This is not about the Metallica song, although it has to do with angst in general :)

Have you ever visited a mental institution? I do not ask if you have been hospitalized in one, merely if you have ever been inside one.

I once visited one. They appear to be places with very calming atmosphere, ideal for the patients who are there to get better.

I do not recall much from it, it was on a low hill top, surrounded by trees. The only anecdotal (up to now) piece from that visit remaining in my memory was a mental patient who looked at me and asked me for "bread". I later questioned the lead therapist there why this happened, and he replied that probably the patient identified me (symbolically) with his father, who was responsible for feeding him (both literally and metaphorically; with advise and discussion).

Being schizoid i too have been in therapy, but never hospitalized since i never posed any threat to others or myself. So i have heard many stories about mental institutions, some of which are horrible indeed (have to do with self-mutilation for example). But these places, when run correctly by able doctors are very useful, and their ultimate goal is to re-introduce the patients to society, at least to a viable degree.

And on that note i will wait for any reflections you have on this matter :) Dachs probably has read Der Zauberberg and in that case knows of the Berghof Sanitarium, where a youth went for a two week visit and ended up staying for seven years ;)

Yup. my mate had a speed psychosis, he thought he was people off the telly, etc.

They pumped him full of zombie drugs and we busted him out ;)

I've been in two, neither were nice places. But the second one was probably as good as these places should be.

To clarify, neither time as a pateint

If I have been hospitalized in one, does that count?

Yes it counts, i just did not want people to feel intimidated. Although i see no stigma in being in a mental asylum (unless the asylum itself is horrible) some seem to have such views, and probably it is not a good idea to mention such information online anyway ;)

But you could share your impressions of the place if you want to.

I went to one once to apply for a job but didn't get it. It's in my hometown in Kentucky and was built in 1817 which makes it the 2nd oldest mental hospital in America. It didn't look that old though, I guess it's been remodeled. There are lots of stories about ghosts and stuff there. I saw a photo of it in a book about the history of my hometown and it was referred to as a lunatic asylum. It sounds grim but it actually looked nice and pretty normal but I just saw a small part of it and I don't recall seeing any patients.

One of my mother's friends was committed and my mother actually helped her daughter to have her committed. She had a serious drinking problem and was threatening to kill herself. She was just committed for 4 days and then had a hearing where she got released.

I was required to be in a mental institution during medical school, where I watched frightening scenes of people screaming at each other, getting violent, and being drugged. Some of these people were even patients.

;)

True story: I seriously considered checking myself into a mental hospital a couple years ago during the holiday season. Work-related stress FTW.

I think that Sanitariums first appeared in large numbers back when Tuberculosis was a common disease. The term probably refers to any sort of (usually isolated) hospital which has a specific type of patient. I have read mental asylums being referred to as Sanitariums as well :)
