Regarding the costs of the special election, some news outlets have been reporting $24 million over $12 million. There will be a primary in any case, so that $12 million must be spent for an election this year, irrelevant of whether a separate date is set. Holding the special election in October costs an additional $12 million. So the choice is between $12m and $24m, not $0m and $24m as implied by some coverage.
I'm really surprised by the move to hold it on a separate day even earlier than what was expected by the people who wanted it held this year, and a mere 20 days away from an ordinary scheduled election to boot. It seems excessive.
