Russian Succession Game

I am moving. We should start thinking how we want to win this game.

Why are we mining plains around Yakust? The city is stuck is size.
Why are we mining plains around Sevasopol? We are limiting it's growth. Most of my worker time is going to be wasted reversing what was done.

IIRC, Yakutsk has no fresh water nor any way to get some. I can't remeber where Sevastopol is, but my guess is it probably can't be irrigated either (no fresh water or else all hills.) Unless we now have electricity...

I am still playing, but I thought I would post the good news.

Yakutsk does have Irragation now.
Sevastopol is being fixed as I play.

Pre-turn.
Lee the terrible comes to power. Many fear his reign. There are rumors the "accident" that killed Mother Russia was not. That somehow Lee the terrible arranged it for selling tech for a wonder we haven't build yet. The people will never know the truth.

The director of land development mysteriously disappears, but Lee says it is for the best. 3 mined squares by size 2 Yakutsk is worthless. Vladivostok has NO growth, but we are working a mountain?

The orders of Lee the terrible.
#1 - Economics, not Chemistry, for it is money that runs the world.
#2 - Cancel all worker orders.
#3 - Liverpool from England, whether the like it or not.

1440 AD - The military advisor asks "Let us destroy them, Sir!". I answer "You're right! They are scum" :flamedevi A single knight takes Liverpool. We gain two slave workers by Conventry. Kill 2 English units near Liverpool at the cost of 1 swordsman.

ARGGHHH the Greeks are building Bach's Catherdral in Knossos. It is only a size 4 city, but it could switch to a different wonder.

1445 AD - The English Scum are building the Catherdral, they have sealed there fate. Killed a longbowmen near Conventry. Conventry falls after the killer Spearman kills 2 knights. We have gems and another slave worker. The English don't want to talk? Fine - more cities will become Russian.

1450 AD - Kill a bunch of English units at no cost. Leo's workshop is built!

1455 AD - Dover is ours. Many knight worn down, but none lost. Egypt and France bribed to declare war on England. :flamedevi I try to sell Germany out of date Engineering, but his offer is worthless. I hate fighting Longbowmen, 1 kills a swordman.

1460 AD - The troops are resting from taking Dover.

1465 AD - York is ours at no cost, and we gain more slave labor. The science leader is sent to the Gulag, for he continued to research Chemistry.

1470 AD - London falls! England is hurting - They want to discuss peace. However, I am not going to break our alliances. ROTHLMAO as dozens of Egyptian War Chariots move toward England.

1475 AD - Yakutsk is growing again, as the great irragation project pays off. The troops get a needed breather. The France take Hasting, hmmm... they will pay for this. Laugh as I watch a War Chariot kill a spearman in the middle ages. ;)

1480 AD - Troop heading toward there next targets.

1485 AD - Cantebury falls. More free workers. The Egyptians capture Warwick :(

1490 AD to 1495 AD - The terrible is upset, for we are running out of English cities to take.

1500 AD - Economics is completed, and Metallurgy is ordered. I want better units orders Lee the terrible. 38 turns to Smith's trading company.

1505 AD - The last English city is in sight - Brighton!

1510 AD - Russia celebrates the end of the English :)

1515 AD - But Lee, the English are gone. Lee argues back, then why to I still see cities with there name? Troops "accidently" cross the border into French territory and another war begins.

1520 AD - Whoops, we are now at war with France.

1525 AD - The killer swordman from France kills a musketman???? Nottingnham falls - more free workers. The English there are happy that we "liberated" them.

1530 AD - Military tradition is on it's way :flamedevi Chartes falls. Lee goes to trade with Egypt selling them some luxuries.. Lee hates to do it, but Rome get Banking for $50 and $35 a turn. He secures much money for Russia, then is killed in a boating "accident" on the way home  Wait a minute, didn't our last leader die in a "boating accident"? Just when he was having fun beating up France.

Summary -

Up next - Brian J
Good luck - you have 3 wonders that should complete during your reign. You can decide what you want to do with France.

You have 2 settlers by London in case of "openings"

Brianov V comes to power in the chaos following Lee the Terrible's death in a 'boating accident'.

Upon investigation, all clues point to an assassination, by France! They have ther dirty mits all over this! Brianov declares. They must be destroyed! Revenge will be ours! Those dastardly French will find Brianov the Bloody will not fall so easily to their assassins!

