SGOTM 01 - Realms Beyond

Eventually, I'll let everyone know when we met everyone else. Take it, OSO or Memphus.

OSO, 's yours.

I got the save and I'll take a look at it ASAP.

It wasn't specified if one of us is going to pick up the 5 turns that Dantski didn't play so I'll just do 10 turns and let someone else play 15.

1250 AD - Turn Received

1256 AD - Heliopolis & Memphis built cats. Rinse and repeat

1262 AD - Thebes built crossbow same build. I decided to mark the Rally Point on the strategic layer as I noticed some crossbowmen and cats arrive there from Dantski's move. All offensive units that I built are heading to this point. Any galleys built are moving to the square due east of it.

1268 AD - Moscow built a Mace. Started on a Missionary

1274 AD - Memphis built a Cat. Same build.

1280 AD - Education discovered. Started on Gunpowder. Thebes built a crossbow. Started on a university. Heliopolis built a Cat; same build ordered. St Pete's built a Mace; ordered up a galley. Rostove built a crossbow; ordered up a cat. Moscow built a missionary; started another maceman.

1286 AD - Yaroslavl buitl a cat; cat ordered again. Yekterinburg finished the courthouse and started a lighthouse.

1292 AD - Great Merchant born in Memphis. I moved him to Thebes. I was debating whether or not to convert him into a super specialist or not. He can't complete guilds in one shot and I imagined we were going to trade for that tech eventually. We might want to save him for a GA but I felt we could leave that up for discussion so I skipped the remainder of his turns for now.

1298 AD - Memphis does it's catapult construction. Same with Yaroslavl. Alexandria finished a forge and started on a cat. Novgorod finished the market and started on a cat.

1304 AD - St Pete's built a galley and started another one. Moscow continued on another maceman.

1310 AD - Heliopolis and Rostov continued building cats.

Way to build military. I've got a dastardly plan (I mean that in the best possible sense): We build a couple Caravels, or recall a few more, and then drop some explorers on Huyana's continent, in fortified positions, to hold the line...

On second and more rational thought, never mind.

I'll get to this tomorrow, and will endeavor NOT to lose any of our units.

Ok, turns played. Here's whut happuned:

First off, I switched us from Gunpowder to Astronomy. We're gonna need a LOT of galleons to get our troops over there... if that durn mountain range to the east of Alexandria/Elephantine wasn't there, it might be different... We'll get it in 15 at 50% sci, something less at 60%, with a deficit.

Secondly, I switched us to Theocracy. I thought about Vassalage, but we saved some $ dropping from high cost to medium, and we still get the xp, so I decided against it.

To allow us to run at a little better science rate, and upgrade our galleys, there is a Great Merchant, conveniently living in Thebes. I'm packing him off to Dehli, hopefully that'll net the most $. If not, I apologize. But we can still send him over to the far side of the world.

Because workers were annoying me, I set them all on Trade Networking. It's the only automated option I use, and it's safe because I say unto my workers: Build ye not over already built thingies (or, alternatively, squares).

So I started the turns, and attempted to trade Gandhi Printing Press for Various Military Technologies. Unfortunately, when I am at "Friendly" with any AI, it seems to mean: "We will never trade with you, or at least not at cost." Go figger

Of course, after recommending that we get Music and Philosophy (which we don't need), plus cash and a world map (always indicative of lameness), Gandhi pops up again.

Wow, Uploads 12.

I can't refuse him, but I am not happy. So much for trading it away for Astro at cheap. Why does the AI refuse to cut you crappy deals, considering how much you cut them crappy deals? Argh, argh, argh.

So I built troops, shuffled 'em around, had the nasty feeling that I played a few too few turns, until I spotted this little Gem.

RBSGOTMArghArghArgh.JPG

Argharghargh. Not knights. That means we will need pikes, or a successful execution of the Sirian Doctrine. Can catapults bombard aboard ships? I didn't switch over to Engineering, though. We need the boats first, before we can even contemplate an invasion.

However, we do have a nicely sized stack, complete with oodles and oodles of catapults, too.

berserks, please use the GM to get some $, build some galleons, and get us in position to go and take Inca. Egyptian conquest!

Am I up already? Seems to go pretty fast now ... or that might just be me :)

Got it. Won't play til tomorrow though.

Turn 1 - Sent our merchant on his way to Delhi

Turn 2 - Novgorod finished cat, ordered another (I think we have enough cats, we should concentrate on more offensive units). Memphis finished mace, ordered another.

Turn 3 - FDR comes asking for Paper, turned him down. Thebes finished mace, ordered another.

Turn 4 - zzzz

Turn 5 - Our trade mission in Delhi net us 2250 Gold.

Turn 6 - Ghandi built a city at our "fur" location.

Turn 7 - Built some troops, ordered the same unit built.

Turn 8 - FDR wants rice for wine, sure why not.

Turn 9 - FDR wants Paper and 1680 for Engineering, that's way over it's value so I declined. Sal wants gems for fur, I agree. Finished researching Astronomy, started Engineering for pikes.

Turn 10- Built some troops, ordered same build order.

Our SOD is growing nicely, do we want to start building spears to upgrade or just wait til we have Eng and build some then? We'll need some of those Caravels to safe guard our navy transports. Nothing much happening except building stuff, so no pictures.

