Safe Surfing and Windows Security Tips

Is IE8 actually good at blocking pop-ups and adverts? I know IE6/IE7 aren't that good at it from practice, but never used IE8 that much.

Only Firefox does a good job of advert blocking.

I'm not actually sure about popups, I'm just assuming it's on par with other browsers, as it is in most other aspects. (I use admuncher as an adblocker for all my browsers.)

Firefox plus NoScript. AdBlock + will let you run all kinds malicious scripts as it was never intended to block all malicious content in general. Ideally use both of them, but if security is your concern then NoScript should be the priority.

Yeah, noscript sucks, it only works for FF, makes browsing a huge hassle, and has shady developers.

I don't use Firefox other than for development, spend all kinds of time on risky sites, and have never had any scripts do anything they shouldn't.

Feel free PM me if you know of any actual sites that contain such scripts, I'd be curious.

Its not about scripts not doing what they shouldnt do, its about scripts doing what they are supposed to be: Ads, link redirecting, other annoying bits. Once in a while, a site will have some malicious JavaScript. For instance, a couple of weeks ago, someone on Reddit wrote an exploit. He/She embedded it in their post, and simply hovering your mouse over the offending link would make your browser go into a post frenzy, reposting the exploit as many times as it could until you could navigate away. Opera and IE users were pretty screwed. In fact, the only people who werent affected were those that didnt have Reddit whitelisted in NoScript.

Also, it only works for FireFox -- that doesnt make it suck. That means your browser of choice sucks instead. I do agree there's some shadiness there, especially with the link Aimee posted. At the same time, I find that more often than not, NoScript it helpful to have, and thus, I keep it.

Shameless plug here: You want really secure browsing, you may want to look into a proxy-like security service. SaaS means you dont need to install anything, you just redirect all your traffic to their servers, and they take care of everything for you. The one service Ive been testing for the last couple of months, Zscaler, works quite well for that.

NoScript is excellent for the security conscience and it doesn't break the internet. I don't believe people realize just how dangerous javascript can be. Yes, its powerful and very nice to use, but its also very risky.

One of my security podcasts mentioned that NoScript was for the advanced user. At the time I thought that was a rather foolish comment.
