So I picked this up a week ago on STEAM and I'm really enjoying it.

Except it seems like all the mods are for version 1.04 and not 1.05 or 1.06 (I can't tell if it says a 5 or 6 on my menu screen) :(

I've figured out or read a number of tips and tricks already, and I'm getting ready to go into the Army Warehouses and Red Forest. I have the Big Ben, SEVA suit, G37 and enough bandages and medkits to last me jsut ine (but not too many so as to cut down on weight, and I'm playing on the easiest diffuclty anyways).

I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to repair armour though? As I can see my money running away quickly everytime I get caught by a large pack of dogs or these bloody blood suckers that are attacking me quite often now.

Overall, do you like the ballistics model in it? I was thinking of picking it up, but some reviews I saw say the ballistics in it is really lame. E.g. Shotgun blasts not killing at point blank.

I remember the ballistics being great...provided that you used bullet spewing weapons instead of pellets.

Good choice of game, comrade Scamp! :D

I actually made a small mod for this that tweaks what the traders sell a little. I'll attach it to the end of this post if you want to check it out. It adds a shotgun (TOZ-34) that the devs made but cut out of the game for some reason to the trader's inventories, makes Russian guns/ammo in stock more than Western ones, and tweaks afew other things, for example you can buy silencers, scopes and grenade launchers from the Barman.

You should be able to find a repair mod somewhere if you trawl a little.

I can't really tell. I have no ability to tell distance (in RL and games) and I'm rarly shooting far enough away to notice nullet drop.

It took getting used to (for me) that the iron sights are not 100% guarenteed to hit as they are in every other game I've played that has them. Although with the G37 I'm getting using less ammo, on humans. I want a flame thrower to kill the dogs with.

@Darth: Thanks! I'll try that mod out after I finish the game, or is it save compatible?

Dogs? Those are rats, mate :D

They are most certainly dogs, well, were. The "rats" are little more than bony zombie things.

Are there any major mods anyone would recommend?

Fun game; I played through to Dark Valley. The game became somewhat annoying with the weight limitations and soldiers that would somehow detect you when you were on the other side of a wall and silently crouch-walking. Gun accuracy seemed very inconsistent as well, the sniper rifles were mostly pointless. Silenced pistols and knives apparently made just as much noise as firing an entire clip of an ak, because even if I'd one-hit kill someone in the back of the head with them, everyone for 50m around would know I was there, and start coming for me. If it didn't constantly devolve into a pure kill everything shooter, it would've been more enjoyable.

It was an interesting story though, and when they worked properly the sneaking around bits were fun.

I don't remember there being any sniper rifles until after the Dark Valley. Once you complete Lab X16 you already have a decent rifle and can now buy the G37 which is one of the best. I havn't come across any real sniper rifles yet, just scoped assault rifles.

This game pissed me off immensely. There must've been something wrong with my game, because even in the early game I'd get OWNED so hard even with using strategy. It forced me to use a trainer >_<

And then I progress through the whole game, over 40 hours of game-play, my mission was to find the "Wish-Granter", and BAM, I'm dead. Game over. WOO. Worth it so much.

The silencers were either bugged or for some crazy reason purposfully useless in the original game, but there are mods that fix them.

It's save compatible. You might also want to look at the 'Zone Reclamation Project' which fixes a load of bugs, and allows you to tweak afew extra things (such as how long dead bodies remain for): http://www.metacognix.com/stlkrsoc/index.html. If you want a realistic weapons mod then the one I'd reccomend is PLR's Realistic Weapons Mod: http://stalker.filefront.com/file/PLRs_Realistic_Weapons;88736x#1519006.

Good hunting, and go easy on the vodka. ;)

You really have absolutely no luck do you? (At highland).

@Darth: thanks!

Doubt it. I uninstalled the game out of frustration after that happened. My main objective was to find the Wish Granter (magically I wasn't supposed to kill Strelok, or at least there were no real objectives about it besides 'Kill him'), so I do that, immediately a cut scene occurs. My character, Marked One, walks up to it, and says, "I wish to rule the world." Next thing I know, he's dead, and then there are the End Credits. Wow, how amazing.

If the player kills both the Duty and Freedom leaders, Strelok wishes I want to rule the world. The Monolith will then absorb his soul and he will become part of it.

Ending 1 of 7. Yeah I kind of looked up the wikipedia article on it when searching for information. There is a quest you need to do to get the two good endings that you recieve during/after X16. And trust me, you don't want to kill Strelok.

As well, maybe it was just me, but I don't expect happy endings in dark and gritty games.

Ah yes Stalker, i loved it. Fantastic atmosphere! It felt a bit unpolished when i played it but really good fun nonetheless. Im definitely looking farward to the prequel "Clear Sky".

And regarding armor weapon repair, thats not in the vanilla game (at least not when i played it). But i installed a mod for it that worked great. Much more practical when you can repair your stuff instead of having to get new gear all the time. Also, accuracy in weapons decreased when their conditions do, so it handy to keep them in tip-top shape.

My favorite weapon was a silencer sniper, i dont remember the name, but it was wicked for those all important headshots.

I don't see much wear and tear on my guns that I've used, they are all in really good shape (although I've only used 3 of mine for any length of time, I have a couple of uniques stashed away with otherstuff inside the bar.)

Took me 24.7 hours. Pretty damn good for 20 bucks. Plus I fully intend to play it somemore with mods.

Just finished the game, tried out three endings, the wish maker one I got was money (I had almost 200k), then the two better endings, although one of them just plain sucks, but the other at least is an ending, although an epilogue would be nice but it did SOMETHING anyways.

Only reason I killed the Duty leader was because the bastards started shooting at me for no reason :p. You know when you pass by a group of them they say something in Russian (or something similar) and point their guns at you? And that when you put your gun away, they lower their weapons? Well that happened when I passed the leader, put away my gun, and then they randomly start shooting at me.

Weird. Although they did say to keep your gun holstered when in his presence. Did you patch your game up? There seemed to be quite a few changes between 1.01 and 1.04 according to the fansite guide I was looking through (mostly to decide on which weapons/armour to use).