1540:
French swordsmen fall on our troops. A severely damaged Knight falls to a lowly French warrior and a brave Russian swordsman falls to a sneak attack of 2 French swordsmen. Our troops capture Hastings from the French! A backup Russian Knight avenges our dead Knight and defeats the barbaric French warrior!

A valiant assault on Paris fails, but with no loss of Russian life. 2 French Pikemen were destroyed, with the remaining one injured!

1545:
Paris falls! Brianov the Bloody does not raze it. An assault on Orleans begins. Our valiant knights are held back by Spearmen, Spearmen! The general of the Orleans attack is beheaded on the spot!

Brianov eyes the Egyptians suspiciously, wonders why there are 12 Egyptian war chariots stuffed into the area around Warwick..

1550 - 1555:
The French are building Bachs Cathedral. Brianov laughs! Our troops are at their gates and they build wonders!
We defeat an archer in Orleans and take it! The French empire is now split in three.
The French are now building Copernicus Observatory.. much better protection than pikemen.. hehe
Avignon and Tours fall to our cavalry!

1560 - 1565:
Our workers between Smolensk and Oxford inhale swamp gas which makes them so giddy they clear a Jungle square that is not even in a city radius! Knight production switched to Cossack in all cities! Navigation studied. 2 knight units lost on assault on Marseilles and Lyons. Both cities are still French.

1570:
The impatient Brianov the Bloody orders a cossack rushed in Oxford!
The war effort slows as Brianov waits for reinforcements.

1575:
The Germans are building Magellans Voyage!
Marseilles falls to the Russians!

1580:
Copernicus's Observatory built in Minsk!

1585:
Navigation is discovered, and physics is started. Odessa will start Magellans Voyage.
Lyons is taken! Our cossack enters battle! It defeats a lowly pikeman and begins an assault on Rheims!

1590:
Our mighty Cossacks enter battle but fail to take Rheims.
There are riots due to the war. Brianov the Bloody allow them to continue, as war is nearly over!
Bescanon is ours!

1595:
Rheims falls to Cossacks!
The last French city is Newcastle. The enslaved English will soon be 'liberated'!

1600:
Newcastle falls to us! The English throw us a parade! The Dastardly French are no more! Our past leaders are avenged! With the war over, Brianov switches much production over to peacetime. Banks and Aqueducts are started. French cities are building Temples. Brianov uses some of his treasury to rush temples in French cities.

1605:
Trades Wines and Silks to Greece for 18 gold per turn. Some Knights and Cossacks move up near Egypt. To fortify Russian cities in the north.. Yeah, thats it. Egypt is our friend..;) Tried trading with other cive but they wanted our tech for their luxuries.. Told them where to stuff it.

1610:
Bachs Cathedral is completed in Moscow! Good thing we got it before the French attacked us!
Since there are no wonders available, Moscow starts catching up on much needed improvements.

Brianov the Bloody, tired after the long war, retires to his dascha in Kiev, bravely takes a boat out for fishing, unafraid of 'boating accidents' now that the French are no more!

How to win this war.. Conquest?! :D

If we attack the Egyptians it may be tough.. they have musketmen now. maybe we should wait until we have a bigger force of Cossacks built up, or we can afford to upgrade our knights. Although Zed-F no doubt wants to play with cossacks ;)

We need to build up the English and French cities, add temples, muskets etc. Right now they are held by Knights. A bit of a waste.

Germany is matching us tech for tech right now.. maybe even leading.. I'd hate for them to get panzers wouldnt you guys?
OTOH germany doesnt seem to have Iron, never mind saltpeter!

Greece and Rome both have saltpeter. Spoke too soon, Germany and Rome managed to get cities in Greek lands that have all the resources they need.. Rome's city has both Iron and Saltpeter. Interesting how that worked out considering how far it is from Rome. Did the AI know Iron and Saltpeter would be there?

Well it was fun destroying the evil French! Good luck to Zed-F!

EDIT: one other thing.. The Iron between Hastings and Newcastle is a long way from any town.. should we build a colony or city on it to lock up that gap? Problem would be it would take a lot of productive squares from the surrounding cities.

Ok, got it...

Might be a while to play though as I have an turn to take in RBD2 first.

