 units attacking our SOD, but loose a mace.

8: As our SOD moves into enemy lands, our financial situation plummets

I change away from the expensive civics Vassalage and organiced religion.

I MM every city for max commerse, and whip some markets, courthouses and grocers. Less population means less maintanance, and when the buildings are done, next turn, I think we'll be allright economically. When we raze Moscow, we should be back on our feet with gold up to our cheeks:)

Ok - so maybe taking the cottages out of an all war game wasn't the smartest decision I ever made.

It makes a challenge all right, but the AI will have the same problems as well.
Let's just try to make the best of it, by emphacizing commerce and keeping number of units to a minimum.
That last one being quite hard in an AW game ;)
 
Team - we have some options with this. Obviously we have to stop killing the AIs units (live units kill their economy). On the flip side, we cannot send our stack into enemy territory (kills our economy). So, we either have to reduce our number of units or take out their cities (or both). This will be hard and is probably getting harder.

I have managed to create a mod were 'Always War' means everyone (AI and human) are at war. In that way, it is everyone against everyone else. Do you want to keep playing this current game out, or flip to a new game with this new mod (and cottages back in)?

Now, I have not looked at a save, but ...

Munterpipe seems to think "we'll be allright" after his MM and whipping. Is our economy back to positive GNP? Enough to get our units off of strike and for us to take Moscow? We should be getting 100-200 gold for razing a city.

We are at -8 gpt at the moment, but when Ruff hits enter, two courthouses and two markets will be finished. That will make us going at aprox. 0 gpt.
A courthouse should be whipped in Bombay as well.
Moscow will be razed soon, and then we should be okay.
 
The good news … our attack squad took down Moscow! However, they got caught in the open advancing on St Petersburg. They are no more - however, they did fight to the very end - including our medic.


On the plus side, the people of Bombay love a good battle - here they are celebrating during the worst of it.


Finally, we popped a great artist - no idea how as I thought we had taken this out in the mod - in the back ground you can see a knight attacking our maces in the forest fort - every other attack was against the walls of Bombay.


From memory, we only lost cats while attacking and we didn't lose any unit in Bombay.

We lost our SOD after razing 1 city?!?!?!? :eek: This does not bode well for the home team ... I knew we would have to get it some reinforcements, but I would have thought we would be able to raze at least 3 or 4 cities ...

So, where do we go from here? I guess we need to start building another SOD. From those of you who got to actually play with the first SOD, where did we go wrong? Give us some good monday morning quarterbacking. Did we have the wrong unit mix? Wrong promotions? IIRC, we had something like 13 units dedicated to stack defense.
 
The Sod is gone?? The good news then will have to be that our economy is back on its feet. Nothing to do then, but rebuild another stack.
The artist came from the Heroic Epic, which gives 1 Gpp pr turn.

The SOD got caught in the open (no hill, forest, etc for defense) and taken down by multiple cat attacks. It was very nearly full strength - I think I only lost cats taking Moscow.
