Serious bug in BtS. Is there a solution?

As Gandhi, India, my fast workers, if on automated, keep building forts over all resources. Whats going on? Like, all my mines, stone, everything, has forts. The only resource where they dont build forts is rice. Whats going on?

its not a serious bug. Forts now connect resources so it is ok to build them on resources outside the cities' fat crosses (this is new to BtS).
it does use a bit more workers' turns though so Bhruic wanted to change it in his unofficial patch, I am not sure if he got around to it yet though.

Well, why forts everywhere? its just annoying that they are doing this. Forts are worthless when on top of a copper mine...

Even if forts on top of copper give you copper, a mine would give you more manufacturing points. Its not like I need troops on every single one of my resources...

Nope they are not. They would be negative IF a city could work that mine, but I bet there is none that can - and you get the copper from the fort just as well as from the mine.

But sometimes I get lucky and I create a city right next to copper, and that +4 hammers helps a lot in getting the city started. Its still a serious bug since it renders the automation button worthless.

But once you build a mine after that the workers won't build over it. You are right though that automated workers with leave existing improvements flag set should not touch any improvements (so it is a bug). I would not regard it as as serious or game breaking though, but that probably is just a difference in what to we regard as serious bugs ;)

This is an annoying bug for sure. What I do there is an option to turn off workers building over already built improvements. Later in the game I check that option and I'm good to go with automation. If you want any windmills you'll need to go do that yourself. Other that that problem solved.

I think it's more annoying then some people think, because they don't automate. Trust me if you spend 40 turns on a nuke and some worker comes through and puts a fort on your uranium... it's irritating. My favorite you declare war, then you realize there is a fort on your only source of oil and those ships you put into production aren't even being built.

 40 turns for a nuke? what are you doing?

Victim of circumstance. I wanted a nuclear device but I was in a war. I also play marathon. So I put an unstable city in charge of producing one. Before it was finished I lost the uranium resource. I've had this happen while building destroyers as well. In that instance I went from being the first power on the block to have them... to realizing it was going to take 12+ turns to turn one out. Someone above commented that you still have the resources but I do not find that statement to be true. I've been cut off from my resources by forts. When I first noticed this I started watching my vital spots. Then they would come up and I couldn't tell if they were building a railroad or building over until I clicked the worker. I realized I could actually turn build over off and have been content ever since.

I think you're making things up here because building a fort on resources STILL GETS YOU THAT RESOURCE. It would make no difference to your build.

It does slightly annoy me tho, but only because it's a ridiculous concept. How does a fort dig copper out of the ground?

think about the colonization of the new world, when explorers would build a fort in an area near abundant fur or whatever to take control of that resource. a fort isn't a major industrial improvement and so doesn't give the extra hammers on that tile, but it makes sense that it should give you the resource

so let me get this straight.

Say there's incense in your big fat cross. You build a fort there, but you can't get it yet cuz calender is not researched.

But once calender is researched, you automatically reap the benefits of the resource? Then all I have to do is rebuild the plantation over the incense. That gives you a few additional turns of the resource :king:

Exactly. I always build forts on oil for instance, so that I can start pumping as soon as combustion is researched. Worry about the well when you have time.

It wouldn't make any difference. You still get access to the Oil with a Fort on top of it so your ships will still get built. The only thing you might lose is the production bonus you get from actually having a Well on the Oil. But since Workers will only build Forts if the resource is outside a city's fat cross, that's not an issue.

I believe you still have to have a road to that resource to gain access... whether you have a fort on it or it's own improvement.
Perhaps you don't have access because it's not connected with a road?

I used to always automate all my workers, not just as they were built, but in the game options. I didn't want to be bothered with the micro-management, and this goes back to CIV III. Since noticing this little bug in BTS it has forced me to learn how to manage my workers better. Before this with a large continent and maybe 20+ cities with at least one worker per city, all on automate, I've found that 6-8 workers working in pairs can do a better job and just as fast. By the time railroads come along most improvements have been completed and then I automate the pairs to build the railroads.

I just found out that the forts only get built occasionally in my current game, and if you replace them with the correct improvement, the workers dont build over them. My old game was an advanced start game, and every single one was a fort. Now, in a normal game, its all fine.

I pretty much never automate workers to build improvements. Something I learned playing Civ III. Automated workers do incredibly stupid things, like this one.

I do sometimes automate workers to connect cities, since that's harmless.
