SGOTM 01 - Chaos

I checked the save and I am confused.
Ruff, you said, Arbela was taken, but it's not. It's still Persian. Could you be talking about Susa?
I don't know - one city is all the same to me. The city I took is on a hill, last hill on the right of a row of hills. Two tiles away from the coast. It is now full of maces (about 5 or more) and some cats and 1 medic horse.

Edit: you are right. From the log I posted ... Turn 254, 1184 AD: You have captured Susa!!!

0: We are at peace with Cyrus, but have a great army there, and should be able to take out some of his cities after the ten turns of peace. I'll guess I'll build up for that as well as doing the good old civ maintainance turns.

Caravels will be sent out for scouting, and we will check out Huyans lands. To bad caravels can't pillage.

Moscow should be building culture buildings from time to time. We should be able to flip those two Indian cities.

I see that we are at 0% research, is that binary research? I've heard something about that, and to those of you that don't know what it is, it is about allways being at either 0% or 100% research.
In the long run, that is supposed to result in faster research than just staying in for example 70 % research all the time, becouse the commerce bonuses, like those you get from the library, gets rounded down.
I don't think the difference is that big, but I guess I'll try it during my turns.
Feel free to stop doing binary research if it confuses you guys.

Roosevelt.jpg

At turn three, Roosevelt shows up.
Roosescaravel.jpg

He comes from the east, by Capac. We have no techs to offer him. He has theology that we don't have.
Engineering comes in. The only tech that Ghandi doesn't have that we can research is Paper. I go for that and hope we can trade it to him later.
tradingoppertunities.jpg

5: Huana Capac has got paper. Let's hope that he will not trade it to Ghandi. It's Unlikely considering thay haven't even met:crazyeye:
We get paper in three turns.
Paper.jpg

8: Paper comes in, but all Ghandi wants to give is his world map and some gold. I trade maps with Roosevelt. Find Saladin and Roosy on a big continent, and Capac probably alone.

9: Trade paper for Theology with Roosevelt. Unsure if this was such a smart move. We could probably have gotten Theo for free from Cyrus after we have roughened him up a bit. We can now declare war on Cyrus again, let's get this over with. The trumpets soar. Fortunately Ghandi is still friendly with us.

10: Here are our troops stationed.
Warmap.jpg

Cyrus will counterattack against Susa, thats the reason for the amount of forces there. He probably has even more guys coming, so be careful with moving people out of Susa. Also when taking cities, don't let any units stand alone inside or outside the gates. Time those captures so we don't lose forces unnessecary

I went for Arbela (the real Arbela;)) first cause that other city is on a hill.
Cityonahill.jpg

I would go straight for Persopolis next.
Capital.jpg

That would give old man Cyrus something to think about. Whip troops in new cities once they get online to deal with the unhappy people and Persian aggression at once.

We might get the circumnavigation if we don't trade our map to Ghandi.
After circum, we can get some good stuff for our map.
I started Printing press after Paper. It will do us real good financially, and we will probably have a monopoly on it. Research is set to 0%

I will be gone for two weeks on holyday, so skip me until July 12. Keep the game moving and don't **** up;) I'll be watching.

hmmm. The upload site doesn't work. If it isn't fixed by the time I leave, i'll post it here.
Also, I forgot to save the game before quitting, so I had to load an autosave from turn 8 and replay from there. I'm quite sure I did everything excactly the same way as the first time, but if you notice anything different from the screenshots and the save, that's the reason. Terribly sorry.

Did you post the save here - pls say yes.

Munterpipe posts the save at Jun 28, 2006, 03:12 PM and jeejeep just scraps in to claim the right to play at Jun 29, 2006 03:04 PM. A full 8 minutes to spare

Sorry, no time for a chaotic mathematical report today. The turns went pretty well though.

0. Looks like we didn't trade Paper for Theology after all. I decide not to do the trade. We can get it from Cyrus for peace. I stop the binary research and set it to 50%.

