Ruff05 - Team SG

Are things looking better? How is the trade route going?

Yes, things are looking better. There are a bunch of units in Moscow right now (6-7 I think), most of which are injured but they should heal up nicely as soon as we finish off the two remaining units of Isabella which are hanging out outside the capital. There are also a number of units heading over to defend Mecca so it is in no immediate danger. The trade routes are nearly done - in a few turns there should be roads connecting everyone (except Gandhi north to Saladin). I was able to put improvements back on most of the resources to the South after beating back some barbs, and those cities are looking good.

I really think the main thing we need is to regular research construction and metal casting and use the engineer on machinery so we can start building maces.

I have a look around the teams before I start for a quick position assessment. Construction is good (due in 2), Sally looks to be a bit stretched but will probably hold. He's the only one not hooked up to the trade network.

I think a big military build up and bring the war to Tokogawa or Isabella. Let's start.

A big Aztec stack is heading towards Gandhi, which was handled fairly easily.

Construction is in. Start Metal Casing and building catapults. I consider burning the GE for Metal Casing but hold off, thinking we can burn him for machinery later.

I set out an expeditionary stack out of Moscow and a smaller one out of Beijing. The Moscow stack gets wiped by a Spanish counter-stack, which continues onto Moscow. Elephants and Horse Archers.

Metal Casing comes in on the last turn. The GE burned 1/3 of it only.

The situation. Qin and Gandhi are currently fairly quiet (Although there are a few elephants roaming about near gandhi. Peter has 5 HAs and 4 elephants roaming around Moscow, pillaging madly. Sally has a couple of elephants doing the same. I don't think we're in danger in any of these cities but its setting us back with the pillaging.

We've got a few troops harassing a small Aztec city, an English one and a barb one.

We need to get Machinery in a hurry to get some sort of military advantage.

Got it!

Highly doubtful that I will get to play it today. Possibly tonight, not sure at the moment.

Other than Macemen, any other suggestions?

The other thing that will help is pikes (engineering) as at the moment the AI is purely sending horse archers and elephants.
I downloaded the save and had a look around. There are so many HAs and WEs wandering around, I'm wondering if we shouldn't try for Pikemen before Macemen. What does everybody think?

I also noticed that Gandhi is building an Aquaduct. I'm not really sure why, unless we intend to start on the Hanging Gardens. Do we really want a wonder right now? I don't recall any discussion about it.

  I actually wanted a colloseum for Gandhi for his happiness issues. Oops! It was on the last turn I think so change away.

As for Engineering/Machinery, probably depends how long they will each take. Spears and Maces combined will cope with Elephants/Horse Archers but obviously pikes would be much better.

Well, I didn't look at the numbers, but I'd say Machinery would be quicker because of the GE. OK, I guess I'll stay the course.

Actually - I think conroe is up

Sorry about the delay -- it has been an RL kind of day. :crazyeye: But, I am playing, as we speak.

To wet your appetites, here is the pregame show:

The inherited save reveals that things are not going well for the allies. The axis powers have laid seige to both Mecca and Moscow, as Ozbenno mentioned in his report. The barbarians are lending a hand in Mecca. Sally's newest city, Baghdad is about to be seiged by the barbarians, as well. Except for a lone barb sword, things are quite in Delhi. But, Gandhi's copper city of Bombay is being threatened by Monty. Beijing appears to be our only productive city at the moment. Save an English Archer and barbarian Warrior, the city is not being threatened. As Ozbenno noted, these cities are probably not in any danger of being lost any time soon.

It is apparent, however, that we are about to lose 2 Russian cities. I might be able to save one of them. Take a look at the undefended city of Novgorod below. Monty has a Jaguar closing in on the city, while Qin has an Archer in route to defend it. Both units are 2 tiles away. But, Qin has already had his turn 0 movement. The Archer will not make it to the city in time.

In St Petersburg, a barbarian Swordsman is 2 tiles away from attacking the lone Warrior defender. Since the city has population, I can whip an Archer in the city. Why not whip that Axeman that has already been started? Peter's source of iron has been pillaged. We will not be allowed to complete that axe.

Novgorod is definitely lost. St Petersburg has an outside chance. We'll just have to wait and see ...

