Yeah "Formal War" as opposed to "Surprise War". I wonder if the requirement to start such war is simply having that civic or certain in-game requirements also has to happen (e.g. city too close, doesn't like you..etc).

It has been mentioned that you would need to denounce someone before declaring war, however to my knowing there has not been mentioned that you would need some sort of reason to denounce.

Diplomatic Service. Here's a pic: http://i.imgur.com/gsDgn4L.jpg (not shown in any of the videos I published)

You beautiful bastard...

Oh and while you're here, would you be able to shed a little light on the Trading Post mechanic/icon? Is it's only function to show that two cities already have a road connection or is there something more?

No worries if not, your videos have been a treat either way.

Not sure if there's anything more to it I'm afraid - sorry!

I suspect France get spies sooner than everyone else as they're able to construct a spy with the castles technology. Though the language does say "additional spy" - it's important to note that Diplomatic Service is a renaissance Civic and Castles is an medieval Tech. The tech tree seems to move slightly faster than the civic so France could possibly unlock castles before Diplo Service with no benefit if it doesn't allow for the early spy.

So either France gets a spy slightly earlier without the needed cultural investment, or, assuming castles is discovered before or around the time as diplomatic service, they start off with two spies to everyone else's one.

From one of the videos, it appears that the AI having denounced you counts as a reason for "Formal War".

Personally I think that icon looks way more like a parachute than it does an Airship.

It looks a lot more like an early blimp than a parachute. It's not open at the bottom, and there is a box rather than a man under it

A google image search for parachute icon displays a box more often than a man.

Unless it's a hot air balloon, it doesn't look really more like a blimp icon than it does a parachute icon.

Though I think the very first flight tech seems a bit early for paratroopers. So really, who knows.

I said airships. Of the five fabric-clad rigid airships the US Navy had, four of them crashed, and they scrapped the fifth. Airships were never a viable combat unit.

A blimp is a different animal.

Not to be knitpicking, but isn't blimp a sub-class of airships that have non-rigid construction? When you say "airship", are you talking about zeppelins?

Yes, a blimp is a non-rigid airship.

All four of them crashed because of structural failure, by that logic WWI aeroplanes were not viable combat units either.

Cheers for that! I'm happy that there seems to be a requirement for a reason to declare a Formal/Just War and not just unlocking a specific civic. It seems like the war mechanics in general (declaration with casus belli, occupying cities, and peace deals) are shifting more towards EU-style, which I personally love :)

In EU Casus Belli happens out of thin air - you could just fabricate it and everything's ok. Civ6 mechanics looks much better. To declare justify war you need to publically denounce another civilization first, but:

1. It will take several turns after denunciation to make war justified, so opponent have time to prepare.

2. Denunciation gives your opponent right to declare justified war right away.

This gives perfect drawbacks for denunciations and really strategic choice between surprise and justified wars.