1. Battle of Arbela: We lose one suicide cat, kill two longbows and two axes, and take the city. Not bad. I also suicide a cat against a large stack Cyrus just moved onto a hill near Susa.

IT. Cyrus' stack apparently has a death wish. It attacks Arbela and we kill two cats, an ax, a longbow, two swords, and a horse archer without a loss. At Arbela, however, we lose a full-HP mace to a counterattacking sword.

2. Mop up the stack with no losses (an immortal, an ax, and a cat.) We also kill a cat and an axe that Cyrus landed next to our huge stack.

3. Move troops and heal.

4. Start the march towards Persepolis.

5. Still marching.

IT: We get the circumnavigation bonus!

6. Persepolis is in sight. Trade our world map to Gandhi for his and 30 gold. Roosevelt won't give us his World Map.

persepdef0000.JPG

7. The Battle of Persepolis: We lose a suicide cat and two maces, but kill four longbows and an ax. Only a cat remains defending the city.

1cat0000.JPG

IT: Gandhi: Wheat-Silver.

8. Scouting mace spots Pasargadae's suprisingly large defenses. Take Persepolis and kill a random sword.

pasardef0000.JPG

9. Move toward Pasargadae.

IT: Scouting mace kills a longbow at Pasargadae but loses to an axe.

10. Meet Saladin! He is even with us technologically, knowing theology but not paper. Unfortunately, our relations are at -6 already.

saladmeet0000.JPG

Notes:
All new reinforcements are going to Pasargadae. There are already three catapults and a few maces that have almost reached it. The next player can decide whether to have the main stack help out, or send it deeper into Persian territory

War Weariness is getting pretty bad. Since we are in Hereditary Rule, we can combat that by building war chariots and sticking them in unhappy cities. I already started that a little.

I'm just to tired to be praise every move i did but here's my turn

1. Move troops

2. Move Troops

3.Enter the new era and researched PP, switch to guilds, Huayna first to discover liberalism  kill 1 catapult

4.Cyrus starts to attack units outside Pasagrade, we lose 1 mace to a cata

5. I move more reinforcements towards Pasagrade and we lose another defending mace

6.Our maceman finally kill 2 cata's

7. lose another mace and kill an axe and cata, gems pop up near Novgorod, one caravel makes it to Cuzco, this is where Huayna's army is at and he is already loading troops into Galleons

8. We kill 2 more units, it seems like he has an endless supply, heal more units

9. kill a few units and lose 1 mace and 1 crossbow

10. Guilds is complete and switch to banking in 4 turns, heal and move units

My have a sizeable army outside Pasagrade but most of our units are weak. The defences are down, we could attack but i think we would have to sacrifice every cata. America is doesnt have PP so we could trade it to him.

When i scouted Inca's coastal cities next to ours he had low number of troops so we could attack there and raze those cities. I suggest to try and get Rossevelt or Ghandi to go to war with Huanya. They may not do much but it would distract Inca till we get astronomy.

Good job, everyone on advancing our suit.
Circumnavigation, more land, and techs to boot.
I have it but won't play until Saturday.
I'm hoping for input to guide my play.

On that day also, I'll write up our story.
Sadly, real life has been rather gory
and time consuming else I would have begun.
Speaking of which, I now must run.

do we qualify for the spoiler yet?
Yes - I will complete my artistic history of our world while Hookem does the words and post to the spoiler. I guess we are all able to read the spoiler too.

Sorry for not rhyming but I've got too much to write. This are my thoughts but I won't play until tomorrow.

Research: Gandhi and Huayan are way ahead. Roosevelt has Astronomy, Theology, and Banking but lacks Printing Press. Cyrus has Theology which we can get from making peace. Saladin is also up the 3 techs but won't trade them. We need Drama for the culture slider and the cheap theaters. Astronomy will be a major boost as it will allow trade routes across the ocean. My short term plan is to switch to Drama, trade it and Printing Press to Roosevelt for Astronomy (may need to throw in some change). I'll also trade some techs to Saladin for cash.

