Due to the prposal brought up by Chillaxation and then the subsequent support of others, this is a new intiative poll for the placing of the second city. It will be a vote on either the green or Yellow outlined city placement. This is already a dicussion going on and i expect it to be carried on in this thread.

From a completeness view point, probably should have "Other" in there ..

However, I can't imagine a site topping Green - it gets horses, blocks the Mongols and is more productive than yellow.

Yet for those sea go'ers out there, yellow has access to the ocean, and in my experience, an early port is imPORTant! :goodjob:

I like yellow. It gives that city a bit of a buffer from the other civ. Not only that the horses are availvble from turn 1 and if copper isnt around we might need a few.

My arguments for the site outlined in green - known also as "A1" - are elsewhere on the forum.

If you're still undecided on where to settle, I have respectful rebuttals to some of the arguments presented by honorable Swissempire and citizen Robboo.

"We need early ocean access". I concede this. But Licentia is far from landlocked - we have shores stretching in every direction, as far as our scouts can travel. Finding coastline is the least of our worries. Licentia will be a sea power with or without our second city being a port. And I would say it is best to have a city for a productive purpose and a positional purpose. Let's settle port cities that will become mighty shipyards, not drab backwaters.

"Site A, YELLOW, places us further from the Mongols." Both we and they are masters of horsemanship. A tile's distance further won't deter them if we misstep and find ourselves attacked by them.

"Site A, YELLOW, gives us instant access to Horses." Instant access to Horses, yes, but it will be only in a port city site that can't build Chariots or Horse Archers quickly and may never be able to do so without land improvement technologies of which we only now dream. By the time we're able to connect our road network to either site, site A1, GREEN's cultural boundaries will have expanded due to the unifying richness of our creativity. Part of the glory of Licentia is that we're able to settle a tile away from resources and be confident in their use; we should turn this to our advantage and attempt to encompass within our cities a balanced mix of resources and regular ground.

Site green is the better site, but what if the Mongols try and get there first? Do we kill their Settler and start a war? Do we take a slightly less optimal site before they can settle (eg: 1 N of green or even fall back to yellow)? or do we give up and let them have the land and horses?

Good question! I think we should take yellow if it means getting there before the Mongols and green if we're in no danger of the Mongols getting there first. The question brings up an even more important point, what do we do if the people decide on a course of action which is no longer possible?

I'll handle this possibility in the instructions when the time comes, e.g. move the escort unit onto the plot between yellow and green -- if there are Mongols already on green or within range to settle their city first, then settle on yellow since green is no longer possible. We can save a lot of time by positioning an escort unit at our borders ahead of time, so the settler can go 2 steps. AI's seem to move their settler+escort one step at a time since they can't plan ahead for where the escort will meet up.

Just to know more about how DGs work, how is this usually handled by the people actually playing the game and advising the DP(s)? Is an executive decision customary, or is interrupting the game and re-polling the people?

This poll is validated and Site green declared the winner