I certainly would not object... I'd rather play in more games less frequently, than in fewer games more frequently. I might have to start self-limiting my playing to 10 turns -- more than that and I start monopolizing the computer too much and/or staying up too late (especially at wartime! :rocket3: )

I vote for no more players.

One of the nice things is getting to go again quickly.

Last night I have nothing to play despite this game, Greece and France succession games. I was to busy to make a real dent on the Iroqoius anyone plays game.

I dont see why, at this stage of the game we can't have a 10-20 turn rule, so people can play as many or few turns as they want?

If you dont have time to take the full 20 turns, pass or play a few turns, sothat the game can continue? Would this be acceptable for everyone?

No arguement here.
My succession game rule has always been UP to 20 turns.

Me bad boy, staying up late... ;)

Ok, I think I'll skip most of the write up. I started off my turn at peace, reorganizing all the city production and moving our knights and cossacks up to Minsk while dispersing our musketmen throughout the land to cover our English and French cities. I left a few knights between Rouen and Vladivostok to cover off raiders and the like. Then, I declared war! My objective was to do as much damage as possible to Egypt without mobilizing to a war footing -- that is, almost every city remained on "peacetime" development items, except Vladivostok which couldn't do anything useful so kept building musketmen.

I had about a dozen Knights and 9 or so Cossacks to work with. Since I wasn't building any more, I had to be somewhat careful with how I proceeded. Furthermore I wanted to capture rather than destroy Egypt's core cities so I had to keep my forces in the cities to prevent them from flipping while I was starving them and building culture. This made for a slow war. Nevertheless I achieved my objective; both Heiropolis and Thebes have been captured and are well on their way to being subdued (Heiropolis is 100% secure now from flipping.)
We're now into the Industrial age and 1 turn away from Steam Power. We have a sizeable bank account that's growing at a good clip (needed for the war to purchase libraries for culture.) Corruption is an insurmountable problem in anything that's not within a screen of Moscow or Minsk due to the number of cities we control, so don't even bother with anything that isn't in that area. Whether Yakutsk is irrigated or not is now irrelevant as it's hopelessly lost to corruption. :( Maybe if we bother to get or trade for Democracy (the AIs have it) it might improve matters. Rome seems to be the most advanced of the AI civs, not Germany.

Right now the army is in Thebes preventing it from being culture-flipped while it starves and waits for border expansion. There are a couple miscellaneous troops around pestering various other Egyptian cities as well, but our forces are stretched somewhat thin. However, Egypt's pretty much out of mobile attackers and is left with only obsolete city defenders for the most part. It might be possible to get in towards the last couple of major cities in the southern half of Egypt and take them out simultaneously to prevent culture-flipping, but you'll have to be careful. Odessa finally finished Magellan's and is now ready to start producing replacement Cossacks. Otherwise most of the remaining cities are still producing city improvements. :) Change it if you like if you want to prosecute the war more vigorously.

You're up next, Mother Russia! Have fun finishing off Egypt... :hammer:

EDIT: I just saw a post at the main Civ Fanatics Center site that describes the mechanics of culture-flipping to some degree. Apparently our captured Egyptian cities are not as safe from culture-flipping as I had thought (based on garrison size relative to pop,) and should be starved down to size 1 to minimize the risk that they flip. Maybe I should have just razed them and built new cities on the same locations, since we have Sun Tzu and Pyramids...

EDIT: Since we now have Nationalism, and we're close to defeating Egypt, you may want to mobilize for war. Just make sure that any city you don't need producing military units is producing banks or universities and the like so that we get a good development boost as well until the war ends and we can demobilize.

Hey MR,

Hope you are feeling better.. I didn't mean to rush you.. :)

Have fun!

So, anybody, have we decided on an approach for this game? Looks like conquest so far.. and we have the Cossacks to do it! :crazyeyes

Well, looks more like domination than conquest so far. If we finish off our continent and get enough culture going everywhere to expand the borders, we should be most of the way there... our continent is bigger than the greek/roman/german one. We probably will still need to attack one of them, however.

The alternative would be to go for the space race, though we really have too many cities (and hence too much corruption) to be on an optimal path for that. If we do want to go that way we should just make sure we own everything close to our capitals and sell off any extraneous cities that are too far away to be worthwhile. We could also try for a cultural victory but we could probably win the space race before then.