Here's the SAVE

All,

First of all I must apologize profusely for my sudden absence. I hope Beef told you all what was going on (I'll go back through the thread and look here in a minute) but in case he didn't I'll tell you again. I'm in the military and I got a 4-hour notice that I was to deploy to the middle east from my commander, and it was completely unexpected. I'm not really in a deployable position, so it was a real shock and not something that I expected. In my 4 hours of preparation time I completely forgot to post, and for that I am sorry. I am glad that Beef emailed me, as they will let me get to email but not many other websites.

In any case, except for another week-long trip starting on june 26th I should be around from now on, and I'm ready to play (although a bit rusty). I hope things have been going well.

Well, it's good to have you back. Beef did indeed tell us that you were unable to continue to participate for a while. So, if you feel like jumping back in, please, go right ahead.

Can someone write a big-picture summary of where we are at so I know what's up? I'd like to have an idea of our goals and current situation just so I don't misinterpret my impressions of the savegame.

Yeah Snap grab this save I still don't really have the time as I take possesion of my house tommorow.

As for our Goal, To win :)

The Executive Summary: The Quest for the Golden Laurels is upon us, and coming fast. Team One already beat the game, so their win date is what we have to get past. I'd like for us to finish competitively. Thusly, we are constructing a massive stack, with which to take Inca (we might want to do a bit of razing, and then fill in the blanks with our own settlers). To that end, we are now on the road, researching toward Engineering, to counter Huyana's knights.

We need more pikes, maces, and bows to take him; I think we have enough cats. We are trying to get rifling, and then going to attempt to pull a maneuver a la Sullla in Epic 3, at least concerning FDR and Saladin. But we have to move fast; the Golden Laurels ain't looking likely, but we should be able to post a competitive score.

Inherited turn. Let's see if I still remember how to play CIV after all these weeks.

Wow, it has been a long time since I've played this game. We have a stack that is sufficient to wipe Hayuna off the map no problem, maybe with a pike thrown in as previosuly suggested. So...

Pre-turn - Hayuna and Saladin don't have Astronomy yet, but Ghandi and Roosevelt do. Obviously I can't trade with Hayuna, but Saladin is willing to give both Engineering and Guilds for it, a nearly even trade. I take it in a heartbeat. Pikemen immediately dialed up in Memphis and Thebes. Has the AI discovered Liberalism yet??? I can't find it in the turn reports. Ghandi has philosophy and I suspect Liberalism also, but I want to take a look, so I dial up philosophy in 4 turns. If it turns out that the AI does have it already, then I'll go for gunpowder next, since it seems we have wuite a bit of research invested in it already, and I don't want it to decay. I notice that we have health problems in several of our cities, so I trade clams for corn to Roosevelt, solving them. Checking the cities, most look ok. Elephantine had a citizen specialist assigned, when artists and merchants were available. Weed. I fire him. I upgrade one of our galleys to a galleon and will follow suit with the rest next turn. Whew.

Turn 1 - I finish upgrading our galleons. The hammer is going to fall soon. Nothing else really happens this turn, but next turn the ships are heading out.

Turn 2 - The Galleons are loaded, heading out next turn. They are loaded primarily with maces and cats, but with a crossbowman, longbowman, and pikeman thrown in. I plan to land them on a hill and hopefully weather the initial counterattack while the galleons head back for reinforcements. We sure have a lot of units on goto orders and automation... I really don't like that in SG's, although I see where it was explained.

Turn 3 - Off we go!

01_firstwave.JPG

Turn 4 - Philosophy comes in and yep, Ghandi already has Liberalism. Argh! I trade it to Roosevelt for Banking. Economics has already been taken as well, so I start research on gunpowder. We almost have it finished anyway and no one else has it yet, so there may be some good trade opportunities there. Alexandria finished galley (which I upgrade) and starts lighthouse (which it desperately needs). Thebes is almost done with our third pikeman, after which it will start producing knights of its own.

Turn 5 - I start a Bank in Thebes instead of a knight - we have MORE than enough units and we need to get our economy in shape. Our fleet lands!

02_landing.JPG

And the 5 Galleons go back to pick up another entire fleet worth of units.

Turn 6 - Gunpowder comes in, start research on Chemistry. Lets get grenadiers out before anyone else and really clean house. There isn't a counterattack against our stack at all, so I move it into position to begin bombarding Tiwanku. A great scientist is born in Alexandria, and I have him build an Academy right there.

Turn 7 - Still no counterattack even though we are on flatland!! Ummm, ok... Goodbye city walls!

03_bombard.JPG

The rest of our fleet is back in harbor, picking up another stack. I'm going to use this stack as an entirely separate unit, we have enough units to easily make 2 SoD and that will make our conquest that much quicker.

Turn 8 - Our second invasion fleet is on the way

04_secondwave.JPG

The same year sees the first Incan city fall

05_tiwanku.JPG

Turn 9 - There is no counterattack on Tiwanku. The stack is ready to move out for the next target already. I land the other SoD near Vilcas for a brief stop

06_landing2.JPG

Turn 10 - Bombard the walls of Vilcas down to zero, then I capture it. And that's it. There are a couple of longbowmen out in the open that should be killed before they get back to a town, but I'll leave it to the next player to decide. The fleet is headed back to pick up more troops. Watch the finances - I suggest building banks!
