Yes, because Square-Enix has never screwed me over for no reason,
I meant more in terms of how you're at their mercy and apparently their account system can be annoying (although I'm not sure if that extends to FF14 or not).
unlike the Steam, which banned my account just because I wasn't buying enough games from them
Sorry but that is very hard to believe.
(look in the fine print: They can ban your account for any reason they feel like),
That is standard fine print in the EULA/ToS for almost anything. Every digital store has that, including GameStop and GamersGate.
and I'm not the only one (just look up the F*** Steam facebook group that I'm a member of).
Steam has plenty of problems, but groups like that are unfortunately very poor sources of accurate reporting on problems. Most of the time when someone posts to a group like that, or makes a fuss out of a VAC or account ban or restriction on some other site like reddit, it turns out they were not being honest about the real reason or whole story. They almost always did something to break the ToS.
On top of that, Steam is basically SPYWARE that you have to PAY for... And just about as hard to remove from your system as actual spyware.
Except for the part where Steam is just as easy to remove as any other program, doesn't spy on you anymore besides tracking anonymous gameplay data (which is extremely helpful for game developers) and anti-cheat measures (which any online game's anti-cheat software will be doing), and is free. There is the somewhat random Steam hardware and software survey, but that is entirely optional.
That is why the only Digital Distribution stores that I'll deal with are Gamer's Gate and Gamestop Online:
The Terms of Service for both GamersGate and Gamestop Impulse include the right to terminate your account for any reason and without notification.
They don't require you to have TSR software running in the background (boy I guess I'm showing my age using THAT particular term) that takes up half your system memory, or constantly keep track of everything you do while said clunky, system-resource hogging piece of crap spyware is running in the background and send it to a questionably secure database.
While Steam's performance wasn't that great in 2007, it wasn't a huge system hog then and it certainly is not now. I find that it usually uses ~100 MB of ram (currently it is using 89MBs or RAM) which is pretty much negligible these days.
Sorry about the rant, but anything involving Steam and its virtual monopoly on games these days is enough to set my blood boiling!
Steam has its flaws and problems for sure, but whatever it was that happened between you and them 7 years ago isn't even close to a common problem.
Now she's looking a bit more badass!
That she is indeed! I've never cared for the series but FF14 does have some pretty graphics.