Edit: Sorry for the continued delay. I got a couple of turns done before my phone started ringing off the hook. I should have the turns done and posted tonight.

Well, I've played 6 turns. I decided to stop for a couple of reasons. First, I am way past the 48 hour deadline. My apologies for the delay. Secondly, I think we need to discuss some strategy. I think we are going to lose Moscow.

Ruff05_250AD_Moscow.JPG

Since the city does not have a Spearman, I really don't think it will survive Isabella's onslaught. I've got a couple of Workers trying to reconnect Russia's iron source. But, I don't see how it will be done in time. And, of course, Russia is not connected to the trade network.

St. Petersburg did survive and will hopefully be connected to Qin in the next few turns. Novgorod was, of course, lost. Saladin came close to losing Baghdad (a lone Archer was down to 0.2 health) but it held. Mecca has plenty of defenders and will hold, but it is all but a useless city to us.

Monty is sending troops to harass Gandhi. I have a stack ready to return the favor next turn. Both of Gandhi's Workers had to flee for cover, though, as Monty's troops are in position to begin pillaging.

Qin was able to stop Victoria's invasion. Shanghai has pretty much been building troops to send to Russia. That leaves Beijing to build an invasion force on its own. Qin's troops need a turn or two of healing, after which they should be ready to depart for England.

The barbs, of course, are a continual pain in the rear. Basically, it is going to be up to Qin and Gandhi to pull us out of this. Personally, I don't see how it can be done. I think this game may be lost. But, I'm open for ideas!

Oh, and I should also mention, I made liberal use of the :whipped: with no regard for the happiness issues.

Edit: One more thing I forgot to mention: We still have 11 turns to go on Machinery.

I had been getting the feeling that the situation was a bit hopeless even before you posted. I'm willing to play it through though. I think what I've learned from this would be to pick your leaders by hand and start building military way earlier. I kind of think you'd need to take out one enemy AI capital in the VERY early going to stand a chance on this one. :crazyeye:

So no, I don't have any useful suggestions unforunately.

I guess I've got it now, though it looks like it will be a losing effort. I thought it might be ever since my last turn, when we were devoting all our resources to barb protection and the AI scores were hundreds of points above ours.

I was in the middle of uploading my save when my civ computer just decided to shut down. Since I can't seem to get it back up again, I think I will need a skip.

Battles! Battles everywhere! The good news first:

1. We have a pretty sizable army.

Now the bad news:

1. It's getting slaughtered.

We lost Moscow pretty early into my turnset. I may have made one or two tactical errors there, but with that many elephants and no spearman, it was going to go sooner or later. We have lost no other cities and are in fact doing a pretty good job of defending our perimeter. I also took an English city (formerly barbarian) to the east of Qin with our Qin-giment and an Aztec city west of Gandhi with the Gandhaniacs. These cities have small stacks in them.

I believe the loss of Moscow set our research back, although it could have just been the lowering of research rates for other leaders. Machinery is still 8 turns away. Fortunately, I have seen no signs that the other side has discovered either civil service or feudalism, either of which would probably signal the end of the game for us for sure. Monty & Isabella did adopt police state after they captured Moscow, which had the pyramids. And we have unhappiness problems now because of our lack of hereditary rule. So things aren't great.

On the plus side: we may be able to take Moscow back, although I have no actual stack there, just some swarming units. We should be able to take another English and Aztec city quite soon with Qin and Gandhi's armies, although I would probably recommend burning them rather than keeping them. They are pretty far away, probably indefensible, and razing them might mean that the enemy will waste time building more settlers.

Things to do: go destroy 1 English and 1 Aztec city. Get Saladin connected up to St. Petersburg or the road to China around there so we can get him some frickin' metal-wielding troops. Shadow the stupid elephant and jaguar that Monty has running around through India. Perhaps launch a party from Mecca to go retake or burn Damascus (to the West). Build troops. Oh... we have a great prophet near Beijing (I may have sent him up toward the other Chinese city). We should probably merge him in Beijing, although I suppose we could do it elsewhere if people can think of any particularly good reason. Beijing may be best, though, since it already has a forge, unlike St. petersburg or other associated areas. Good luck.

P.S. Sorry for no pictures.