After that, I'm thinking Replaceable Parts since Gandhi doesn't have it. If we get it first, we'll be able to trade for lots of the techs we missed. Banking would be nice but I'm thinking that theaters and military will consume much of our production in the near future.

Persia: We need to take Pasargardae and then get peace. He'll be left with his capital in the west of India (I don't know how that got there) and two frozen cities. We can finish him off later at our leisure though the capital will be difficult to hold. I'll probably hit very hard next turn, not worrying too much about losses.

India: Gandhi culturebombed Bengal to take the luxuries around Tarsus. That also grabbed the second incense that I was planning to use the settler for. The only place for the settler now is a fishing village southeast of Thebes. India has about the same amount of land as we do so domination will be difficult unless we move a lot faster than him. The backup United Nations plan could be to make friends with Roosevelt or Saladin and then change to their religion when there are only three civs left.

National Wonders: We need to get the Forbidden Palace built. The three likely candidates I see are Susa, Pasargardae, and Moscow. Please let me know what you think.

Heroic and National Epics and Globe Theater are also still out there. One approach would be Globe and National in Helio which would start working on great people. I've also read about using your Globe city to whip military but haven't done it and can't find it right now. What do people think?

Inca: They will be invading soon and much of the mainland production will need to turn to military to repel the invaders. Knights are probably our best responders as they hit hard and move quick. I'll also get some more maces to handle the pikes. Frigates will be nice but will take some research.

There is no backup plan. Domination is the way to go but to do this, we need to form a Permanent Alliance with Gandhi. We should tech towards those techs and start being really really nice to him.

Turn 0 (1400):
Research changed to Drama and Slider moved to 80%. Thebes>Heroic Epic, Heliopolis>National Epic, Many mainland cities to military. Susa>courthouse. Courthouse whipped in Persepolis.

IT
Persian Axeman loses to Mace

Turn 1 (1406). Drama is learned. Rostov temple>theater. Persepolis>theater. Heliopolis>theater. Three other cities changed to theater. Attack holds off for 3 more mace to arrive. Roosevelt won't deal for Astronomy so Gunpowder is started.

IT Persian cat suicides on 3 maces.

Turn 2 (1412): Pasargardae taken with the loss of 2 catapults. Peace is made for Theology, 70 gold, and 2 gpt. Theater whipped in Tarsus.

Turn 3 (1418): Units begin moving towards the mainland from the Persian subcontintent. Byblos founded se of Thebes.

Turn 4 (1424):

Turn 5: 1430
Rostov Theater>longbow
PiRamses Theater>harbor
Elephantine courthouse>library

Turn 6: 1436
Heliopolis Theater>Globe theater

Turn 7: 1442
Gunpowder>Chemistry. Trade Printing Press & Gunpowder to Roosevelt for Astronomy, Banking, & 30 gold. Trade Gunpowder to India for Music, World Map, and 270 gold. Trade copper and cow to Saladin for fur and 8 gpt. 2 galleys are upgraded to galleons and 2 more are begun. Chemistry will give us grenadiers who can take the war to Huayana. Thebes, Moscow, and Novgorod change production to bank.

Turn 8 1448

Turn 9: 1454

Turn 10: 1460
Pasargardae comes out of revolt and a courthouse is started. This needs to be whipped since the city is starving due to India's culture. Rostov will have a longbow next turn that should go to Byblos. Chemistry is due in 6 turns and we can then make frigates and grenadiers. These should let us take the war to Huayana. There will be 4 galleons in Pi-Ramses soon after that (there are a few long go-tos headed in that direction) and Thebes will have the Heroic Epic online in 8 turns. I was hoping for Susa for the Forbidden Palace but it's just too slow. Pasargardae will be better.

I'm not going to be able to play again until July 13. I'm sorry I didn't get the summary written up. I'll get it done before I get back. Good luck to all.
